Thanks Phil for this video. I looked up Dungog on Google map and it looks like an interesting place with some history. It would be interesting to see the area surrounding the station showing what’s available for visitors like shopping area, restaurants, bars, markets, museums, bus connections etc. A bit like a transit riders guide. It would promote use of trains which gives them the ridership it needs to justify these lines. Just a suggestion from a transit fan.
Been looking at the Dungog station and its incredibly low service frequency for a couple of years now, but never got the chance to actually visit it. I was so mesmerised back then that Hunter Lines didn’t have a lot of services to some of those remote stations. I guess that’s what privatisation can do to these services. Incredible video and I would like to visit the station myself one day.
Hi Phil, interesting seeing Dungog railway station. I have been past this station, but I have never got out here. It certainly looks like a peaceful area. I notice they even have "Mind the Gap" signs on the platforms. The Hunter Set reminds me a bit of the trains here that go to Warrnambool. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
I have been on that train station once before. I was going home from Coffs Harbour to Sydney via the xpt and they were bit head of time so they let us off to stretch our legs for 5 minutes.
Dungog is a very quiet town as I was there back in 2002. They usually have a film festival there when the town comes alive. Not sure if they still host this event now.
You are in Regal territory there mate and probably had that beer at (one of) the pub(s) the famous Doug Walters served his drinking apprenticeship at. Doug's in the Autralian Sporting Hall of Fame for his cricket feats back in the 60's. "Dungog Doug" once scored a century in a session and also was the first to hit a double centiry and a century in the same Test. Known to have a beer or four while waiting to go in and bat and there's sure to be locals that remember him.
Nice, I've only been to two stations on the line (Hamilton and Newcastle) due to infrequent services On an unrelated note, have you seen the CAF Civity at Auburn Maintenance? On a good day with no trains in the way, you can see the nose sticking out
If the then NSW Labor government ordered 14 of these then some endeavours could have been converted to Xplorers allowing the permanent move of the Dubbo XPT to the Dubbo Xplorer and also allowing a daily griffith and broken hill service and relieving the stress on the XPT's.
Not very frequent trains up there as a pose to Maitland and west, mainly intermodals, cement, sugar. You do get coal out of Stratford colliery but that has shit down now.
That station looks as if it's in the middle of nowhere! There is not a lot there? - looks as if there is nothing there! Are you sure this station is not on the plans to be demolished or plans to close it ? Do people live there? Interesting video but you picked a really bad day to go on a train ride out to the middle of nowhere with no one else at the station or was there ?
Where do you get the "J" identification from, because the Hunter trains are identified as "H" sets in that area. Only non Newcastle train buffs would call them anything else, probably a Sydney Trains I.D. These sets are New South Wales trains, not Sydney Trains.
Dungog is a significant station for the picnic train. I’ve been there heaps on the picnic train shuttles

I might go back and do a history video for my other channel @abandonedoz
Haha I love tipsy Phil! Great video! 🎉

The service isn't privatised, though.😊
Yes I’ve been waiting for this video for ages thank you so much!!
Great Video!!!
To deal with wind noise you can fold a small piece of tissue over a few times and tape it over the mic. It’s a easy temporary fix.
Wonderful video mate!
I'm hoping to go to Dungog when I ever decide to do so
Cool!

It's been a long time since I've been to Dungog.

That was a Whip Bird
With that station, do the platforms fit only 8 cars or can it fit more?
If the then NSW Labor government ordered 14 of these then some endeavours could have been converted to Xplorers allowing the permanent move of the Dubbo XPT to the Dubbo Xplorer and also allowing a daily griffith and broken hill service and relieving the stress on the XPT's.
I believe teenagers used to call it Dead Dog if, like an accountant friend of mine, they weren't into sports. 😢
Happy to report that some locals still call it Dead Dog
with the low frequency of service i would have to spend 2 nights in place like that.
Hi Phil just a question what camera do you use?
Not very frequent trains up there as a pose to Maitland and west, mainly intermodals, cement, sugar. You do get coal out of Stratford colliery but that has shit down now.

It is in a regional area.
There’s a few thousand people that live there so it’s a small country town.
No plans to close the station or line
