- A towboat named the Mauvilla, was lost in the fog at night which Steve as the driver taken over, accidently strucked the CSX owned bridge and kept going until
he did not realize that one of his lead barges left a nasty bend on the track and the sunset limited was heading at 70mph towards it and crashed into
the mobile river leaking tons of fuel in the water causing a fire to burst resulting 47 casualties and 103 injured and some following survivors making
it the worst train wreck in Amtrak's history records.

Another shocking thing was that the tugboat pilot Willie Odom wasn’t properly trained on how to use and read the ships radar and the tugboat also lacked a necessary River chart and a compass 🧭
The Sunset Limited was delayed by a Problem with an Air Conditioner Unit and a Toilet in New Orleans. That's why the Train didn't cross it before being pushed out of alignment by the Mauvilla. That delay was very fatal. Were it not for the delay the Train would've made it across the Bridge before the Mauvilla Hit it and pushed it out of alignment.
And the next train would've been a CSX freight train that would've derailed.

@@LEGOandPlushLord I do remember that a CSX train crossed that bridge before it was hit by the barge but if the Sunset would've made it across before the bridge was hit, the next train would've been another CSX train that would've derailed.
@@thenextbigthing7692 And I read that the crash of the barge hitting the bridge didn’t actually cause the rails to snap apart. They just instead caused a nasty kink in the rails that would make it next to impossible for the Sunset Limited to even stop safely in time and avert the crash altogether. Let alone, be given a proper warning ahead.
It was the 1st worst train disaster in Amtrak history
Imagine the GUILT felt by the captain of Mauvilla knowing he caused the worst train crash in Amtrak's history
It wasn’t all his fault though. The boat didn't have a compass or a chart.
The unfortunate truth about this accident that 47 people lost their lives that day. 3 in the lead engine, 2 in the 1st passenger car, a few in the 2nd passenger car, and most in the last passenger car. May all 47 of their souls Rest In Peace.
My grandfather was one of the ones in the car completely submurged under water. He didn't make it......

For time seeing a train jumping a ramp
the bridge was supposed to be a swing bridge but was never completed so the swinging mechanism played a part in the bridge getting damaged. the barges struck the iron part oif the bridge moving it out of position by 38 inches putting the beam of one side of teh briudge right in the train's path
That is why I blame the way they made the bridge.

Great idea Evan, I think that is an incredible idea for a new Animation as I was just running out of ideas about another Train disaster yet I think probably I was thinking about doing that one in France and maybe that second one and yes the man got arrested and charged for man slaughter.

It was only after the crash that Odom realized he had gone down the wrong river
This disaster could have been prevented with a simple addition to the bridge. It was designed as a swing bridge but after the swing mechanism was removed (or it may have never been installed) a concrete block that would have stopped the bridge from moving was never added so it was left free to swing. That and at the time the track signal would turn red if the rails were broken, but because they had only bent the signal remained green and the train continued on at speed.
Better yet the disaster would have been prevented if it weren't for the delay in New Orleans

@@jonahmoran3751 The Sunset Limited was held up in New Orleans by a problem with one of the Air Conditioning Units and Toilets. Perhaps I should say that the accident would never have happened if a more experienced Towboat Pilot was at the helm instead of Odom because he was not properly trained to read the radar.

Even though Willie Odom (the tugboat driver) made this tragedy, he still help some people out. HUGE respect for him. And the ones who lost their lives.
He only made the tragedy because he didn't know where he was.

@@thenextbigthing7692 And Actually, it was a Towboat that pushed three barges into the Big Bayou Cat Bridge. The NTSB made recommendations to prevent an accident like this from being repeated which included that only properly trained pilots should be placed at the Helm of a Towboat and all Boats bring a Compass and Chart of the waters.
The passengers that were in the water during the incident haded 4 choices 1 get eaten by alligators 2bitten by snakes 3 burned alive in one of the burning cars and 4 drown if they are lucky they have escaped

The video was great but as an FYI, the train cars was on fire because 312’s fuel tank leaked the diesel fuel which sparked a fire. So the only thing you’ve missed on the video was the fire, otherwise! Your video was great

819 wasn't lucky at all !!! after the accident all three Amtrak locomotives and cars that fell into the water were scrapped while the coaches of the Amtrak train that didn't fall into the water continue to serve Amtrak to this day

I’ll see what I can archive. Gathering information on real world events can be difficult and can rely on reputable sources. That was in 1999 and the one I’m doing is over 50 years before that one in 1953 feat. Big Boy 4005 with three men running the blocky train.

The real story was that the weather was foggy which meant he couldn’t see the bridge and plus it wasn’t lit up and the tugboat pilot wasn’t properly trained on how to read the radar or bring other necessary things with him such as a River chart and a compass
That is the worst wreck in Amtrak's history and Amtrak 819 was built in 1976
Genesis engines (like 819) were not built until the early 90s. Some F40PH's were built in 1976 and on, but definitely not a Genesis.
