I love both games for different reasons. but i do wish they would have called it something other than DD2, and by doing so i think they could also have saved themselves from a lot of the negative reviews/discontent.
There is not but Cohh has repeatedly stated that he (really) likes the game and would recommend it to anybody who likes an RPG that contains micro-managing and exploration. The main reason that he's not playing it is that the game is REALLY big and there's too many games he wants to play right now.
Agreed. Loved DD1 for the aesthetic and feeling of risk, but never finished it for the same reasons. The grind just got to be too much. I'm about 20 hours into DD2 so far, and I am loving almost every run. I usually just hit the random party, move them to appropriate positions, and head out onto the road. I get to experience everyone's stories to unlock stuff and just fill out the knowledge of the game and synergies without worrying about losing an entire party. For Denial (first boss) I wasn't even expecting to reach it, but the group I got and the different RNG ended up building a pretty great group and beat the boss in a close call. Love it.
Yeah, Redhook said that only like 10% of people actually finished DD1....that's why they made the changes.....they wanted to keep it difficult....but allow people to actually complete.
I had so many games of DD1 that I would play until I fell off and had a hard time picking up my old plays. At least with this it seems that it will be easier to pick up after a time. I never deleted my Hades files. But I did find it hard to continue old DD1 plays.
Personally I feel the opposite about the games, In DD2 when a character dies during a really good run I feel absolutely devastated because I usually put a lot of luck, time, and work into getting that far with that team, and then it’s all down the drain, just like how it felt in DD1 for me. But in DD2, that feeling isn’t permanent, because as sad as I am over losing that char/run, I know I can try again pretty quickly, but in DD1 having an A team wipe just made me want to stop playing for sometimes weeks. And I feel it’s a bit disingenuous to say that DD2 is more RNG based than DD1, because in DD1 things like accuracy, and the lack of a shown turn order, made many things like hallway spider ambushes focusing down a Jester, landing 3 crits, 2 blights, and failing a deaths door check the instant Jester gets his turn is peak Darkest dungeon, and that situation is just plain bad RNG. The token system and the removal of accuracy makes things feel more like a chess match, where when I lose it’s because I made poor choices (at least most of the time), but in DD1, accuracy and speed meant that every attack you took could just end up doing nothing because you got unlucky *cough* leper *cough*. I feel like DD2 gives you and the enemies more control over what happens in combat but in a good way
I have 500 hours in DD1, one of my favourite all time games. At first, in early Early Access I was really sceptical about DD2, not enough progression, not enough attachment to the characters. But the devs did an awesome job later in Early Access of adding tons of systems and mechanics that recreate that epic sense of achievement and progress that existed in the first game. You can customize and upgrade your surviving characters after each run, you can beat the 5 bosses with the same party, there are so many things to unlock. It is absolutely my GOTY so far, the esthetics, sound and music are incredible too.
I liked the first one better, in this one you need to die many times to get candles to unlock most of the best items and then eventually win the game because its inevitably gets easier when most of the stuff are unlocked. In the first game I liked the longer runs with the same team and the loot that I got gave me more option for a build. In this one you can't keep your items is a bit bothering for me.
1st DD is way better for me because of character/base growth and attachment. In DD2 if your favorite character gets a crit to the face and dies you just say: "Oops better restart the run" and move on.. you dont get any sense of attachment because you can always restart the runs. Also, the roguelike system takes over RPG elements so everything is RNG based now. Hero shrines, Hospitals, which hero is going to get bad/good interactions at locations, if you are going to get hit with a 75% dodge token... This is a good roguelike, dont get me wrong but kinda lost the feel of DD since you have no attachment or control over most of the stuff going on.. its gambling runs all the time.
The attachment in DD1 was dangerous as your favorite hero could die outside of your control. It's offputting. Just like, IMO (IMO), getting rid of permadeath was a step up from XCOM1/2 -> Chimera Squad.

Great analysis of why DD1 and DD2 are not the same game. I finished DD1 and am still working on DD2, but although there are a lot of the same aesthetics, many mechanics have been changed to make it a refreshing game. Both are experiences worth trying.
I'm playing darkest dungeon 1 at the moment and I tend to run into moments when I run out of money. Which means the whole game just comes to standstill.i can't embark on new mißion BCOS I don't have money to buy provisions. Shouldn't the game allow to work Ur way up again? Newbie here at DD.

Thank you cohh, I was on the fence about this one since I never played DD1 and after looking at steam reviews, it had me on the fence. But your thoughts video lay all those doubts to rest. Now I will give this a try.
The game would be an absolute 10/10 if it had more areas , right now we have 5-6 if im correct. Its a great idea but for me falls short since you play the same stuff over and over and over and over and it gets boring
Right out the start I have to disagree with you on how you say the DD2 system allows freedom and experimentation, and especially disagree with the idea that if something bad happens it isn't the end of the run. In DD2 you are harshly limited because you NEED to be able to manage stress and healing in any team, and since only certain characters can do that, you are forced to have specific teams if you want a real chance at winning. In DD1 you had things like camping and hallway interactions that could help manage those. Also in DD1, if a team died it wasn't the end of a run, it hurt a ton to lose a high level team but you could recover since you should have multiple teams ready at any time anyway. It also felt like you had more freedom to play around with fun builds and meme comps. In DD2, one bad fight can completely end a run, I've had runs that were going great and then due to a few bad rolls the run is doomed. If you could choose what characters you took when you reached the inn that would be one thing, but just randomly assigned a character is stupid and always seems to put the absolute worst person to replace the one you lost. Losing my occultist because all four enemies crit in a row then he failed a 90% db resist from a bleed (he gave himself with a 0 heal) without me having a turn to react sucks enough, getting assigned a leper at the inn just makes me end the run and start a new one.
You don't need healing if you kill things fast enough lol. DD2 allows for far more meme teams, because you aren't limited by the fear of losing your character
Ah brother, I think you misunderstood me. I didn't mean a run like, a confession. I meant a run as in your ENTIRE save file. In DD1, if you lost your "A Team" 30 hours in, it could just be soul crushing and make you want to put the game down. I meant specifically in this one if you died or won, it didn't matter as you'd be going back in fresh for your next confession. I should have explained that better!
I kept having to stop using my units in DD1 becauce they leveled so easily. Upgrading the stagecoach gave you access to higher leveled units, so you dont really need to start over from level 0. They updated DD1 to address a lot of peoples issues, including the radiant mode. DD2 just doesnt have a carrot on a stick for me, I have no interest to just play to get random story sequences. I still dont get why the stagecoach sequence is even in the second game, its just a time sink. I could just play a dungeon at a time in DD1 but in 2, you have to invest 1-3 hours, depending on how fast you make decisions. Thats weird for a roguelike run.
Super agree with you Cohh! Me and my hubby both have been playing the shit out of dd2, and absolutely loving it. The first one we both found a little too disrespectful of our time. It's way too depressing and frustrating to lose your team after putting so much time into it. We definitely didn't play that one to the end. I just want a remastered and updated DD1..... That being said. I highly recommend playing modded DD1. It's just a blast! I recently started Black Reliquary overhaul and it is absolutely fantastic!
I skipped DD1 because I heard the RNG was brutal. I waited for this one as it looked interesting but it fell too close to Diablo 4 release for me to bother spending 50$+ on. After Diablo is Final Fantasy 16, so maybe near Black Friday or Christmas I'll look for this on sale

My thoughts of this game, based on tens of hours watching Cohh to play it. But first: since this is internet - full of Khorne corruption - I just mention, that while I have lot of critic against this game, it does not mean you may not like or love it. Not even that it would be bad game. But I feel that this game lost the atmosphere what first game had. I admit, I also didn't finish the first game for same reason as Cohh, and his critic is valid in here. But for this second game: 1) New 3D graphics are pretty and great. But I think original 2D graphics worked better for atmosphere: they made it feel that it is like dark comics presentation of what happen in very Cthulhuan story. While that new pretty 3D graphics with all that movement in all the time make feeling, like it is kind of puppet theatre. More funny, than dark (I like puppet theatre, but it does not fit in here in atmosphere). 2) Roguelite mechanics make it meaningless to care, if your characters die or not. They will be gone anyway. There is no same atmosphere for caring about their lives or mental health. 3) How stress works now, feels quite meaningless: it just effect on health, and it seems that in case your character is on death's door, they can only win from maxing stress. There is not depth or atmospheric meaning for the mechanic any more. 4) Wagon travelling part of the game feels pretty pointless. It could be done interesting - why it was not? (And why "shore region" is done like that? There is shrines etc, just like other regions... but there is just endless "wooden road" - who made it, and why? It does not make any sense at all. If want do it "lazy way", why not make it to be sandy beach road? Would make much more sense...) 5) Relationship mechanic of the game feels really poorly done: all of it is forgot for next inn (why there is inns in middle of end of world?). And it seems that all you need, is lot of alcohol to make everyone to love each others. I think it is kind of poor design. Half made. 6) While I like that there is now story pieces for the characters, unfortunately most of them feel poorly written. 7) While narrator have still great voice actor, the lines seems to be now pointless and meaningless. Not single line comes to my mind from second game, unlike from first one. And often it feels that those lines are now random and not in context of what is happening - often just some kind of meaningless motivation posters. In first game it felt that he really commented situation, and had his own feelings and desperation. Now, it is just great voice actor reading meaningless lines. This is not how life is taken. But so easily tides seems turning... 8) Music feels less atmospheric in here - how ever, reason may be elsewhere than in music itself. This time I am not playing the game alone with headphones, but instead watching streamed video about it, while some Cohh talking and keep volume of music smaller. 9) However, the core of the game, battles, seems to still be pretty damn good. PS.10) Travelling again and again to same place is...not best possible idea of how this could work. Feels bit like being a saw. All in all. While for the first game I would give 9/10, for this game I would give 7/10 - it is still good, but lot of things - little details what are important - are not as good as in first one. I feel or suspect, that main culprit for this was trying to make it more casual for console players, in order to try to maximise amount of buyers. So, kind of greed. I may be wrong - I do not know truth in here. Personally, I ended up to take the game from my wishlist, and I do not think I will play myself it. Unless it will be improved later much more from what it is now (what may or may not happen). But also, it is not away from me, if others like it as it is. No Khorne corruption from me... Edit: PPS. I never lost main group in DD1, but I got exhausted with the game. And curse of old save prevented me to finish the game: when being long time without playing the game, you been worried if you remember how to play the game any more - and that you may kill good characters because you do not remember how to play it. So, I ended start new game instead of continuing... and again get exhausted...
The graphics were better in the first. I don’t know why when the first game has a distinct art style the sequel will get switched up. This happens often.
They are EQUAL good, in each their different way. If the change gets the fanbase split and their panties in a twist.... thats just sad and bonkers! Now DD3 could have the best from both games rolled into one! Or I dont know... have different game options in the settings menu that skew it more in direction of DD1, DD2 or a mix. Instead of gutting potential solutions, include them as options if able to.
Biggest disappointed/letdown I've ever experienced in my 30 years of gaming. But I suppose I'm glad some people are enjoying it even if Red Hook has done basically nothing to alleviate the grievances of old DD1 fans like myself that have been critical of the game since Early Access over a year ago. Thankfully there are a lot of people that agree with me so I don't feel too alienated from the IP I love so dearly.

Lol
The graphics were better in the first. I don’t know why when the first game has a distinct art style the sequel will get switched up. This happens often.
Devs get cocky and don't listen to the community.
Instead of gutting potential solutions, include them as options if able to.
who cares about coohs thoughts really
@Vince0099 I disagree
See, thats why opinions are like assholes, everyone got one. Some are just more filthy than others.
@@frankenbou you would think so, but that ain’t how it is
@@ekucukkeles then care to elaborate or...?
Biggest disappointed/letdown I've ever experienced in my 30 years of gaming. But I suppose I'm glad some people are enjoying it even if Red Hook has done basically nothing to alleviate the grievances of old DD1 fans like myself that have been critical of the game since Early Access over a year ago. Thankfully there are a lot of people that agree with me so I don't feel too alienated from the IP I love so dearly.
This game is trash, It’s so boring playing this game. So hard to play.Sucks.
