The 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Is A Shockingly Good Hybrid Family SUV

  • While #Mitsubishi still has some work to do on its reputation in America, a strong lineup of new products helps people forget about problems in the past. When the current generation #MitsubishiOutlander came out in 2022, the company borrowed heavily from the newest version of the Nissan Rogue. A year ago, the #OutlanderPHEV made its return and it got a power upgrade courtesy of a new battery pack with even more power and all-electric range. Its a good family SUV with a stylish design, well made interior, and plenty of space on the inside.

      I own the 2023 Outlander PHEV and can attest that the Nissan bits are electronics only. It has a Mitsubishi engine and Mitsubishi single speed reduction transmission. Highly recommend giving it a test drive if you are even remotely interested in buying one or comparing it to the competition.

    As a 2023 Outlander PHEV owner with the SEL package, I can say I am pleasantly surprised with the luxury touches this has compared to the current Rav4 (which I've driven) and the current CRV (which I traded in to get the Outlander.) We didn't buy this vehicle for a 3rd row, so the lack of room back there is a non-issue for us since we don't use it. Honestly, for a non-luxury brand, you would be hard pressed to find a better vehicle for the price. Sure, the Rav4 Prime has better performance and range, but there are still markups on those and it's simply not as nice as the Outlander on the inside. We drive on average less than 40 miles per day, so we use little to no gas unless we are doing longer road trips. The slow charging speed really isn't an issue for us either. Most days we are getting a full charge overnight using level 1 charging. Overall, I think the Outlander PHEV makes a lot of sense as long as you are able to charge it every night at home. Additionally, I've had zero issues with the vehicle in my first year of ownership. No squeaks or rattles in the interior and no unexpected trips to the dealership. Very happy with my 2023 Outlander PHEV 😊

      @evelineprisanti5352 If you don't take road trips and keep your commuting to 40 miles or less then you can easily go months without filling up with gas. My personal usage includes road trips from time to time so we've probably filled up 6 or 7 times over the past year.

    We have 18k miles on our 2023 Outlander PHEV, same spec and color as your tester. Love the car. Great ride and tech. Drive about 70% as an EV. On long trips with battery depleted gets about 26mpg, which isn't great, but about same as our 2018 Rogue SL AWD we had before. We charge every night with our level 2 charger. Went about a month buying no gas. Have been seeing more gas Outlanders but haven't seen any PHEV's. We bought used and paid $38k. Don't think would have paid $51k as new price, but feel was a great value for what we paid. We keep the third seat folded down and would probably only use for our smaller grandkids. Excellent review!

    I regularly manage to get over 700km plus in range on road trips, which use the ICE a lot. Mitsubishi made a compromise with the drive-train by giving a more powerful rear motor and a full-EV driving experience over hybrid fuel efficiency. The pay-off is the driving experience AND better off-road capability than competitors. The CEO of Mits Australia took one across the Simpson desert with no mods other than under-body protection. Mitsubishi use the old 2.4 engine as it's a good match and has tried and true reliability being so understressed, the test-mule in the Japan proving ground has over 420,000km and is still going strong despite being flogged over gravel and through mud mercilessly. Other advantages are 240v/110v AC power sockets that have real-world usability for appliances and tools and the S-AWC is not just a gimmick, you can really feel it driving the car around fast sweeping corners (we have those here in Australia 😉)

    Pack up 2-3 people and their luggage, drive to a convention, empty luggage into the hotel room, and then be able to take 6 friends to dinner, which that 3rd row is totally fine for. And be able to navigate tight parking lots.
    The only thing I wish my Outlander had was a plug. However.... With no sort of electrification, my Outlander gets 27 mpg combined. Which is just a smidge /better/ than this PHEV in hybrid mode. And when things like the Kia Sorento PHEV exist.... I can't justify the Outlander PHEV.
    Improve that efficiency? This is my next car 100%.

      @kh8937 29 дней назад +1

      I live in a cold climate (Minnesota) and have not found that to be the case with my 24 Outlander PHEV. You can set it to stay in EV mode in the winter and a warning will display letting you know to exit EV mode if you need additional heat. The engine has its own cooling system with a heater core like a normal ICE vehicle and so when the engine runs/is allowed to run, heat from the engine will be produced and distributed when called by the climate control system. I believe many other PHEVs with a heat pump also use the engine’s cooling system to produce cabin heat.

    @2:32 You say "It all goes out through a one speed reduction gear transmission." That is INCORRECT, and shows a lack of understanding of how this hybrid system works. The ONLY time the one speed reduction gear transmission is engage, or is operating, is at speeds above 70 km/hr or 45 mph when the engine connects directly to ONLY the front axle, to provide additional torque and power to ONLY the front wheels, for high speed driving and/or acceleration. For the vast majority of the operating time of this vehicle the power and torque "goes out" from the electricity stored in the battery, directly to the two motors, and onto the road, via the axles and wheels. The one speed gear reduction transmission spends the vast majority of it's time being idle, or not used at all. Please don't say stuff that is untrue in your videos.

    I get that they’re trying to jazz up the interior, but it seems to be a strange mix of materials. For example, the door has a stitched upper section (which doesn’t look like the highest quality leather), then a large hard plastic piece and plastic door handle, silver painted switches, faux carbon fiber which looks horrible, and diamond stitching. Just seems like an odd mishmash.

    I wanted to like this car, but it doesn't have the tech or quality for the price point. The charging tech was good 10 years ago, but it is well behind the times now and the EMPG of 66 has to be the worse on the market. Top off the bad electric technology with very poor hybrid milage this car is not a winner. Many ICE vehicles get better milage. Indeed, this car is so bad that it makes the Dodge Hornet PHEV look good.
