I'm honestly rooting for dickens. he always gets roasted in the debates and I cannot wait for when he starts getting better (because he does, I promise!) I'm also rooting for you almost reaching 200k!
I can't digest these people comparing Oliver twist to War and Peace & Nicholas Nickleby to Anna Karenina. Comparing War and peace to Bleak house is justifiable.
Recently read A Tale of Two Cities and it really sold me on Dickens. I’m wanting to read another but I’m not sure which..I may have to try Great Expectations
When you give Nicholas Nickleby 3 1/2 stars and I (who is supposed to be on team Tolstoy) gives it 4 stars!!!!! Was I expecting to rate this higher than you? No! Am I pumped to try and debate this? YES!
I'm all-in for Dickens and The Adventures of NN is one of the reasons. Also remember that his books were serialized and each chapter was a source of income. This practical consideration might be responsible for the change from stories-within-stories to no stories-within-stories and for the overall length of the book. I'm still reading Anna Karinina (my first Tolstoy). I really like the witty humor in Dickens and find humor sorely lacking in Tolstoy. Also I don't find the illustrations Tolstoy paints with his words to be nearly as vivid as Dickens. I think NN deserves more than 3.5.
Another lovely video Emma! I haven’t gotten truly into thick classics yet, but you did encourage me to read the picture of dorian gray and I adored it!
I love your channel. I picked up a Dickens novel (The Old Curiosity Shop). I love it! I purchased a copy of “The Christmas Carol” to read in December. Can’t wait.
Coffin core is perfect! 👌👌 Great video Emma! I’m currently reading The Mystery of Edwin Drood for school, and this was a huge encouragement. I thank you. 🙏
Please keep doing these videos! I read Nicholas Nickleby and Ana Karenina so I was keeping an eye out for your RUclips videos! It’s always a joy to hear your thoughts :) especially since I don’t know a lot of people brave enough to read classics!
Brilliant summation! There were so many things you cottoned on to.I loved so many aspects of this work: Nicholas looking at the playbill and being left in no doubt it was the Crummles theatre group as it included a castanet pas seul by the infant phenomenon, the African knife swallower who looked and sounded remarkably like an Irishman, the blind crow or was it a blackbird, the poor crippled boy tending his few flower pots, Nicholas stealing a glance at miss Snevellici's scrapbook, the list goes on.But your eloquence says it all❤️❤️❤️
Nice.... Dickens one of my Favourite Authors.... Inspired to Read...but I have different Book enlisted to Begin with sometime later this Week hopefully 😄.....Thanks Emmie for Inspiring to Read.
I love the Dickens and Tolstoy diary episodes. They are a great compliment to the Dickens vs. Tolstoy debate. Still on team Tolstoy, but I haven't yet read Dickens' later works. :-)
Dickens is a no expense spared Disney film with character development so strong you remember the people all your life and a story that drags you through all emotions the human species is capable of feeling. Tolstoy is the film your parents want to watch with grown up themes, relationships, social issues and serious faces….
I honestly can't get enough of your videos!! You are so precious, your voice is soothing, the vibes are immaculate. I am watching your videos from last year because I am that much up to date hahah. Love your work! 💖💖
Hi Emma, Great content as usual, thank you. Just got done with Nicholas Nickleby. Officially my second Dickens ever. Really enjoyed it but felt the plot was a little drawn out than needed. All the same it was a good read. Looking forward to what comes next in the series. Keep up the good work.
Dickens was an Aquarius Do whatever you want with this information (We were actually born on the same day - obviously not the same year - so he has a really special place in my heart 🥺)
I love Nicholas Nickleby and I love your enthusiasm for the book. So many great characters. If you get a chance, check out the Royal Shakespeare production of Nicholas Nickleby. It was like a six hour stage show. You can find clips on RUclips. One of my favorite characters in the novel is Newman Noggs. I don’t know if you’ve encountered him yet, but I think you’ll love him.
Honestly, this is just a coincidence or I don't know what to call this because I was just going to read Dickens all works for my literature class or at least his works on domination. Can't wait to get to reading. I love your videos❤
You stopped short! You should have kept going for just a bit more as you read that opening quote. The next comparison of married people to boxers is the funny part! This novel, as in many Dicken's books, is full of very funny comparisons.
I studies two dickens novels this semester, I read 70% of Oliver and watched videos for great expectations.. because I can’t handle his writing . I’m not a big classic person but Jane eyre was fine . Also I realized that I’m not interested in reading about classism and poverty in Britain … I regather try and read classics from other countries then suffer with him .
I enjoy this series about the Dickens vs Tolstoy books so much. Even I decided to read them on my own and now I'm on The Pickwick Papers (which sadly I'm not enjoying at all).
After over 50 years I still can't bring myself to try reading Dicken's again. Though you may have sold Nicholas Nickleby to me. It doesn't surprise me how you feel about Resurrection, definitely seen as a step down by Tolstoy by many readers and critics. I intend to go back to it when I'm in the mood for a redemption novel.
What i love about Dickens work is In the originally form came out in serial format 2-3 chapters at a time monthly. Which made it Imperative to "leave the Is audience/readers wanting more." This also leads to the money factor e.g. Dragging out the endings. Still good reads just not wonderful reads. Not Excellent as the 1st to middle part of his books usually are. I'm still a fan of Charles Dickens & Leo Tolstoy. For comparison, Dickens Pickwick Papers seems to be the English answer to Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes. there's so many themes that Parallel each other. What do you think?

Did you say 12 Sep? The video was filmed in Sep but uploaded in Nov? I was hoping our time difference could be lesser than this. I like better you sharing your present with us rather than the past, though equally important.
This is a reading vlog so she probably started filming back in September when she started NN. She finished this book at the end of October since that was they time allotted to it for the book club
Doesn't it slow you down having to annotate and analyze the crap out of fat books, or any books? What's the point? It just stops you from getting through as many books as you want. Life's too short. Just read the book, enjoy it, and move on to the next one. You'll get through a lot more books you want to read that way and not waste time annotating.
She takes notes and annotates since she reads for a book club and will debate on this. So it’s useful to be able to reference and find quotes. Also don’t tell people how to enjoy reading, just enjoy the video and let her be.
As someone that never annotated to someone who now sometimes does I can vouch that annotating adds to the reading experience. It helps remember points of importance or lines/paragraphs that I like. I will remember books I have annotated years later, opposed to a book that I just fly through.
Poor Dickens, he is suffering so much in the debates! 🥺 I love Dickens so much and I’m rooting for him! 💕💜
It’s a beautiful thing to see someone who has found their passion!
I'm honestly rooting for dickens. he always gets roasted in the debates and I cannot wait for when he starts getting better (because he does, I promise!)
I'm also rooting for you almost reaching 200k!
I couldn’t agree with you more…… I’m getting sick of Tolstoy always winning…..
@@fashionandbeauty07 yes! i do love both, but tolstoy wins by such a big margin that it makes me so sad because dickens' latter books are so good.
I can't digest these people comparing Oliver twist to War and Peace & Nicholas Nickleby to Anna Karenina.

I LOVE Dickens..to me no one writes characters so memorable as Dickens!
It's almost midnight here in the Netherlands...but I tend to prioritize your videos over sleep😬🥰
Cheers, fellow dutchie on the booktube side of the internet!
Always nice to see a fellow NL bookfan on here!!
Lol, same. Here at 12:05 currently. 😅
Recently read A Tale of Two Cities and it really sold me on Dickens. I’m wanting to read another but I’m not sure which..I may have to try Great Expectations
Great Expectations is fantastic! Please pick it up! 💕💜
A Tale of Two Cities is the absolute best
Great expectations is ❤️
great expectations is iconic & a very quick read. alanis morrisette references it in a couple of her songs!
When you give Nicholas Nickleby 3 1/2 stars and I (who is supposed to be on team Tolstoy) gives it 4 stars!!!!! Was I expecting to rate this higher than you? No! Am I pumped to try and debate this? YES!
Emma's rating system leaves a lot to be desired.😂Go easy on her in the debate! After all Rilke did visit and pay his respects to Tolstoy.😃
Thank you for brightening up my Saturday morning. Woke up at 5.30 and the new video notification came in at 5.32, awesome timing

I love Dickens ❤ 😍 So happy to have you be part of Team Dickens

I am reading Domby and Son. My favorite Dickens is Bleak House and Little Dorrit.
Emma I adored your first Dickens Diaries. I hope you will continue making them for Charles Dickens other books.
All thanks to you Emma for making me get into classic literature. I love classics now and I would never be here without you

Emma, idk if you'll make a video later down the month but im really excited to hear what you thought of Blue Period!!!
You took me back in time! I miss reading a ‘general’ book, I only read psychology 😅
Do you have any recommendations, I want to study psychology and have a goal to read one psychology book a month, thank you🦋
I feel you! Have so much to read for school I'm just staring at my bookcases crying internally every night 😂😭
Nickleby is great! I'm due for a reread I think. Love his Christmas works too!
Happy 200k emmie❤️❤️🎉
I will put it down as one of my Christmas read.
came here after watching the all too well short film because i feel so anxious and nauseous and emma makes me feel calm

Love Dickens, my favorite from him so far has been Great Expectations.
I can't wait until you get to Dickens' actual masterpieces. 🥰
Do you know about the theme park in England that is a Disneyland but... for Charles Dickens? It's so fun, rides, ballads through 19th century London!
Oh, I see that you did happen upon Newman Noggs. He’s one of Dickens’s great creations.
Love The Dickens Diary, good job!

I can tell how infatuated you are in this titular novel . . . I'll give it a read, thanks again😃😃😃

I liked Nicolas Nickelby, but all the characters stayed the same from the beginning to the end. No depths to them..
she looks really young, but she's probably like 20. . . 30
30, really ? 🙄 I'm pretty sure she's in her early 20s.
