Shane lived more in his 39 years than people who live to be 100. This was his work and passion. Those that have to bad mouth him, not everyone lives as you do. Everyone has path in life and just because someone does something in life different than you does not make it a bad choice. His motive was not to harm anyone, but to seek adventure and make a living doing so. My hat off to you Shane.
Shane ,I know you probably read these still. I don't know if you remember me , but I stayed under your garage with Ike one winter and you were a cool cat landlord. You were always nice and something unbelievable. There's people that miss you around here u know. Anyhow want to let you know that your spirit still lives on around these parts. You're a Legend brah.
I'd never actually heard of Shane until I was at home about a month ago and happened to watch "McConkey" with my mom. Never in my life will I be able to do what he did -- as in, jumping off ten-foot diving boards makes me scream in genuine terror -- so I admire the hell out of him for it. What a life he lived. I hope that I can get the same satisfaction out of my own far less extreme life somehow.
Wow. I found this whilst browsing through youtube, looking for a ski video to buy for my dad. Now I kept my eyes dry through Marley and Me, but after watching this (not having known who shane was before I clicked play) I'm welling up like crazy. What a guy.
I got asked about a core memory in skiing while applying for a ski industry job this week. Something that sparked a passion at an early age. Shane, CR Johnson( RIP to that legend) and Daron Rahlves came to my elementary school as a kid. CR was still young and somewhat under the radar, Daron was full racing carear but and Shane, well Shane was a bonafide legend at the time. All I had for him to sign was a scrap of a brown paper lunch bag, to which he laughed and signed in red sharpie. As a 8 year old ski kid I was over the moon. I had that brown scrap of lunch paper next to my bed forever. Ultimately, pros are just people. But Shane was a gem. I got to see the premier of In Deep in Vail, CO. Sold out crowd and everybody went NUTS when Shane rules came across the screen. He pulled emotion out of so many of us. I was fortunate enough to ski a lap with Daron one time and asked him about the event. Even he remembered how crazy us elementary school kids were about Shane. 15 years later and still often in our thoughts Shane!! Thanks for still making us smile and keeping skiing fun.
This dude was probably one of the best skiers I have ever seen in camera, I myself love to ski and would one day love to do what he has done, but I doubt I will ever be able to be that good, he should be remembered for a very long time!
It all brings a bigger question to mind. What is my ultimate end goal in life? Where do i head in my life - my career. Shane sought happiness and freedom and found it. He was exceptionally good at what he did, and money never became an object to hold him back or deter him from what he needed from life. Shane is my fucking role model. Sometimes I have to stop and really think about if getting this MBA i'm working for is what i truly want from life. Do i really need to make enough money to impress others, or should I risk taking a low income job for a high income of happiness. Maybe one day i'll look back and wish i'd gone the other way. What a devastating loss, he was. Shane '72-'09
I have this as the first video saved in my bookmarks, I always come back and watch it every now and then. Seems like an outstanding guy that I missed the opportunity to meet.
I have only been skiing a few times, but he is more than just a skier, he is an ambassador of life, and his greatness influenced every person he met. Shane dreamed as if he was going to live forever, but lived as if he was going to die today.
I was reminded of this when I heard about Lemmy the other day. To legends, living to the fullest in disregard of others opinions, up to the moment they died. RIP to both, true role models to look up to.
I take my hat of for these guys... Most people go thru there dull existence and never never ever feel alive... Or do what the love doing... Live on....
What a huge inspiration. Damn, I wish I could ski a billionth as well as him. I think my biggest ski jump is 10 feet!!! R.I.P. Shane, thanks for saving the ski industry.
until this day i have never had a hero or "people who inspire me". actually i didn't even know what that meant. now i know. and for the first time in my life i have someone who inspires me.
3 year anaversary of we know what, rip shane you will be missed, even by those people like me who never you, but were still effected alot by everything great you did. shred the gnar.
THANK YOU SHANE! how awesome is it that our generation is able to click their mouse a couple times and end up watching such incredible human beings! Shane is a true hero that not many people know about and i am thankful for being exposed to not only shane but others that are right there with him and those that choose to follow in his dream! THANK YOU SHANE McConkey for making me a better person! i can jump off 100 mountains but never compare to you! BIP! Base In Peace! :)
Will Wingsuit Fly before I die not because of a song 🎶 because Shane!!! Like Plake,Mead,The Fouders of North Face. Before becoming a Corp😢Entity.. hahaha😊
It would mess up the wind resistance with the wing suit; plus you don't want skis hanging down when they are gliding so close to the mountains sometimes. Can you imagine having a ski hit a rock at those speeds? It would cause you to tumble and subsequently die.
I do agree with John, but I think Shane must have thought he could still get the skis off and glide safely, otherwise surely he would have scrapped the wingsuit idea and just pull the chute early. The skis shouldn't have ruined that. Such a shame.
You are Immortal Shane, you are an inspiration to everyone, we all Love you. Shred the Gnar of the Heavens for us, I hear they get pretty good snow up there. Oh and I am totally a way better skier than you! (JOKING)
actually when the footage was reviewed the spin was induced by Shane making the decision to release the skis manually, in reaching down to do this he caused the spin and ended up on his back. Even so, he did release the ski he then managed to roll back over and regain a stable deployment position, however he was now 9/10 secs into free fall and there was no time to pitch his pilot chute. The problem with terminal ski base jumps with or without wing suit is that the skis at that speed going to cause you to flip/spin (as pointed out above), that is why on long delays him and JT choose to release them. When wingsuiting deploying with them on has it's own concerns too as they are flying forwards, it is almost certain the pilot shoot would wrap around the ski, and even the main chute could deploy into the ski if the pilot successfully avoided it. Could he have gone into another flip and deployed as he came out of it in a more standing position (instead of a belly position) with his ski on? possibly, but his choice was the right one, he simply didn't have the time.
I watched Dan Osman before and I see Shane had a daughter as well...I ask myself how you can risk your life that hard when you have a family? Just don't get that.

It is hard to believe that a skier this creative, authentic, funny and talented ever existed in this world... RIP, Shane...

What happens to the skis ?
Watching this as a college student wondering why I'm still in college...
Deep OowpiPow❤
Once Bro Hume starts up, so does the happy tears (:
Will Wingsuit Fly before I die not because of a song 🎶 because Shane!!! Like Plake,Mead,The Fouders of North Face. Before becoming a Corp😢Entity.. hahaha😊
Can u tell me whats the name of the song in the end?
fuck yes
why do you need to get your skis off after you jump over the edge? Couldn't you just glide down to safety with your skies still attached?
It would mess up the wind resistance with the wing suit; plus you don't want skis hanging down when they are gliding so close to the mountains sometimes. Can you imagine having a ski hit a rock at those speeds? It would cause you to tumble and subsequently die.
I do agree with John, but I think Shane must have thought he could still get the skis off and glide safely, otherwise surely he would have scrapped the wingsuit idea and just pull the chute early. The skis shouldn't have ruined that. Such a shame.
If you watch McConkey it explains he only lost one ski and it sent him into a spin that made it impossible to pull his chute
Clifton Kartner yeah you're right, I just wonder if he should have pulled anyway and hoped for the best.
what song is this
I almost cried at 4:25
You are Immortal Shane, you are an inspiration to everyone, we all Love you. Shred the Gnar of the Heavens for us, I hear they get pretty good snow up there. Oh and I am totally a way better skier than you! (JOKING)
i met his daughter she is really cool.
BEST FUCKING SKIER
what song is this?
Pennywise "Bro Hymm"
DO U GUYS STONEGRIND SNOWBLADES
I'm not trying to be mean but how did he not be able to get his skis off cause him to die. Didn't he still have a wing suit and a parachute.
because he couldn't get his skis off it caused him to spin so he couldn't deploy his parachute.
actually when the footage was reviewed the spin was induced by Shane making the decision to release the skis manually, in reaching down to do this he caused the spin and ended up on his back. Even so, he did release the ski he then managed to roll back over and regain a stable deployment position, however he was now 9/10 secs into free fall and there was no time to pitch his pilot chute.

My friends Son🥲
Шейн был определённо крутым чуваком
i never knew who he was until i looked up my own name 'Shane McConkey' and found him out
8:32 Sums up everything :D
I watched Dan Osman before and I see Shane had a daughter as well...I ask myself how you can risk your life that hard when you have a family? Just don't get that.
it's a lifestyle
I'd trade five of Shane's years for twenty of mine.
