To find a solid double overhead wave like that and tubing AND out in GBR no man’s land, is just magical. That was awesome. And here I was planning a trip to Mentawai
Sorry Rusty, I can't give you a definite answer however I have had a few good surfs at Mackay and there are a number of good local surfers which means they must get some consistency. But don't know about further north. Don't forget crocs, box and irukandji jellyfish which can be all be lethal
check long distance swell reports (the greater the time period between swell the better ie 10secs) and wind needs to be down under 10knts typically. Not sure of any specific breaks up that way. Any reef that allows for the swell to wrap around is good as reef faces on the barrier reef are pretty harsh. Let us know how you go, good luck
Not really, however my brother has been hit by an Irukandji on pretty much the same latitude as where we are here. But that has been the only time in 30years of surfing this area. Keep a tin of O2 and some vinegar with you if you are concerned.
hey mate im based out of port douglas.. i have a question about surfing the gbr.. whaat weather conditions do you have to have before you head out? thanks alot in advance
Yeah pretty much every one hit the reef. On the next trip the guy with the snapped board hit bottom and was still in pain 2 weeks later. I hit bottom filming. It ranges from 2m to about 1ft so just depends where you fall off I guess :)
Sorry mate I would be stabbed for telling ya. However I have surfed many other breaks like this and if you were to get the right swell and no winds I am sure there would be a break on the outa reef near you.

2 meters is fine, but with the force of those waves you still get pushed down, but 1 feet, thats crazy, anyway nice footage man.
I’m born/raised in Australia but can hardly understand a word they’re saying?! Nice waves 👍
