Restoration work is underway on what is reportedly the largest-ever bronze mask to be unearthed in China’s Sanxingdui ruins. The relic is believed to be thousands of years old, dating from the Shu Kingdom period. Located in Sichuan province, the archeological site was first discovered in the late 1920s. New relics have been found at the ruins’ No.3 and No.8 ritual pits, which the research team began excavating in October 2020.

It's a relief that the pits were only discovered now. If they were discovered decades back, they would have been looted clean and on display on some Western museums around the world.

It's interesting that a lot of ancient artifacts share some similarities, even though they are thousands miles apart, this is so fascinating.

Why is the artwork so similar to those found in central and south America around the same period? Do you think its because both civilization had access to similar levels of tools and hence they developed similar styles?

That's why Carl Jung said in his theory of personality that we human inherit the memories of our ancestors because we seems to share a lot of similar thoughts and cultures even though those cultures had never really had many interactions, at least from what he saw during his trip from Africa, India, China to far east. Quite eerie.

Well that's like saying American culture is old. "Chinese" culture today is vastly different than even 80 years ago, when people there spoke a different language and were still allowed to practice religions. Thousands of years ago, "China" was not unified and culture varied greatly throughout different regions of that area. It's more like you might think about tribes native to the Americas, each with their own histories and cultures. In fact, this particular dig is re-writing modern understandings of the history in that region of China.

By the way, I can tell you that although people from different areas have really different cultures and traditions in China, we still recognize ourselves as Chinese, thank you
@@kch3244 That's great your Grandmother still practices her old dialect, but I was referring to her dialect and hundreds of others no longer being taught, and the simplification of Mandarin into Modern Standard Chinese. China is a modern state and most people recognize their country's more diverse pre-history before becoming a nation-state. Not that modern China is unified as a population even today-- if you're not Han you're not considered Chinese despite being born and raised in modern China.

@Solo Leung Metal gets corroded. Patina protects it to some extent, but then there's also many orher factors like its material value which must have been massive.

Yes I believe so, The Eagle the Jaguar and the Serpent is an excellent book showing how similar art motifs from China, India and from the Austronesians show up in the new world, the Polynesians made it to Easter Island but not Americas seems ridiculous, them and the Chinese had boat that could make it across the Pacific, also the Phoenicians, we are all connected.

ALL faces look similar to a certain degree. The more plausible reason could be that ancient casting techniques were crude and therefore castingforms needed to be simple. Because the used forms were simple they were more likely to look similar to other civilizations.
@@ozvulcan I never said Meso-Ameican was linked to Sanxingdui, however Shu probably influenced Shang and Chou art styles and that style along with many Indian beliefs are apparent in Meso-America, try checking out the book before you dismiss it as "pseudo" history the guy puts together some compelling evidence. I've been to Shanghai museum and Museo Nacional de Antropología before I read the book and saw a connection.

I went to the museum that had these because I heard theories that these were made by aliens. I got there and all the descriptions only had sensible and logical explanations of their origins. 3/10 No aliens would not recommend
