  • My name is Josh. Subtitles:16 languages. This is one of my favorite new songs they've done since Matt joined the group. It's beautifully arranged and the video is brilliantly filmed. One of the best covers I've heard of this song. I can't wait to react to more PTX. Thank you for watching my reactions.

Can we take a second also to mention how easily Scott takes over Matt's bassline whilst he's soloing ... all of them are soooo good at multi-tasking vocally. I think that's what sets them apart for me - I often forget there's only 5 of them because the sound is always so full- I mean sometimes there's literally only four of them when Kevin's beatboxing... incredible really. Love your insight to the actual technical side of the videos Josh - it can NEVER be too long when it comes to PTX haha - Pentaholics will be happy to watch over and over ... and then some !! Another great reaction - Cheers !

For all of with Anxiety, we can Identify with this song. The 'shadow selves' walking behind them starts out going forward and they reverse and start going backwards. This is superbly shot and their emotion in their faces and voices just show how we feel when we are in an anxiety attack. 10 seconds in when Matt hits us with his first low note I got chills, and when Mitch said 'See right through me', I choke on a sob. I have seen this video over 15 times now and it still affects me.
EVERYOEN READING THIS We are worth it, We are glorious, WE BELONG!

I totally get what you mean about Matt''s tone! Although there's times where I do miss Avi, Matt is bringing something special and different to the group. And i have got to give it to him, he is an amazing bass and singer. Each cover he blows me away a little bit more! I really like it when he's singing too :)

I've often thought that Pentatonix as a group weaves the parts together like a brook just tumbling down a mountainside. They are each masters of emotional singing, together they are mind blowing.

It is just a fact that you must watch all Pentatonix at least 7 times, once straight through to get the shock over, once for each member so you can focus on their parts individually, and then once more to just enjoy how masterful they are without taking it apart. Lol Of course you never quit listening to it and going over it because we watch reactors everyday.

As a pentaholic myself, what really stood out was how similar Kirsty and Mitch can sound if they choose. There were passages where I had to look to decide, which I think they may have done deliberately here.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Higher harmonies include Mitch, Kirstie and KEVIN! Listen the high harmonies behind Matt’s solo. And during that solo, Scott’s singing bass! Oh, and Kirstie SLAYS on this. The visual is tribute to Donny Darko movie in which this song is used. Matt cuts out at the end because he is singing a dissonance against the final chord. The rest of the band resolves the chord.

Great Reaction! There’s something to be said for intentional thoughtfulness. Your respect for their talent shines in all you say. Matt & Mitch harmonizing was a first and I loved it! At 13:04, the band faded and Mitch literally looked right through us (as you noted) ... powerful words from him having heard stories of his struggles thru his school years. I read anther comment speculating they released it during Suicide Prevention Awareness. I don’t know but the message of listening to each other during a time if “madness” certainly hits home. Also, they released their 1st original with Matt!!!! Happy Now!! Can’t wait for that review! Keep em coming!

His voice is so rich. I’d live to hear at least one song where it’s Pentatonix featuring Avi. He comes back just for a special occasions. He’s doing his own thing and I hope he’s happy. Just a selfish notion. That’s for your thoughtful reaction.

I took the streaking images behind them to be an homage to Donnie Darko, since the version of Mad World they did is more akin to the cover used in that soundtrack...and the imagery of time travel in that film, while not identical to this, is similar enough that it triggered the thought when I saw this video.

I describe Avi's velvety as bel canto basso profundo. You are right about Matt's tonal qualities being lighter than Avi's, but I think of it as a brassy tone, in a good way, with the clarity of a trumpet. Each of these amazing singers have an amazing range, but in addition, the color of each voice is distinctive, and adds to their ability to paint a picture and tell a story. If you haven't already done so, please review "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?," "Havana," and "Happy Now," three songs in which the color palate and costuming really enhances the experience of the song. And yes, they really are "a cut above," as you say. I think of them as the gold standard of the genre. All of the best aca groups do many of these things, but only PTX does it all, all the time.

Matt was also a little bit distanced from the camera in comparison with the very close closeup on Kirstin. Interesting. I really appreciate that you care enough to run the video back after you do a pause. You don't want to miss anything, and we don't want you to miss anything. Another thought--when Matt sings "Look right through me," he looks and sounds sad. When Mitch sings it, he looks and sounds angry.

Your analyzing & commenting on both levels "the singing part" & the visuals/"choreography" I really appreciate and it's a joy to listen to.

Tears for Fear wrote and recorded this song back in 1982. Gary Jules and Michael Andrews covered it in 2001. Roland Orzabal wrote it when he was out of work and looking and his wife was working 3 jobs to make ends meet. He would sit in their flat and watch the world outside his window from 9 am - 5 pm watching the 'mad world' go by.
I loved loved loved your reaction! The ghostly images behind them are of themselves walking forward in the first half of the song and then reversed them to be walking backwards in the last half of the song, walking in circles. My feeling from my first time I saw the video at the part where Mitch echoes "looked right through me" made me think of how he was treated when he was younger and different, that people didn't see him, but looked right through him. Just my opinion. Thanks for the great thoughtful reaction.

Not 2006-Clarification of the timeline: Gary Jules recorded this in 2001 for the film “Donnie Darko”. It went #1 on the Billboard Charts, where the Tears for Fears version was #3 on the UK Charts in 1983. They had such a great response, they released it as a single in 2003. It was also showcased in 2005 in Season #6 of CSI: Crime Scene Investigations.

I very much enjoy your reactions. They ARE thoughtful….. you DO try to associate Pentatonix’s musical expression with the lyrics….. you DO note how the dynamics play such a crucial role in both holding our attention (drawing us in… tension/release) and vocalizing the flow of the lyrics. And you do so much more, I find you both emotionally and intellectually communicative and if that can be considered “entertaining” then I am definitely entertained. PTX are amazing and you did a great reaction, of course I still want more Angelina Jordan, but was wondering if you have ever heard Postmodern Jukebox, it is hard to describe because not the same singers all the time, but they have several that sing for them a lot, the main guy is a piano and he rearranges songs, of modern pop to different areas like 30's; 40's; 50's,;60's and so on. Sometimes it is just a cover. Then they pick what singer they want for that song. One of my favorites is "Dream On" featuring Morgan James, It is great. Another example is The Spice Girls song "Wannabe" sang like The Andrew Sisters. A lot of fun and great singing.

It sounds to me that Matt's "backing off" at the end is letting the listener go. The song is meant to hurt. But by the way Matt ends, it doesn't demand you linger in the hurt. That's probably on purpose, since it could have ended on a deeper, fuller sound of despair. This way, it's sad, but not hopeless. Pentatonix doesn't seem to do hopeless.

SingerDad Reacts Have you listened to the early tour de force Macklemore cover with Avi? In it, The Trio raps! Kevin and Avi are astonishing as a rhythm section! That PTX was capable of such astounding virtuosity so early is difficult to comprehend! Another wonderful early video is “Where Are U now”-a Bieber cover. The last chorus is LIT! Finally, the cover of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”-a short video of the Elvis hit. I believe it was the last recording Avi made before leaving the band. PTX does it in 4 rather than 6/8! This adds an added layer of emotion to the piece! Also, the last chord is an A9! The voicing is stretched out to bring all the overtones to bear. The chord is anchored with a 3rd ledger-line bass clef A! The band sounds like an organ!

This song is very sad in a way. I love sad songs, so its perfect and for me, as well. The line "the dreams, in which, I'm dieing are the best I ever had is very personal for me.

Thank you again Josh (still a great name) for your thoughtful reactions. I really appreciate your approach.
If you've never heard them, may I suggest a reaction to a group called Liliac? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the vocalist's style.
Two fun facts to (hopefully) pique your interest:
    1. They're 5 siblings.
    2. Except for the 20-year old, I believe the rest are teenagers (don't worry, their skills are decades beyond their years).
    God bless you sir.

Love your reactions… especially reading the lyrics… PTX has been my main go,to group for past 10 years… ( on a side note, have you ever thought about creating another channel just reading a book for those who cannot sleep at night because you have that voice which is perfect for doing that type of channel content … ha .. seriously, you should really consider it… )

Crescendo-decrescendo... Avi is a basso profundo which is why his chest voice is so powerful (dramatic bass). Matt is a lyric bass, thus the lighter vocal quality. I would equate Avi with a contra bass singing those ledger-line bass clef lines.

I like your reaction, you get what's going on. I remember this from Tears For Fears back in the 80s. I love their voices, how each person gets to shine, and with such passion. Gorgeous. Thanks.

    First Noel
    Where are you christmas
    O come, o come Emmanuel
Did you listen Pentatonix classic album? Take on me, Bohemian rhapsody, Imagine and Can't help falling in love, Somewhere over the rainbow!!!!

Something I have noticed about their most powerful videos.....
The start almost subdued with Scott, Avi and Matt leading. The volume and complexity build until almost the end. You feel like you are being lifted with them (sort of). Then it almost stops and then they finish quietly almost to lay you down gently. Don't think I am imagining it. It is very powerful emotionally and makes for a very memorable and striking experience.
It happens in Hallelujah, Imagine, Mary Did You Know, and even Sing. I am sure that pattern is in other songs they have done. I wondered if you noticed this also. If there isn't a name for it I may start referencing it as the PTX effect.

Hi Daniel. I am actually a middle grade fantasy writer and this is, in my opinion, a storytelling technique. The song has a beginning, a middle (climax) and then it comes down for the end. They are masters at it. Thanks for watching.

I was fascinated by your insight into this amazing cover and music video. Pentatonix are legends. And this song hits hard right now and they executed the emotional impact perfectly. I cannot hear it without tearing up or getting chills. And I miss Avi too but I think he’s a lot happier now thriving in his solo folk artist career and Matt does bring something incredibly special to the group. A different energy and sound than Avi but still really amazing.

As a vocalist yourself, I think you would enjoy PTX's cover of Gold by Kiiara. What Mitch does in that song is truly amazing. The precision is absolute. If you haven't heard it yet, that is :)
My current top ten in no particular order:
    Aha! (Live AND official video)
    Somebody I Used To Know
    Run to You
    Come Along
    Papaoutai
    Light in the Hallway
    Gold
    Say Something
    Imagine
    Mad World

Of those 10, I haven't seen 4 (Run to You, Come Along, Papaoutai, Light in the Hallway). Great suggestions. Thanks for watching.

I really do appreciate the deeper, longer analysis, there are many short-timed reactions on youtube, your take helped me as I am interested in recreating these covers, your comment on what was behind Scott's surging style unknotted it for me!
Much appreciation for the time you put into your reactions.
I am interested in your analysis of how this acapella group (Homefree) layers and stacks tracks because they seem to pile many in interesting ways!
    I suggest their:
Boyz II Men - End of the Road (Home Free Cover)
Dierks Bentley/Keith Urban - Woman, Amen / Female (Home Free Cover)
Cam - Mayday (Home Free Cover)
Man of Constant Sorrow (Home Free Cover)
