  • In this video, I show that the song "What's Up" by Four Non Blondes and the song "Be Happy" by Bobby Mc Ferrin are pretty much the same. All it takes to realize it is to adjust the speed on one of the songs, and put them on the same key by adjusting the pitch.

Bobby's version sounds better coming out of the talking fish on my wall (Big mouth Billy Bass).

With relatively simple pop music it's easy to end up with the same chord progression or melody as another song, I've certainly had it happen when writing music. There are only so many combinations of notes/chords that sound good together. I wouldn't expect that there was any plagiarism or malintent here, but I suppose it's possible. If you want to see blatant plagiarism look into the story behind "Stairway to Heaven".

Of course there are only 7 notes, 12 semitones. But still, the number of possibilities is exponentially large. A composer might find a pattern that is simple and yet new, and if another one uses the same pattern, it is hard to believe that he/she didn't realize that it was quite similar to the original tune. When I heard "What's Up" for the very first time, it only took me a few seconds before I had "Be Happy" in my mind. I cannot believe that Four Non Blondes (who certainly have a better musical ear than I) didn't realize that.

@@BlueMoonshine I think that a lot of the time it's subconscious when it happens. You think "man, that sounds familiar" but can't place it. I agree the similarities here are numerous, it may very well have been on purpose.

It is, same chords in the same order, by definition it is plagiarism.
