Students on Ice Antarctic Youth Expedition 2011 - arriving to Elephant Island (Point Wild) the site where Ernest Shackleton's Endurance crew overwintered in 1916.
Elephant Island is a rock sticking out of the ocean. It’s a inhospitable place. Shackleton realized someone had to get help for his crew. 6 of them sailed the James Caird to South Georgia Island. It was a 22 foot life boat that had to battle rough water including up to 60 foot waves hitting the boat. It was no easy task. Frank Worsley had been the navigator with a sextant.
