Strangely enough 42k is not the same as 2x21k. The distance yes, but the mental preparation for the event is totally different. Also the whole running crowd, the event, people cheering and everything is so amazing and worth the effort of very hard training and a very hard running event.

  • @Draddar
    @Draddar 3 года назад +5

I definitely recommend setting A, B and C goals for the marathon. I went into my first marathon with just a single goal, realised I`ll fail just after halfway mark and it was a huge mental struggle from then on. Eventually finished like half an hour slower than my goal, but determined to do better next time - and I did. There are just so many variables in a marathon, some might be less than ideal and it's really good to have the mind on your side at that point.

You've got this Sarah! These videos have helped me a lot. I am an out of shape dad of young children so I decided to sign up for a marathon because I thought I needed to try something impossible. I couldn't run a mile without breaks several months ago. Now I'm running 6-7 miles at a time without a problem. My marathon is in October. I can't believe I've come this far, it's already changed my life. Thanks for making videos with "normal" people. It seems much more achievable than watching world class athletes telling me I need train seven hours a day.

My first ever marathon was the Amsterdam marathon and I enjoyed it so much that I ended up doing it 3 years in a row. The whole city gets behind it and the course is great, the support is great and there has been no better experience than starting and finishing in the Olympic stadium. You have really picked a great marathon as your first! And I did it in the Wave Rider for two of those three times too, and so I can safely say you have a good shoe that will be comfortable throughout and especially in the later stages. Enjoy!

Hi, and I absolutely love your channel. This is because you show that you don't have to be slim / skinny to run. This has helped me a lot to start running. I started running at the end of 2019, together with my husband. And I do it with great pleasure and always completely relax. September 2020 I ran my first half marathon 🏃‍♀️. I was so proud of myself when I walked this one (without walking through). The next day only a little pain in the thighs 🙂 but that's part of it. This year I will definitely run the half marathon again, and maybe in the new shoes 👟 Keep up your channel 👍 Greetings isa

Philosophically, running a marathon is all about the next; the next water stop, the next mile/kilometer, the next turn, the next street post, the next step. Running the perfect race is setting oneself up for success in the next ___. This means being on pace (starting too slow can be as damaging as too fast), on hydration and nutrition and staying in a mentally strong space. This informs training because a good marathon plan sets up the next interval, the next training session, the next long run, and the next week. Sometimes that means having a hard day to build the strength and endurance to complete the workouts down the line, sometimes it's the easy day following that to recover and occasionally it's taking an easy or off day in place of a hard workout to avoid getting injured. There is no one essential workout that absolutely cannot be missed but by pushing too hard and getting hurt, many workouts get missed which will impede training. My first marathon blocks were done a lot like your old running, everything at this vague threshold pace and I never really got faster and my legs were always tired. Recently, I have started varying my paces, my times have come down and my legs feel so much better. I still have to remind myself that feeling good on the recovery days is the point! Good luck on your race!

I trained for my first (virtual) marathon last June and I had no idea how much speedwork would come with it! Speedwork is definitely not my forte, and the learning curve that came with it was pretty steep for me. I learned along the way to not beat myself up for not meeting the splits that my running coach had set for me. There are going to be bumps in the road and not every session is going to be a perfect session. But every session is one step closer to that goal.
My advice for you, Sarah: Give yourself grace! Keep learning and making adjustments along the way. In the end, no matter what it takes, you're GOING to cross that finish line in Amsterdam :)
I'm training for the Chicago Marathon right now (and vlogging it too on my channel hehe), so I'm right there with you! We're going to smash our goals together.

Your comment about taking each day as it comes is spot on. Little by little you'll get there and your confidence that you CAN do it will continue to increase.
I did Brighton Marathon 3 years ago and genuinely loved every minute. All the early starts and long runs are totally worthwhile. Best of luck - you've got this!! 🏃‍♀️💪🎖️

I'm part way through training for my first marathon after doing my first halfie last year. 4 runs a week works for me as well, but the long runs can be daunting and your confidence can take a hit after a tough run. But know that your body will hurt and you will doubt whether you will be able to get there. But just keep persisting. Hope you get a pair of the Wave Skys for the long runs- that will help. All the best Sarah.

Dear Sarah, for me, marathon is more about mental work than physical work. Distance you will conquer, and with the TRC and the TRC Fans you will have a blast! Go for it, keep us in the loop...

Just discovered the running channel and binge watched so many of your videos Sarah. Great seeing someone that I can relate to on a running channel, not just elite runners. You've inspired me to get back into running again after a couple of years off. Good luck with your marathon training, you've got this! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

I did a marathon 1 week ago. My first official one but 4th distance. I ran every day about 6km. I can do a half comfortably but the last 7km of the full is where your race starts. I was underprepared for this race so my advice is prepare well and then the rest is easy. Mizuno shoes are great and the should be carry you through. I used waverider 23s for my marathon. Sarah, remember one thing...forward is forward. Even on race day you may struggle at the end but keep moving forward and you will get to the end. Enjoy the ride. It will be up and down.

A year ago I was where you are now
I had run many halfs but never a full. Did the 4 days a week training and actually made my primary goal. I am an old man at 54. I am sure you will have no problem after 16 weeks of training😎

So I did my first marathon last October - the Virtual London - at the age of 64, after less than 4 years of running. I hit the wall at 20 miles but had planning running buddies to join me for that phase just to get me through. I was pleased with 4:33 but of course the unfinished business is (hopefully) the real thing this October. With the training not feeling any easier this time round, half of me is confident that I have done it once (I just want to get under 4:20 this time) but the other half is remembering just how long it took me to recover last time. I discovered Mizumo shoes during the year and will definitely be using them (definitely a newer pair!) for the big race.

Best piece of advice I ever received for marathons is to run/walk the long runs. You only need 15/20sec to provide relief to the legs and you recover quicker too. I did this for all my training and was astonished how much fresher I felt at the end of the race and I often negative split the run and broke all my PB's too. Best of luck.

Hey Sarah I only wear Mizuno so you’re on the right track! My two biggest pieces of advice are to make sure you do the long runs and just as important enjoy the journey. All you’re worries are natural. Fear of the unknown but you’re going to do great. Also don’t compare how you felt after your half marathon. The pacing and mindset for the marathon is all different. All the best!!!

Good luck. I've done 2, Sub-4 hour marathons on 13 & 16 mile longest runs and running just 3-4 days a week. A lot of it really is in the mind for an experienced runner with a strong base. You can also do more quality over quantity. I was running the hard runs of the Hansens' Plan and Crushed my half marathon goal.
I've done 2, 1/2 marathons on 3 mile max runs because of injury and once with 6 weeks of no running leading up to it & still ran the whole thing but 15+ minutes slower than usual.

I just completed my first half marathon last Saturday in 2:15 (I was shooting for 2:30 and I had sore legs so I’m happy with it) I have been running for 4 months now and I want to go for a marathon early 2022, a 50k mid 2022, a 50mile, 100k, and 100mile eventually! It’s been amazing getting in the community of running and I’m not looking at stopping anytime soon. Toughest thing for me is transitioning to zero drop and more minimal shoes now!

It seems that you're off to a great start. I'm glad you're taking care of that knee. I had problems with my knees and it took me years to find solutions. My first race, a 10k in 1988, was so painful at the end that I was sure I would never do another race. I limped for months afterwards. Proper strength training was a good start. It helped me. You might want to check to see if you need arch supports. A weak arch can be part of the problem. I got that piece of advice from the doctor for the Western States 100 mile after significant knee pain during the race. It also helped when I ran it again.
I'm just getting back into shape myself and hope to be in marathon and ultra shape by the end of the month. I'll be watching your videos just to see how you're doing. I'm always inspired when I watch someone new take on the challenge. Best of luck. You can do it!
