Scott Agness recaps Indiana Fever loss to Las Vegas Aces - Caitlin Clark contained, offense slowed

- Scott Agness of FieldhouseFiles.com recaps the Indiana Fever 86-75 loss to the Las Vegas Aces Wednesday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, their first of two straight meetings.
The Fever jumped ahead 7-0 to start, which prompted Aces head coach Becky Hammon to use a timeout less than one minute it. The Aces took it from there and after missing their first seven field goals, likely WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson got them rolling with four straight 18-foot jumpers from straight on -- something the Fever were slow to adjust to out of the pick-and-roll.
The Fever trailed by two points after 1 and by nine at halftime. They got to within one in the third quarter, but struggled shooting most of the night. Especially from range (27%). Caitlin Clark was kept to 16 points, her lowest output in over two months (since the last time these two teams met). She was 6 of 22, including 1 of 10 from deep. Kelsey Mitchell scored 24 points and they didn't get enough help elsewhere. Their bench contributed just 11 points.
The Fever are treating this mini two-game series like a playoff series since they lack experience in that department. Here's my recap, plus postgame thoughts from Clark, Mitchell and head coach Christie Sides.

Caitlin did not make a political statement... she was set up by a woman saying that she saw Caitlin's "like" on Taylor Swift's photo holding a cat that said to Go Vote. The woman was setting Caitlin up in a no win situation by asking who Caitlin is going to vote for. This woman and a man have been throwing out no win questions at Caitlin's other press conferences, too. Either way she would have answered would have made 50% of fan base mad. Caitlin responded well and just said that it is important to "Go Vote". These questions are Caitlin's own business. Press should only be allowed to ask BASKETBALL questions. Caitlin is 22 years young! She has lived her short life in a gym. She is not a political figure. What else are they going to throw at her to try to lose fans... religious questions next?? Abortion?? World peace??

Scott, I appreciate your insightful, objective recap and brief commentary. I respect both teams, but I would ❤ to see the Fever turn up the heat on the Aces. The Aces have the skill and the discipline to win. A percentage of winning is mental and the vets use this in combination with physical skill. A young boy used a sling and some smooth stones to defeat a giant. So, a win for the Fever on Friday is possible. The vets come hard and young players/teams receive the same "floor hospitality." It's time for the Fever to go just as hard and stop leaning on "young." I agree, the bench has to step up or step down💯🔥!

The Fever especially Clark looked tired & I blame the loss on ONE person..Sides! 1. Where was Dantas? 2. Why was Katie Lou stay for 10 minutes! 3. Nobody guarded Wilson in the paint.
Sides continues to play CC in the games with minimal rest. 40-45 minutes every game is exhausting, both physically and mentally. Sides roster management is the worst I've ever seen.

Clark is a basketball player. She is not a political pundit and did not endorse Kamala Harris (tho I wish she had). She has every right to her opinion and I for one am grateful she invited people into the political process. Shame on anyone who insists on free speech but would deny it to others.
CC is too smart to endorse heelsupharris. CC has class and knows what's best for the heartland of America! She's a millionaire, her roots are of the working class of America! Her strong Christian upbringing is grounded in her faith in Christ and her American heritage! She'll vote for what's best for her family and this country.
Thank you Scott, good work. Like a lot of fans, I hope CC won't suffer a serious injury during play. So close to a serious whip-lash injury. I don't want to see any player hurt in that fashion. Let's ball y'all, not send someone off on a gurney. Thank's again.
The one long haired lady ref called a bad game against the Fever not long ago and here she strikes again. Hope she doesn't call the next game or any other game. Can't these things be investigated? There was a game earlier in the season as well. It's disappointing to see so many bad calls and non calls.
Scott are you a reporter for the team? The Aces are twelve deep and the Fever are only 5 deep, and I'm not including Smith, she was a draft bust and needs to just be gone next year. Scott, CC has been called for offensive foul two games in a row, Fever need to rally for CC so this is not going to stick. The Aces coach ran all 5 guards at CC keeping a fresh body on her all game, why did you not follow up with Sides on why Sides did not adjust to them. Watching film with the staff for next game isn't really a great answer. Scott if Sides is looking to try to rest her players with the bench, can you for the love of God ask why Berger does not get any playing time.
Can you please find out why Grace Berger can't even sniff the court this year? How did Celeste Taylor suddenly be able to see court time at a different club. The depth is low for Indiana yet for some reason Wallace gets on the court..even Samuelson and yet Berger can't. Something weird is up with the Sides.
Can you clarify if CC has been sick? Everyone online won’t stop saying that she looks sick in the past game especially. Is there any truth to it?
Physicality the Aces are the Fever is not! Double Wilson all game with Boston and Temi. Bring in Dantas to relieve either. Also tell Dantas to hard foul Wilson, make Wilson feel pain and think twice before shooting. Even if Dantas is ejected she must get really physical with her! Hull plays great defense the rest have to pick up the other players quickly because someone will be open by doubling Wilson. The coaches need to cut off the head of the snake first, keep Wilson under 20 points and they can win. The Fever need an enforcer let Dantas be it for now.

Sides is the worst coach in the W. She never defends her players with the worst referees this side of the YMCA. It doesn’t help that AB has the worst whistle and Aja has the best whistle in the league. I need Christie to get a T defending her players.
It's rigged against them
Aces are always going to get the calls, being 2 time champions. Aja Wilson will also get calls because of MVP status. Plum thought she was playing Rugby and still no calls.
The coach must have the starters rest, rest and rest before each game, waiving them from all these media appearances especially pregame !!! I bet if she does that, the starters would perform much better.
What about Grace Berger?
The bench players need to uplift their skill & strength. They are very needed for the rotation & game plan. Especially the athleticism. NSmith is the 1st choice of rotation but she need to improve her defence & pace. That goes with the other bench players in the team.
I think they’ve got a lot of growing to do still before they are a playoff threat. Defensively it’s just not there. Offensively the better teams force them into half court and they just stagnate. Work in progress.

We get the starters are tired. It’s not fair to Clark and Mitchell to have to carry this team ALL the time. It still doesn’t excuse Sides.
Can she get a little more out of the bench? Temi, yes; Dantas, yes; Wheeler, yes; Wallace, no; Katie Lou (❤️her) but no. Smith is inconsistent and can’t hit her free throws. Berger, eh maybe…depends on her shooting percentage?
It's obvious CC is going to get defended the most game after game, Sides should expect this and plan to set solid screens to get their backcourt free, for KM and CC or Lexi so they can get quality shots in. Watching film breakdown you can see Aces playing rough and not getting foul calls for pushing and grabbing Fever players but it seems like the Aces are better floppers. Solid screens with AB or Temi sets better pick and roll action. Katie lou continues to underperform and the team played better when she sat out the entire game. Not sure why Sides won't give Berger a few tries and develop Berger over Wallace or Lou. Wallace is quicker and plays better defense than Lou. Last year Berger performed better than Katie Lou this year. If you could put CC competitive spirit into Smith she'd be a monster lol

When this team doesn’t win, it’s the coach fault. Last I checked the coaches are not on the court shooting and guarding. When this team wins, it’s ALL b/c of Caitlin. Lol, that’s why no one respects you CC fans. Call a spade a spade. The team didn’t play well, CC didn’t shoot well.

Why does Caitlin not give "five" to the fans whilst coming into the Tunnel at half-time? ... the rest of the team does. I think I know why... she's hyper-narcist. She's fracturing from the inside and she knows everyone is looking at her while she avoids fans at half-time. Just my thoughts.
Pro Tip:
Stop listening to that voice in your head. It belongs to a fool! She does plenty of interaction with the fans! She's in game mode during halftime. Clearly you've never completed at her level. Her real fans know it is never personal! In game mode she is all business! The fair weather fans must learn to deal with it.
I haven't missed a favor game this year. However, after hearing that she's possibly voting for Kamala Harris, I won't be watching another game.
