After seeing this video, I changed my LinkedIn headline to Full-Stack Instructional designer and developer. Because, I am working in a centralized team as a generalist. I handle of the roles from analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.
Fantastic content and delivery, Tim! My current title is Instructional Designer and, after watching your video, I would say that I work on a centralized L&D team. My classification of generalist or specialist typically depends on the projects I've been provided based on the business needs at that time. However, I've greatly enjoyed the projects where I've been trusted to act as a generalist taking a project through all 5 steps of the ADDIE model like you've mentioned here. Thank you so much for helping me learn the apporpriate terms to describe my experience!

And yes, understanding this type of information will certainly help you find a common language with future hiring managers / clients about your skills...BUT...it'll also help you ask pointed questions to understand the way they're structured and the way that they operate.
Loved seeing this as a newer e-learning professional. I think I understand better how our org is set up. I work for a medium to large healthcare company and we are definitely set up in the decentralized model. The only exception is that our HR IDs keep watch over and maintain the LMS. We have ID teams in medical records, revenue cycle, and )of course) HR. I work on a clinical (nurse) education team, and all of the IDs I know in the company are generalists. Although, my background is in video production, so I usually get the call from other IDs when there's a heavy lift needed for that. So maybe there are some specialist needs there too.😂
Thanks for sharing, Mark! And from the sounds of it, I would for sure say that you’re a specialist from a video perspective…and some L&D team focus exclusively on video stuff. So, keep that in mind as you move forward in your career.
I've been a centralized team of 1 (definitely a generalist!), on a centralized team/specialist role, and now... I'm sometimes a generalist and sometimes a specialist serving both centralized and decentralized teams. 😀 The upside is seeing the org and building relationships in different ways plus needing to develop skills in response. Thanks for this message--it's so important for career changers into L&D to consider how the department/service area is structured.
Great video! This really helped put into terms what I’ve been desiring in an L&D role. I’ve always felt like a Jack of all trades and master of none but have longed to be an expert in one element. This video helped me realize I’d prefer to be a specialist on a decentralized team.

I've been thinking about this for awhile now and your video has really helped me see where our team fits. I am a generalist on a decentralized team but about six months ago a team was formed to discuss moving in the direction of a centralized team of specialists.
Thanks for sharing, Matt! When / if you team does make the switch from decentralized to centralized...prepare for that to be a very long transition. I once worked on a team that did this and not everyone survived it. It's a big change to make and it requires a collective effort to make it successful!
Another great video about the "real" world of L&D. I feel like it helped that I had worked in a "professional" job before I went into teaching. Then, when I pivoted out of teaching into Instructional Design, I already had a little bit of corporate "speak" in my toolkit. My current team has been discussing how to really define the different roles in our department. I'm currently debating whether to go for a Senior ID role later this year or not based on the clarification of the role within our team. You got me thinking about how I could help clarify that!
