The cool thing about Extrude Tools is that it allows you to extrude lines, rather than faces, giving you a whole series of new modeling options.
What I wanted to do in this video was just run through the different tools and explain how each of them works.
Extrude Edges by Rails -
This allows you to take an edge and use other edges, or rails, to extrude it. You can use a 4th profile (a “Melding Profile”) to direct the final direction of the extrusion
Options will include reverse faces, reverse rails, quad faces, and delete original edges.
Extrude Edges by Rails to Lattice -
This works in a similar fashion to Extrude Edges by Rails, but then allows you to create a lattice from the resulting faces
Extrude Edges by Rails is very similar to the face creation by curviloft - you can select a series of lines, then generate a face with them. You can adjust the number of segments, and if the faces that are generated are quads or not.
Extrude edges by edges will take 2 groups of grouped edges and use them to generate a face by extruding 1 along the other.
Extrude edges by vector allows you to take an edge and extrude it in any direction you want.
Extrude edges by vector to object allows you to extrude multiple items and intersect them with a face.
Extrude edges by Lathe will allow you to rotate an edge in a circle, much like extruding a face around a circular shape with the follow me tool .
Extrude edges by face will take a flat face that you’ve drawn and extrude it along any edge you select. Theoretically works on multiple paths at once.
Extrude edges by faces will merge two faces along a rail, similar to curviloft’s loft along path function
Extrude edges by rails by face will extrude a flat face along a series of rails created by curves - confused yet?
Extrude by offset - create face from a line based on a defined thickness

Thanks a lot. This is great guidance. You are my new Sketchup mentor. I have just bought the Shop version and am going to upgrade to the Pro. My need is to draw several greenhouse shapes for my organic farm. I will bend pipes to create beautiful shapes which are not just half circles but elongated arcs,
thank you for this! I am an amateur concept artist, and this is a best way to redesign the way I work with structures on my concepts. Thank you once again and have a great day!
Awesome! Glad you found it helpful!
It is very important video for architect students like me. And I wanna say thank you so much for those video. Finally, I hope that you make more video of those.
Thanks Justin, I've been following your channel for past few weeks, you are making really good contents!!!
Thanks very much!
Hi Justin, Great extension for our future city models , Perfect for that bridge image.
Thanks Wayne - glad you liked it!
Thank you for this video. These extrude tools are awesome! :)
Similar to rhino command, and i found this very helpful for sketchup. Thanks
amazing video thank You :) your work with sketchup community is astonishing throug all this years ...congrats mate! :)
I just realized this extension is the solution to drawing knee wall intensive story and a half in 3d: extrude by vector to object. Create the walls in 2d, make the roof in Tig's Roof, or Instant Roof (with inner faces) then extrude the walls to the roof underside deck. Super handy. Can't wait to explore the rest of what this extension can do. Thanks for highlighting it.
👍
Great video it really helps lot for those making complex structures thank you for your video
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. This is awesome.
Great video, as always! As far as the Extrude Edges By Face function goes, I couldn't get it to work with any kind of a straight rail. It seems to work fine with arcs.
Stephan Holland if u an architect u should try revit😊
very helpful as always!! thanks !!
Great Job! Easy to follow and I learned a great deal.
Thanks Pete! Glad you found it helpful!
I'm in love with your videos
Starting to update me and help a lot with this tutorial...more thanks
Awesome extension
thank you for this very useful...
very good tutorial.. thanks.. 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you!
THANKS A LOT FOR YOU TUTORIALS
Your tutorials are great!
Thank you!!!
very great job i love it! I just want to ask could you please record a video about the Milan Fair type of structure how it models??
well .. it's great for me as a student ! it makes life easier ))). thanks alot !
Glad you liked it!
AMAZING !!!!
He Justin! I wish you all the best for 2018 and keep up the good work!
I was just experimenting with this extension! Thank you for doing my homework! :-)
Hi Willem! I was so excited to see this extension get updated for 2018! It didn't really work in 2017, so now I'm enjoying all the things you can do with it!
thank you so much for this video.
Thanks for watching!
I no its an old video, but I love the way this guy explains things
Glad you liked it!
Thanks Justin!
Thanks for watching!
thx bro jstn this was so smoooth. it helped me a lot
Thanks - glad you liked it!
fantastic
Hey Justin, I really enjoy your videos. They help me a lot with architectural modeling. One problem I'm having is making a curved surface from two curves but the other two sides of the profile are straight. The extrude tool asks for curves and not lines. Any suggestion to this problem? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
... sehr sehr gut! 👍
and this toolset is worth at least this detailed kind of presentation! - not least because it is a tool for special tasks and not for the every day stuff.
I want to say: I have to click your so good video again and again 😏
thanks a lot bro😍❤
very good tutorial!!!
Thanks!
Thanks.
This is so amazing ..
:)
Thank for tutorial
Thanks for watching!
hi i am murugesan ,
your video all vrey useful , i am using 2016 sketchup ,
thankyou,
Great video, bro. Do you have a video on how to draw the curved lines you used in this video setup? Would like to learn the tricks and shortcuts to draw those
I think I just used the arc tool...
Wow... Powerful tools
That why I think sketchup is the best
Glad you enjoyed it!
TheSketchUpEssentials always enjoy ur videos 👍
Hi there... You are amazing in every tutorial.. I've one doubt.. Is that plugin will run in 2015 sketchup version...?
you are amazing! but i have a question....what abaout if i have a wings of an eagle form, haw can i create an organic canopy?? thanks
I love your video and this plugin will help a great lot. The latest version says "v5.0 v2019 compatible - Note: ExtrudeEdgesbyFace tool removed - it is unstable in this and other recent versions.". Is there a way to find v4.0 or the single plugin "ExtrudeEdgesbyFace tool"?
I NEED THIS EXTENSION
It's linked in the notes below the video
great!
Thanks for watching!
hanks much Justin, Two thing about the first tool; extrude by rails (and probably others as well) however its critical to have solid lines as rails or profiles. Weld does not always work the first time but it appears to really be critical to have connected lines. Second there is a limit on how much of a incline the second melding profile can be relative to the first profile at least as viewed from the top (assuming the rails and profiles are based on the z plane. I could not get beyond about a 40 degrees incline before the extrusion imploded on itself. Am no expert so please, advise
No clue - I haven't played around with the melding profiles to that level of detail. I believe there's a thread over on SketchUcation that TIG posts in, so he might know more about this than I do...
gooood video bro
Thanks!
hi JUSTIN, ur video is amazing it sort of solved my problem but wanna ask if we can change grid inputs in impose grids?
I don't understand - do you impose a grid in extrude tools?
Hey, Thank you for the awesome tutorial.
Have one question though, would it run well on a 64 bit system with just 4GB of RAM?
It really depends more on how complex the shapes you're creating are. If you use smart modeling techniques and keep your models low poly, it would probably be ok. A lot of the speed issues in SketchUp come more from modeling practices and the ability of the engine to display large numbers of polygons
@@Thesketchupessentials okay got it. Thanks a lot! :)
TIG Extrude Tools is only for Sketchup 2018 or earlier, according to the TIG details on Sketchucation pages
Working just fine in my SketchUp 2022
can any one tell me why the function extrude by rails doesnt work if second profile is a straight line? I jsut don't get it :/
Really good tutorial. I have a silly question but I will be glad to have an answer. When I select a curved line it is separated on a few pieces. When I try to convert it in polyline it doesn't work. How can I reach this one?
How are you trying to "convert" it?
thank:s alot fpr your informations i like your channel so much please tell me their's no more 2015 modeles in the werhouse ??? i found only 2017 .. 2018 .. 2019
Apparently not - that is an older version of SketchUp, so you're likely going to run into some issues like this.
i have installed but i cant see in my menu, could you help me, please?? sketchup 2020
Thanks
Hi, for me "Extrude Edges by Face" also doesn't work with multiple curves (SU 2017). Looks like we need to wait for a fix.
There was an issue with this extension and 2017 - I thought that it had been fixed in the newest release (even for 2017), but I could be wrong. It works well in 2018. Thanks!
Hi justin!! nice tutorial...watching from costa rica...where can i find the PLUG IN??
Is it not linked in the notes below the video?
Nice plugins, i need how to make 3d humman on sketchup please i will watch this video
Hmmm...haven't done that one yet - I know it's possible, but I'm not sure if SketchUp is the best tool for human modeling - thanks!
Okay thank you for tutorial
I can't download the joint push pull plugin in windows extension? Why's that? Can someone help me? Thanks in advance
Is this extension available for the 2020 version? I looked for it on the extension warehouse but it didn’t come up!
hi there my name is Alex, i study architecture in El Salvador, i need to know what tools you use to create renders in sketchup and if you can make a video to explain how to use those tools, it would be awesome..... nice to meet you by the way
Hi Alex - nice to hear from you. I use several different rendering programs - you might want to start with this video - ruclips.net/video/J7u6fEmJWpo/видео.html - I have tutorials for Twilight, Enscape, and Vray on this channel right now, with Lumion coming soon. Thanks!
Great tutorial!
I tried out Extrude Edges by Rail on SketchUp 2017. all I got were the guide points but not the geometry. any advice?
I always got weird results with this extension in SketchUp 2017 - it seems to be fixed in 2018
that's too bad for me then...
i dont have any idea on how or where to put that tool after i downloaded it in link
Hi, the extruce Edges by rails to lattice have no option: Erase Coplanar Edges? as shown in your video. I´m using the latest SketchUp Pro 2018 with this Extension ... Thank you
No idea - that pops up when I run it - not sure why it would or wouldn't pop up on yours...
I know it's an old comment but i found a solution . you need to change the number of the segments on your curves to solve it . when i added more segments . its seem to work fine .
双截面放样问题在哪呢?
Hi
I m not getting mesh I m just getting black dots
250 likes 0 dislikes, TUTORIAL EXCELLENCY
LOL :)
I've downloaded and installed it, but I can't show Extrusion Tools Window on my SketchUp. How can I show the Extrusion window on my SketchUp?
Did you make sure it's enabled in your extension manager?
lock then in a group the lines you want sweeped.
I don't understand what this means...
@@Thesketchupessentials You asked if any one can tell you how to get all those lines swept with that i pattern .
I cant download the extrude extension :(
i have download it but it's not the same like he used
how do I create that pattern in that form 6:29 , i have created before and now gives completely different form like flat surface when i extrude
I'm not really sure how to explain it differently - its basically that shape that I'm showing, and then you pick the options that I pick in the video...Did you make sure that you didn't accidentally draw one or two of the edges on the wrong axis?
thanks for the video. does anyone tried to download it ? it is always failing. let me know please
Downloads fine here
When i extrude edge by rail it showed me dot like start not like what i saw in the tutorial solid with lines
Are you in SketchUp 2017? SketchUp 2017 didn't really work well with Extrude Tools...
I need help, I do not make faces with the first and second plugins...thanks you!
Have you installed the latest version? This was an error I had in 2017, but I thought it got updated and fixed - not sure for 2017 though
I used version 2017, But I still do not succeed.. :(
Curviloft I'd not working in my sketchup it says need licence and I don't know how to solve this problem
It now requires a paid license
How can apply to a curve line with straight line combination.
I don't understand the question.
seems really cool, but for some reason after I installed it I do not get a tab with all the functions :? does anyone have an idea how to fix it???
You mean the toolbar? If it's installed and enabled in the extension manager, then you may need to right click in the toolbars section and make sure the toolbar is turned on
it wasn't turned on on the toolbar, many thanks :)
Not sure whats going on. My extrusion using edges by rail is not following the rails. Instead it goes off about 45 degrees from where it should on both rails.
No clue - is your rail geometry split somewhere?
this do freeze up my sketchup a lot
Hello, SU 2019 Pro user here, I cant find the Extrude from edges by face button in my Extrusion tools(timeline 14:30), do you know why?
Same here on 2018 and the Extrude Rail by Face seems to (not work) like the Extrude Rail by Face to Object. It is asking for a melding profile. The result is the same as show here not following the path. My version of the extension is v5.0
cna i ask how to activate the extrude tool into sketchup?
You should probably start with this video - ruclips.net/video/r1EcMNiW7t0/видео.html - Thanks
I have 2019 SU and I've just installed this plugin. And there is even no button you've used in 14:40... So do you have any ideas about another method how to get follow me to multiply curves?
I don't understand - you installed extrude tools and one of the tools isn't in the list? Are you sure? Did you try reinstalling?
@@Thesketchupessentials yes, that is true. check the screenshot - you have 11 tools and I have just 10. there is no 'Extrude Faces by edges' - just exactly what I needed 😯
photos.app.goo.gl/a93QgYaMHum4SiCw7
11:25 so SU can detect collisions! Why don't they add this as a standard function to assist with engineering projects?
I mean...sort of I guess? I'm not sure how much of this is contained in SketchUp and how much is in the Extrude Tools script...
How can i explod a line as segments? As u did in 9:19
Right click - explode curve
Hay I've just been in the extention warehouse and the extensions tools plug in is not there?
Hello. I had the same problem earlier. You may want to check your toolbar and make sure that the "Extrude tools" is checked.
I found it thru the link on the video. It's in a different warehouse
@@nicholasfurby2238 you mean in SketchUcation? This link: sketchucation.com/pluginstore?pln=ExtrudeTools ?
I love it, but cant find it in the warehouse, not sure why
Are you looking in the SketchUcation warehouse? I don't believe it's in the built-in SketchUp warehouse...
I found it there, thanks but cant make it work, dont know how to 'plug' it in to the Sketchup. I tried to copy the file into plugins folder, but its manu doesnt appear when I open sketchup
window > extension manager > install extension
Still have no idea how to extrude edges by face on a mesh without doing it line by line
Wouldn't that be Extrude Edges by Rails by Face? 16:31 in?
I can't seem to get edges by rails to make faces. Just leaves me a nice pointcloud
Nevermind it was version 3. Thanks
👍
как же плохо что я не зная английский язык(
Cool! BTW, don't you blink? haha
Extrusion is killing me. I select all the right things but Sketchup just generates a shape using the first shape and the first rail... completely ignores the melding and rail no 2???
Sorry, not sure what's causing this. The simplest question I would ask is are you sure you have the right tool selected?
I found what you've boon doing wrong with the extrude edges by faces and I can quickly explain it. Just answer me to the comment to see if you're really checking the comments and I will tell you :)
Sigh....yes, I check the comments
@@Thesketchupessentials sorry then, some do not. You've got the circle and the rectangle facing opposite directions. They have to face the same. So instead of seeing one of them white and the other one grey, you need to see them both in the same direction (either both white or both grey). For me it worked, good luck and let me now :)
justin got pink eye or he high af??
Nope - just up super early making videos for people so they can make fun of what I look like
@@Thesketchupessentials haha, thanks man, i appreciate it!
The extension no longer has 'Extrude Edges by Face'.
