Russia cannot ignite a war of attrition. And comparing this war with the war against Napoleon or Hitler is stupid. Moreover, many short-sighted people like to compare Hitler's and Russia's justifications for the war. The difference is that the occupied territories are REALLY RUSSIAN. In the Soviet-Afghan war, ~15,000 soldiers were killed and ~35,000 were wounded. The Afghans suffered civilian deaths ~2 MILLION. Despite Russia killing ~133 people for every soldier it lost, Russia gained no territory and it ended in stalemate. It also started with messaging from Moscow that victory would be measured in months. Russia vastly underestimated the tenacity of Afghan fighters to drag it out for a decade. The "You can't defeat a nuclear power" argument is only true if your intent is to invade and occupy/destroy a nuclear power.
      It isn't true if the nuclear power attacked you and you're only defending. Of course you could beat off the invasion and in that sense win the war.

      Nuclear sabre rattling is not for world leaders. World leaders know it will never happen. When the US got involved in Korea, Stalin was head of the USSR and he threatened the US with nuclear retaliation. Friggin' Stalin! And it didn't happen. All throughout the cold war, the world had a couple of close calls with nuclear war but not because of actual threats, but because of misunderstandings or equipment malfunction. Nuclear sabre rattling is meant to scare regular people, not leaders because leaders know it will never happen. A president in a democracy is more scared of losing their voters than of nuclear war. So if the population of a Western country believes Russia's nuclear threats their leaders will have to appease Russia or come to compromises lest they get voted out by their scared populace

    I always watch with interest your interviews to try and get a feel for what the Russian people as a whole want in life or understand what’s going on in the wider picture..
    I have come to the conclusion that the majority of everyday Russians support putin and his policies and want conflict with Ukraine and the west.. they believe that they are entitled to and are conquering everything, no soldiers are dying and no military equipment is being lost as Russian men and equipment are superior to everyone else’s…it does strike me a bit of Germany in the 1940’s… with the Aryan race.
    I also find it funny that they think that once the war is over everything will go back to normal. It will of course take decades before life in Russia for the majority will return to normal as what happens to the 400, thousand soldier hopefully returning home suffering from wounds, PTSD and other mental health issues. The freed criminals allowed to roam freely all with pardons, the economy in a mess and a flood of immigrants all promised residency if they fight in the “SMO” moving in with relatives and family taking jobs and squeezing out the native Russians…. Not a bright future,, and that’s if they win!!

    • @TheFeldhamster
      @TheFeldhamster 10 месяцев назад

      The immigrants will be the only good thing for them, that's why they promise them citizenship. Ruzzia's demographics was already terrible, now with so many men killed in the war and all the people who fled the mobilization, they urgently need immigrants. They won't be "squeezing ruzzians out of a job" but be hardly enough to make up the shortage of workers needed in the country.
      For everything else you're correct.

      Your conclusion is somewhat close to reality.
      What is even mind-boggling to me is how much Russians are willing to give up for their prideful nationalistic conquering wishes.
      I tried to ask many Putin supporters: “what are you ready to give up from your daily life to help Russia win this if needed?” No one can answer this. They didn’t think of it.
      However, when companies leave, services gets blocked, prices skyrocket-again, no reaction. This part is what’s so different about Russians and westerners, because western people would never give up their personal comfort for a piece of a foreign land.
