- 🔥Steve Stevens breaking down one of the all-time favorite riffs: "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin. The magic is in the details-using the open low E string and pulling that note just slightly sharp gives it that iconic edge. This guy has been criminally underrated for decades.
Absolutely. Like beyond comprehension. He doesn’t get enough credit
Umm no? How is he underrated with a 50 mill net worth? 😂😂

@@krash2fast99 well, Id bet most people have heard of Billy Idol but cant name any songs let alone any band members besides Billy(for obv reasons). 🤷♂️
@@andreaskarlsson5251 Here's how: See, money and recognition are two different words with different meanings. The term underrated applies to recognition. "rated" is right there in the name. The guy tries to steer him onto one of his own riffs, but he goes right into Led Zeppelin.
It does show you how humble he is, but I don't blame the interviewer. If you had a guitarist that had created his own share of iconic riffs, you probably would want to hear it too.

Because every great musician is a music fan too. They get pumped talking about the music they love.
The nuanced string bend shows how iconic Jimmy page's riffs were.

How fast I ran over to my guitar to try this out and it's a night and day difference when you've been playing it like the first example your whole life. As soon as you nail it, you instantly go THERE IT IS!
I actually can’t believe that I’ve been playing it wrong for 20 years, sounds so much better with the open string, sounds like it does on the recording ffs
I don't remember where I learned this some 18 years ago but this is how I learned it.
I think it may have been watchin old LZ concerts and seein what I could figure out watching JP. I used to do that with alot of the good players like JP and EVH especially.
Page said it give the riff a 2 guitar feel..
And JPJ does the same on the bass and amplifies the bass double. Cause it’s the G on the D and open G.. that D string bend gives it such a 🤛 🤛

Billy Idol never would've been anywhere near as popular without Steve Stevens.
You know he was in a band before his solo career right?
@@4578a yeah I know Generation X. I saw them in Hollywood around 1980. When they first came out they were trying to be punkers. I saw them opening for other punk bands but they didn't really fit in. They sounded too popish for that scene. They couldn't keep band members in the band. And then Billy Idol had a heroin habit which certainly didn't help. Steve Stevens also helped Billy Idol write a lot of his songs. And played with a lot of other people and did the theme for Top Gun.
@@kevinsykes2549 "fitting in" has absolutely nothing to do with Punk, you fucked up right there. You're saying no one listens to Billy idol for his voice, only because of Steve Stevens? You fucked up there too. I love his Guitar playing though.

Steve is a badass. Has never changed
Saw Billy Idol May 16, 2024 in Lincoln,NE.
Awesome show - it was like I had gone back in time about 40 years. Steve was throwing riffs around during a small intermission. He went from one opening riff that led right into another. He is a true master of his craft. The music brought a smile to my face and left me wondering where the time had gone.
I was there too. That was a great concert! So much fun. The crowd was so involved all the way through. It made it fun all the way through. I went to see Steve Stevens even more than for Billy Idol. Both were great! I'm class of 86, so their music has been a part of my life since my teens.

The riff in Eyes Without a Face is F'n FIRE!!!
I was by no means a Billy Idol fan, but yes, that riff, the overlaid solo, and his other work with Idol made me take notice of this guy 40 years ago
I could be wrong but that's his best solo by far --- always loved it
His music is always a little "off" which makes it so amazing... not the straightforward bar chords that we're used to playing... it made you think outside the box... as he's explaining here about Jimmy Page's style...
Every guitar player loves this guy. So original and creative.
Idk about "every" guitar player. I dont even know the guy haha and i play. Though not professionally. And given i probably have heard something of his if hes that famous, i just dont know who he is to love him or not. )) Probably abit before my time too.

Yeah, you have to be careful when using the term underrated. Noone who is a longtime rock fan would call Mr Stevens underrated. Underrated guitarists would be Neil Schon of Journey, and C.C. Deville of Poison. You're like, wait, what? My point exactly...
Steve is so amazing. His attitude, his playing ability, everything. He's just a cool guy.
One crazy part of learning to play guitar, and learning to play all your favorite songs is that in the process you discover that there’s a big difference between what thought you heard, and how you thought a song goes, versus how the song actually goes. Once you’ve gone though the songs sheet music or tablature, you find all the ways you were mistaken, and heard it wrong. Then it creates a moment where you listen to the song again, and for the very first time you hear all the little details you missed before. You’re hearing the song as it truly is. You then gain a whole new understanding of the song, and the song takes on a whole new life in your mind.
One of my favorite growing up ... when I was 12 years old...rebel yell album....& Blue Highway over & over....years later was on stage playing it....thx for the memories....

The bridge on Eyes Without a Face is one of the best guitar riffs ever, IMO. As a drummer I’m not hip to the difficulty of technicality of the riff, but the energy, rhythm and feel generated by it always kills me.

That's the beautiful thing about guitar. The same notes can be played in so many differant ways. The same note can have a way differant feel on a differant string.
It took a minute to copy that riff correctly. In January 1970 I had to ride my bike way down the hill to a record store on the corner of Hollywood Blvd and Highland to buy the album with my Christmas money, it was $3.
