It is a very capable 4-wheel-drive vehicle up to its certain limits. It can also tow 7,700 pounds. It handles great in the snow and deep sand. Hill climbs up to 45 degrees and lateral terrain up to 35 degrees. I own a Jeep wrangler as my rock crawler and the Touareg as my bunny trail, snow trail and family offroad vehicle. I also tow my Jeep and tow my boat with the Touareg. It also comes in really handy to sleep in the back at offroad camps when I tow my Jeep with it.
The bottom line is; it's a great SUV that can take you the extra mile off the beaten path (to its limits). It drives at 100mph with such comfort, it brakes unbelievably and when you drive on the rocky trails, the bumps don't drive you crazy like a Jeep or truck. It's comfortable and fun to take offroad.
This video has some good comments and a lot of negative comments on this vehicles 4-wheel-drive capabilities. On the negative commenters, you're missing the concept. This SUV is not a rock crawler or an extreme terrain 4x4 vehicle. It's a luxury mid-size SUV that handles exceptionally well on the roads and can also handle off-camber terrain off the roads. It has a 2.73:1 gear ratio low range transfer case with front and rear electronically controlled limited slip differentials.
Actually, that is EXACTLy what it was designed for. EXACTLY. Luxury SUV of the year and Offroad WSUV of the year simultaneously in 2004, set the Guisness book of world records for highest offroad elevation without oxygen as well. it was designed with Africa in mind.
@chinchillawrangler You are absolutely right and I cannot spot any of my postings stating otherwise. At the end of the story, the power on the wheel proofs how powerful and efficient the whole engine and drivetrain really is.
@Mrwickid1979 See ... with a diesel I need to take care which gear to chose just to keep the turbo spinning. Thats why I have a V8. It has torque from the very beginning, a performance curve without dents. And forget the fuel prices, it runs on LPG, therefore cheaper than diesel.
@Mrwickid1979 Of course I was in low range when I drove in this video brother. The diesel engine itself has more torque, yes but who cares. The torque on the wheel is more interesting and that is higher with the V8. From the start, and not when the turbors finally bother to pump up after a second or so.
@desireless4ever Actually, the V8 has 410nm of torque which doesn't come in until 3000rpm, even if we forget the V10 diesel, the V6 diesel has either 500nm or 550nm of torque from 1500rpm depending on the year. I work for Volkswagen. Stop arguing with me ok. It's fairly evident only one of us knows what we are talking about.
the car from my father is a FORD MONDEO from the year 2002 and it have a weight of 1.9 tons and it have consumpcion 5 liters in the highway and 6/6.5 in city :) , and it,s a Diesel and he has too a wonderful sound , the engine is loud in sound and for a car with 1.9 tons and 115 HP + turbo have this car a very good acceleration , from 0-100km/h / 0-60 mph in 9.5 sec. and max. 204km/h / 125 mph
@Mrwickid1979 You name it. Take your calculator and multiply the torque with the the engine speed and see what is left on the wheel. The diesel HAS to have a higher torque because of its low rpm.
@SneakyTweaky Diesel gives you more Torque, Power is around the same as gas, may be a few HP less, but Diesel has way more torque than Gasoline. You have to get a huge displacement in a gas engine to get the same torque you get from a diesel engine. So, everything depends on what engine and car you have, I have been in off road situations using Diesel and Gas, both are good, as long as you know the engine limits. Anyway, No wonder why tractors and heavy equipment is diesel and not gas.
I prefer the Gasoline, Diesel always sounds like a tractor and it takes half a second till the real traction comes along. This is a V8, it runs on LPG, is faster, smoother, sexier than any diesel and even the LPG gas is cheaper.
yes, Power means "how fast you lift / pull / push / press something" but Torque are like "the muscles of the car" (you need also some Power, of course, but the way the engine is built offers it) that's why Dacia Duster, probably the cheapest off-road car in the world, Handles Soooo Well FOR HER PRICE ! ! ! :D (1.5 DCI + 110 HP as much HP as 1.9 TDI Skoda Octavia) I am Romanian, I don't laugh of Dacia Duster :)) but it is 'honorable' for a car to be good enough, but cheaper than it deserves :D
Have you heard about TSI engine? The turbine switches in about 1700-1800RPM, and you can rev the engine to about 6000RPM. I also dont have an idea what did you mean saying that "petrol dies by a brutal acceleration".
Petrol is more volatile than Diesel Fuel, and automatically Petrol Engines consumes more than Diesel Engines . . . but definely it depends also how old or how good the engine is
@ADY285 If your engine dies, your car is junk or the driver. My friends V10 diesel eats 13 liter/100 km and my V8 15-16. He pays double as much for tax and more for insurance and inspections. Two other guys that I know burnt up of the V10 twin turbos. Cost € 15.000 to fix.
@SneakyTweaky by careful of your use of words, petrol/gasoline engines have a lot more power than diesels, as the can achieve higher rpm. What I think you mean is that diesel engines have better torque, this allows for the smoother driver at slow speeds up and down hills ;)
@96integra02 lol, having more horse power and less torque has nothing to do with revving faster. Diesel is burnt more completely than petrol, and it's can't do so at too high revs. It needs more time to burn, and therefore the revs are limited...
@SneakyTweaky LOL. Funny guy. Funny. Trying to use my age to avoid the question. Actually I do own a car. A 1997 Jetta GLS. Now that we have that covered, do you actually even know how a diesel engine works?
I´d hardly categorize the old Gelendewagen, as a sport utility vehicle. it´s more like a tractor. The defender and the Gelendewagen are in the same league. both extremely capable offroad tractors. But fact is, that VW touareg, porsche cayenne, Audi Q7, BMW X5, Cadilac Escalade etc. are all sofroad vehicles. As i said, if you are planning on crossing the jungels of africa in a SUV. Range rover is the ONLY choice. But it would be even better in a tractor like the Defender :)
@samsemtex was more of a point of interest, stating accomplishments. Touareg are not cheap so dont expect cheap parts. If people cant afford the gas or parts for them, maybe they should drive a jeep or some other cheap 4x4. To some people that is not expsensive, to others it is. Its all perspective. Do you think parts on the VW Blue or Audi TT or ferrai or bogadi are cheap? Forget price already, if you find it pricey, this is not a vehicle for you. And no one goes to the dealer for parts
VW touareg, porsche cayenne are proper off-roader. audi Q7 and BMW X5 are for light off-road, the quattro in the Q7 isn't designed to do proper off-roading, however it works; the Xdrive from BMW is only good for additional traction when it gets a little rougher on the the road. cadilac escalade? let's not talk about that POC okay. i agree with you on range rover, but the range rover nowadays are not very reliable, i don't want a breakdown in the jungle. defender are perfect for africa.
@desireless4ever what type of engine you have is irrelevant to how much power youre gonna get at the wheels. say a diesel has 250 ft/lbs of torque at the crank and a gas engine has 250 ft/lbs of torque at the crank and you put them in the same car, the gasser wont make more for whatever reason you think so. it all has to do with how efficient the manufacturer designed it the drivetrain
@desireless4ever If you need that much traction then you should be in low range, and the last thing you want is a shit load of revs. The diesel has a lower torque curve and is far easier to control at low revs.
а мы по таким дорогам в россии каждый день ездим и без offroad на лысой резине...а наши дороги при этом самые дорогие...we are ride the car every day on this road in russia...
that's obvious. a big engine consums more gasoline, because most of the time a big engine provides also more horsepower. But if u compare engines in "normal" cars. diesel is most of the time cheaper and "easier" to drive. Its really hard to stall a diesel car with lets say 60hp. but u can easy stall a 60hp petrol car. If u start on a hill then it can happen that u stall a petrol.
you wouldn't drive to the other side of africa with a car like this anyway, its a good driver, work a bit more on those skills and you will become a real offroader ;)
@samsemtex Thats his fault for having low profiles on it or not knowinghow to use the lift control. I have 150k on mine and I have only the heater blower motor, 100euros and a delivery fee. Nothing else has been an issue, aside from brakes, belts, oil a& filter etc. (wear items). Maybe your brother doesnt know how to drive off road. I do, The army taught me I beat all other SUVs in Offroad & Luxy in the same model. as well. Also SUV of the year and Guiness book recod holder,

They do the job, trust me, one of the best SUV's out there !
The bottom line is; it's a great SUV that can take you the extra mile off the beaten path (to its limits). No one:
RUclips's algorithm: showing me Volkswagen touareg video before 13 years with 808k views for no reason.

Very nice Touareg nice off road track
@VolkswagOwned that's why gearboxes exist, petrols have different ratios so that the wheel torque is the same.
Very nice car!.
wow, quite some crazy angles there. Was it ever in danger of falling over? It certainly looked like it!
Gasoline is the way to go, nice to once again that some people still likes gasoline engines rather then diesel.
Cool video 5/5
Very Good.
@chinchillawrangler You are absolutely right and I cannot spot any of my postings stating otherwise. At the end of the story, the power on the wheel proofs how powerful and efficient the whole engine and drivetrain really is.
wow! i'm very impressed...nice car
Beautiful wheels :) I have the same with summer tyres :) but they are very bad on mud...
@desireless4ever If you are in the right gear at the right time the turbo would already be spinning. Try using the DSG the way VW intended.
wow man! nicejob! well done
that was impressive i want one...
@Mrwickid1979 See ... with a diesel I need to take care which gear to chose just to keep the turbo spinning. Thats why I have a V8. It has torque from the very beginning, a performance curve without dents. And forget the fuel prices, it runs on LPG, therefore cheaper than diesel.

ist ein geiles auto.. fahre den gleichen nur als 2,5.. will mir jetzt den 3,0 holen.. einfach nur brutal. lässt alle jeeps blass aussehen
I want to see other SUVs go over this exact same course.
Whats the best engine for offroading in the Tourareg... The Gasoline or the Diesel???
Good job , indeed !!!
nice trick !!!
@Mrwickid1979 You name it. Take your calculator and multiply the torque with the the engine speed and see what is left on the wheel. The diesel HAS to have a higher torque because of its low rpm.

Still waiting to see some off-road action.
What I see here I can do with my Corolla....
I know that the paths in your one-horse-town are not better than this. in our civilization this is an offroad track.
Have you heard about TSI engine? The turbine switches in about
1700-1800RPM, and you can rev the engine to about 6000RPM. I also dont have an idea what did you mean saying that "petrol dies by a brutal acceleration".
So was this a shortcut to soccer practice?
nice driving ;)
Hast ja recht, aber das war ja auch nur der Anfang vom Offroad-Gelände. Danach wurde es richtig heftig
@Mrwickid1979 550nm on the crankshaft, right. BUT NOT ON THE WHEEL. I need the torque on the wheel and not on the paper or in the gear box, brother.
What size engine is this?
@ADY285 if a diesel gets on too low rpm for it, it dies much more easier than an petrol one
It is V10 TDI?
i gotta diesel... i love it, screw that plastic thing :)
they just made it look hard a real off roader like land rover or hummer etc could do that easy
Darmstädter Kennzeichen wuheey^^
Petrol is more volatile than Diesel Fuel, and automatically Petrol Engines consumes more than Diesel Engines . . . but definely it depends also how old or how good the engine is
Круто 👍👍👍👍

nice...
I see you have the optional rear locker

That is well done by the driver, but that SUV wasn't really designed for that. Need a stiffer higher lift suspension.
fiiyyttttttttt fuuuyyyyyy fuuyyyiitttttttttttttttt superrrrrrrrr !....
Hi, I have a question about this video. Can I email you?
sure
rad. What's your email?
@SneakyTweaky LOL. Funny guy. Funny. Trying to use my age to avoid the question. Actually I do own a car. A 1997 Jetta GLS. Now that we have that covered, do you actually even know how a diesel engine works?

i agree. thats what jeeps are for :)
Touareg is an 4x4 SUV isn't it?
It would look like a real arction if they would do that on Polo :P
@samsemtex was more of a point of interest, stating accomplishments. Touareg are not cheap so dont expect cheap parts. zer gut

@SneakyTweaky and I DO! Because it's not generally correct.
And then a Wrangler rubicon did it 15mph!
I just wish am in it =]
sieht sehr spektakulär aus, weil die verschränkung mies ist.....
2007 top
i still prefer the Jeep for a off road vehicle :)
@VolkswagOwned true, but still Id take the 4.2 v8 over the v10 diesel.
@SneakyTweaky you might have more torque but with a diesel you to have a turbo which means lag.
use your noodle before commenting
@superpatryk11 Girl is doing what she's told. Nothing more...
i was waiting for it to tip :(
@SneakyTweaky Wrong
@desireless4ever I do need to say nice Touareg though
Yes, for us it is a road that is why we won and you lost =)
do not forget it)
offroad ACTION ???
you wouldn't drive to the other side of africa with a car like this
anyway, its a good driver, work a bit more on those skills and you will become a real offroader ;)
offroad?
ok, if you are from Russia this might look light a road to you
I don,t think so that Diesel is not good for family cars, Petrol have a big consume
damn

0:46 close enough ;)
diesel is best only in TRUCKs and tractors!!! never in family cars!!
@SneakyTweaky lol. Diesel engines do NOT have more "power" than gasoline engines. Do you even know how a diesel engine works?
lol, "torture" not that at all...these BEG for you to take them out like this...I like that, wife wants one....but not for off road ;)
they are dutch ppl
If there isn't a 454 or 502 in it, this hunk of soccer mom metal shouldn't be in the pits. Stick to your on road hills and on road curves.
@desireless4ever What, do you think the torque fairies come and steal it before it gets to the wheels? You knob end......
*GERMANS*
