      Hi Evgenii, thank you for getting back to me. I actually found if you toggle over the switch in the top left corner to make the rubric NOT be points based, you can write in PASS (pass description) and a FAIL (fail description). Your way of assigning a 1/0 point value also works. Like most things in Google there's more than one way to accomplish something.

      Hello Kathyn, thank you for your question. I don't think it is possible - rubrics are supposed to guide students' work; therefore, the rubrics are visible to the students.
      What you can do, is to create a standalone automated rubric, which is not connected to your Google Classroom assignment. Here is more on this: ruclips.net/video/EyYktDQ7BNE/видео.html&t=

    Where I teach we use rubrics not as stringently and will give kids marks such as 3- or 3+. Do you know if Google accommodates this by allowing teachers to put in decimal points in the rubric scores or can they only be whole numbers? Otherwise it doesn't quite serve my purposes as a student won't be able to see where on the level they are, they will only see point value.

    This is an exciting new Google feature. I work with a teacher support center. We created a database of student work behaviors to include in their student project rubrics. Right now teachers can download CSV file. Teachers asked us if we can make it easy to generate the desired rubric from the database into a Google form. Do you have suggestions on how I can get help with that?

      @@edtechii Thanks for the reply. In our middle level CTE courses we encourage students to do projects. We suggest rating projects with rubric focused on work habits. There is an online database of 38 different behaviors. The teacher might want to pull five to use to assess the project. Right now the options are to get a pdf file or a csv file to upload into spreadsheet. A teacher would like to be able to import these five rubrics directly to Google Classroom where they might rate the student or students rate peers.

    • @edtechii
      @edtechii  3 года назад

      Hello, thanks for your comment.
      One of the ways to teacher to provide feedback to a student is to leave a private comment. Student can view and respond to it.
      Does this address your question?

    • @freddyfriesen
      @freddyfriesen 3 года назад

      @@edtechii I really do not see how this actually addresses the reason the concept of the rubric was created. Okay, is the rubric used to bring the student to the level of competency or mastery before credit is granted? All this sounds like another form of holistic grading, the very thing rubrics were originally intended to eradicate. Just a fancy way of placing a red letter or number at the end of a learning objective. Rubrics were meant to communicate to the student what was needed to be learned. A well designed rubric should make it easy for a student to self-evaluate. A student who has mastered the material specified in the performance objectives should have no difficulty justifying to the teacher that mastery has been achieved. Remediation can be facilitated until all objectives have been mastered. The teacher should be available to assist the student where difficulty with an objective has been identified. A process of give and take until mastery is achieved. Stamping a number or letter on a student's forehead does little to improve the learning process. A rubric was intended to be a tool to improve the process of learning. From what I see here, this will be nothing more than another empty summative grade stamping. Nothing to really advance the processes of education.

    • @edtechii
      @edtechii  3 года назад

      @@freddyfriesen Thanks for the comment. What do you suggest as an alternative to the current grading process / method?

    • @freddyfriesen
      @freddyfriesen 3 года назад

      @@edtechii How do I distill over thirty years of being involved in working with rubrics using an online comment ? A rubric is a formative assessment tool that communicates to the student what is to be done, how much they have mastered of the performance objectives, and what still needs to be accomplished. Ideally, the teacher and student communicate on a regular basis via interview where each objective may be discussed. A real rubric is an excellent way to determine and credit a student's prior knowledge or competency. Basically what you describe is a summative tool that is the electronic equivalent of the red pen with the word rubric attached. Funny how something new and innovative can be morphed into maintaining the status quo. You may call what you describe as a rubric, but in reality it is a holistic device, which is the antithesis of a rubric. Don't worry, you have lots of company. The word "rubric" is trendy and is applied in all sorts of matter without the original intentions of the concept being applied. I have often thought of writing a book regarding rubrics, but the inertia of education to stamp a number or letter on a student's forehead does not show any genuine hope of changing. However, I did enjoy your presentation. You are a very good "on air" personality. Now fully retired after teaching for forty years in public school, I probably get somewhat long-winded without actually communicating much. Good days to you.

    Is there a way to make the point calculation not done automatically? I teach 1st grade and need a simple setup. I was going to have the rubric from 1-4. (4 being above grade level.). However, I just want the point total to be out of 3 points (grade level expectation). You mentioned Google automatically generate the topic score possible. Please advise. Thank you for your videos!

    • @edtechii
      @edtechii  4 года назад

      Hello Laura, thanks for your question.
      Yes, it is possible to make the point calculation done manually. To achieve this, go about creating your Google Assignment / Quiz as you would normally do, however, when creating a rubric, unselect "Use Scoring". This will remove any point values from your criteria. Then continue creating your rubric as usual.
      When grading students work, you will still be able to select their performance level, but Google will not make any calculations i.e. no score will be generated from the rubric.
      Try it yourself, and let me know if this what you are looking to achieve.
      Thanks!
