Shit, a lot of them smoked during the race. Buddy Baker told once of being passed by David Pearson for the race lead and Baker said Pearson had one hand on the wheel and the other hand was holding a cigarette.
@@Fitch93 Dick Trickle had a cigarette lighter installed into his cars. Theres footage of him smoking a cig in the (I think) 1990 or 91 Firecracker Pepsi 400. He was in the #66 TropArtic Pontiac.

Not a good comparison, since the 1964 was damaged and then the "today" was perfect cars. Try comparing 2 standard 4 tire stops with fuel.
Back then they didn't care about safety let him have a beer while on a pit stop let them leave sharp metal shards hanging off the car also they used tires with treads so they didn't have to replace them so often

The side force in an oval circuit is heavier in the exterior side. Thats why they only changed the exterior side tyres.

Strategy mostly, the outside tires take more wear sometimes, he also could have been far behind and only wanted 2 to make up positions. They do it sometimes
They have an option of changing 4 tires or two tires.
