Enjoyed this. I’ve been killing turkey for 25 years in over 20 states and I learn something new every year. The greatest piece of advice I ever received was “if you don’t mess a bird up you can kill him” I love talking to other turkey hunters because you never know if they might have a card up their sleeve that could work for you.

For the best luck, purr, putt and cluck. I prefer a double or triple straight reed for fall hunting. I use a raspy box call for early morning assembly calling. I answer myself with a couple of kee kees then put the box call away. I only use cutters in the spring along with my friction calls. When birds get close I only cluck and purr a little. I've been hunting turkeys since 1973, when turkey hunting wasn't cool.

That ninja hammer is a dirty call. Everyone I called for last year and killed birds said it was the best sounding mouth call they ever heard. The best pure yelp ever is from the Woodhaven real hen box call. Woodhaven are the only calls in my vest.

  • @darrelllogan1274

Good stuff. One thing I figured out for my mouth calls is that I have to trim off some of the tape so they fit my mouth more comfortably, which allows me to produce better sounds more easily. Made a big difference for me.

good video and good q&a, but Ted seems to be kinda the whipping boy. Showem up Ted, the way I learned was to be in the woods at dawn and just listening. Make no noise but just listen to what the birds sound like. After my first season of look and learn I killed a jake and you would have thought I killed a 5 year old Tom. But since then I've become more refined and more selective, comes with age and experience. To me the calling doesn't have to be so precise as much as the location does and what your preseason scouting shows you. If you know where the birds are, call good and call minimal. Let the Tom talk to you and you work him. Have a good season guys and I'm looking forward to the 2019 turkey season. Be Blessed.

You are not using good breath support, Aaron. I am a musician who understands breathing, the diaphragm is closer to your gut. Breath from your butt, meaning fill your lungs from the bottom of the diaphragm to your shoulders. Oprea singers used to wear corsets so they could push their gut on a solid object to ensure that they are taking in the most air possible. Hopefully, this helps you call turkeys better!

Using a mouth call is difficult to master. You really need to listen to the birds a lot to actually know what you want to sound like. Also having an experienced caller really helps. It's difficult to teach someone. Someone learning just needs to be patient and keep practicing and listening.
