The pedal set up is an Axis double on the 22 kick on the right (NOT triggered) The 18 kick drum on left has a single Sonor 400 pedal (also NOT triggered) I use 2 Sonor 600 series Hi Hat stands... one to the right of my right kick pedal, and one to the left of the 18 pedal. To the left of the left hat, there is a Sonor 400 with a Ribbon Crasher on. Hope it clears up the confusion. Cheers. D.
Everyone chill, Derek stated himself on his forum that ehre is no triggers in this video. His right kick is 22" and it is set up to an Axis doublepedal. His left kick is an 18" and it has a sonor single pedal (most likely 200/400 series). Once again, NO TRIGGERS!
I was looking at his book the other day in a music store...pretty killin stuff. He seems like a heavy heavy drummer, yet with a lot of general knowledge about how to not stress your self and such. It's good to see.
Hey guys it's D. That snare is just a standard Sonor Delite 14 x 6. Right out the box, basically. I think they are the Sonor snares are the best sounding out there. Cheers. D.
I use them for certain things. Live, I always use them. You can't get the type of sound at 110db that the trigger provides out of a mic. I'm fairly consistent and don't need them up until... double bass at 240 or higher. That's why some of the faster videos have the triggers and mics and videos like these....that aren't so fast....just have mics. It depends on what I can get away with to achieve the right sound. D.
its the Sonor Giant Step pedal, but i think he is using it for an "accent" sound or something, like the effect pedal for a guitar, cuz if you look at the beater heads, the right bass drum is clear, and the left has a coated look
i love triggers frankly. ive never used them but they jsut seem to sound so much better, and for a double bass drum kit it jsut tweaks the sound up nice. plus frankly how awesome do you feel sat behind a kitthat is wired up electrically too lol?
nice to see a good answer there!! i think the same too, i have an electric drum and if i tap on my bass it sounds great but i still practicing slow speed and then gaining speed i dont cheat... but u also need to have a good control of the pedal otherwise it could sound when you dont want it to
i wanna know how you play double pedal without ur feet sliping up the pedal board. maybe its because i use dw5000? or im doing something wrong or just axis are super grippy someone replyy help!
im not sure about he not using triggers... the bass sound really clear and also weird, not like is use to sound, if u know what i mean... the left one is not using but it has a different sound like it is too low or something
I just wanted 2 ask,how do u beat ur bass drum? cuz i couldnt see ur feet on the pedals! @_@ do u step only with ur fingers at the pedals end or? im rly curious i liked the way it sounded
@Jleedrummermetal well, i mean if they're set right and if you do them cleanly yes, but it makes it so there's no volume fluctuation between left and right =] ....and if you're lazy you don't have to tune your bass drum very well either XD
derek once said, he has two bassdrums cuz it looks cool. :P also he can work with two different bass drum sounds, in the "multi pedal blasting" you can hear that the other bassdrum sounds way different.
Well, This kit was one I got a great deal on. Sonor delite and I think I got everything for around 3700? The cymbals...I've collected over the years so...I don't now. Maybe about 1500 in brass... then there's the hardware. Got to be at least 800 hundred bucks there. Ugh...I don't want to think about it! Haha. D.
14x6 Sonor DeLite Snare. Most likely Coated Ambassador over one of Ludwig's snare heads (I don't know what kind, all I know is that Derek said they are some of the best snare heads)
triggers are vibration sensors that you put on ur drums that set of a synthetic drum sound. some people consider them cheating which is bullshit, and im not saying that cause i use triggers cause i dont cause they sound awful.
Nope, its miced and EQed to sound like that, a nice tight head with some muffling and a low resonant head gives me a similar sound, but I've bought a set of triggers for myself, since I dont have the Equipment to record that he does!
Derek no longer uses triggers... His main bassdrum with the clear head is smaller then the other bassdrum with the coated head, the main kick gives a more metal sound and the other one gives a more natural boomy sound to add flavour to the drum parts.
looks weird how the 2 toms are switched. it seemed a bit more logical when he had 3 toms in front, with a smaller one on the right (i know why, dont bother explaining).
I know, I just realized after posting that it was another drummer I was thinking of who didn't trigger. Its okay though because derek is good at triggering a realistic bass drum sound. Most drummers just amp it up waaaaaaaay too clicky.
i seriously dunno how people can't find creativity in this video, i see lots of it, 1:00 - 1:15 is insane, actually the whole song is insane
The pedal set up is an Axis double on the 22 kick on the right (NOT triggered)
The 18 kick drum on left has a single Sonor 400 pedal (also NOT triggered)

You are absolutely killing the drums. Way to go!
I agree totally. It really cool to see him playing a bit slower and more groovily!
I was looking at his book the other day in a music store...pretty killin stuff. He seems like a heavy heavy drummer, yet with a lot of general knowledge about how to not stress your self and such. It's good to see.
my fav drummer right here... so beastly.. listen to how crisp that snare sounds.. beautiful carnage.. i love it
The overhead microphones are Shure SM-81 small diaphragm condensers. A studio classic for drum overs and hi-hats!
Hey guys it's D.
That snare is just a standard Sonor Delite 14 x 6.
Right out the box, basically.
I think they are the Sonor snares are the best sounding out there.
Cheers.
D.
totally great....nice cam position...you can see way more....awesome sound quality...
DRUM ON!
That was fantastic, Derek. The playing and sound quality is some of the best I have seen from you. Cheers, and here's to future success.
Besides the great drumming, the drums sound great and natural too, the hats also sound perfect.
SO Sick.. He does a right foot and left hand flam.. really cool idea
This is awesome! So much more creative and interesting than Hate eternal.
I use them for certain things.
Live, I always use them. You can't get the type of sound at 110db that the trigger provides out of a mic.

everything is amazingly perfect and precise
thats a great idea with the dime, im gonna use that on my kit.
Byzance 14" medium hats
Cheers.
D.
Those meinl cymbals really kick ass, same with snare.
man, that is the bass drum from hell!! it's huge!! love the kit!
great fills, great patterns, incredible grooving!
That was great. No triggers right? The Sonor Giant Step bassdrum setup is nice!
This is perfection 🙆❤️
god i love the sound of your drums. If only mine sounded that beautiful, then I'd never get off the drum set haha. Great song, sounds bad ass!
This is my favorite of derek's videos
Wow! that was awsome his drums sound awsome the guitars sounds awsome derek is awsome!
master u have the best musicallity of all drummer of xtreme metal
i love that snare sound...its so badass.
@Pearlcussion No he use a axis double pedal and the other is a sonor giant step pedal.
Loving it, absolutely loving it!!!
its the Sonor Giant Step pedal, but i think he is using it for an "accent" sound or something, like the effect pedal for a guitar, cuz if you look at the beater heads, the right bass drum is clear, and the left has a coated look
He is like a bolt of lighting. I wonder what sorts of BPM he can do. Well he is an amazing drummer what ever he can do.
looks like an axis doublepedal on the right bassdrum (triggered) and sonor pedals on hihats and the left bassdrum (not triggered)
Derek's sonor pedals are not Gian Step series (which is 600 Series sonor hardware) all of the sonor pedals that Derek uses are from the 400 series.
i love triggers frankly. ive never used them but they jsut seem to sound so much better, and for a double bass drum kit it jsut tweaks the sound up nice. plus frankly how awesome do you feel sat behind a kitthat is wired up electrically too lol?
his coordnation is amazing
nice to see a good answer there!! i think the same too, i have an electric drum and if i tap on my bass it sounds great but i still practicing slow speed and then gaining speed i dont cheat... but u also need to have a good control of the pedal otherwise it could sound when you dont want it to
there's no moon gel on his toms. the black things you see on top of his toms are mics :)
I dont know if you got your answer, but the reason he is using a double pedal is because he uses the other bass drum for a different sound.
Awesome vid derek!!! Is that the same kit you used at your drum clinic in belgium?
It's either Sonor Delite Series or SQ2.
I'm pretty sure they are both 22"? I recall him saying he put on a thicker skin and tuned it lower, I could be wrong.
love it-cant wait
Hey can anybody answer my question.
Why is that some drummers have their Toms from Low to High, instead of High to Low?
he is using an axis double pedal and on his left bass is a sonor pedal
Logo's seem to be Remo I think...
Cool thanks bro. In other news, does anybody know the name of this tune?
anyone know why he has a double bass pedal along with two bass drums? just a little observation that needed questioning
somthing kind of cool that i found
is that the lower quality drumsets have really kick ass bass drums on them
like just shove a pillow in and play
They help with them sounding more pronounced and not get as lost in the mix of other drums.
I must know what type of snare and size it is! Im in love with it everytime I hear it in your videos
But you can see the Beater working, or not? ;-)
This video used to be in a much higher quality (we could actually see his movement) what happened?
Both Serpents Rise albums are available on his site for free :)
i wanna know how you play double pedal without ur feet sliping up the pedal board. maybe its because i use dw5000? or im doing something wrong or just axis are super grippy someone replyy help!
He did play for Nile for a short time and Hate Eternal.
Hes got plenty of Axis pedals, he used to have one on the left bassdrum but i'd imagine he is using the Sonor to save a little bit of space.
im not sure about he not using triggers...
the bass sound really clear and also weird, not like is use to sound, if u know what i mean... the left one is not using but it has a different sound like it is too low or something
I just wanted 2 ask,how do u beat ur bass drum? cuz i couldnt see ur feet on the pedals! @_@

It not the SQ2 snare..Normally Derek use another snare than the compagny basic snare (normally wood snare)
first time i can see somth good from derek..
@MattyCairnsDrummer mostly byzance series! today he plays Soundcaster Fusion Cymbals!
Well,
This kit was one I got a great deal on.
Sonor delite and I think I got everything for around 3700?
The cymbals...I've collected over the years so...I don't now.
Maybe about 1500 in brass...

Ugh...I don't want to think about it! Haha.
D.
AND DEREK!!! where the hell can i get this song? I love it, you should post some Mp3s on the forums!!!
basses sound amazing whats the trick?
14x6 Sonor DeLite Snare. Most likely Coated Ambassador over one of Ludwig's snare heads (I don't know what kind, all I know is that Derek said they are some of the best snare heads)
triggers are vibration sensors that you put on ur drums that set of a synthetic drum sound. some people consider them cheating which is bullshit, and im not saying that cause i use triggers cause i dont cause they sound awful.
hes second bass drum and the hi-hat is with sonor pedals
best vid on youtube!
what overhead condensers are these? they sound excellent
Nope, its miced and EQed to sound like that, a nice tight head with some muffling and a low resonant head gives me a similar sound, but I've bought a set of triggers for myself, since I dont have the Equipment to record that he does!
01:55 the riff sounds like old Entombed, love that.
out of the dozens of times i've watched this video, i have never noticed the overhead mics hahah
Please explain where you see/hear these gravity blasts.
guys, do you know what head does he have on the snare? the sound's awesome!!!
Probably a Coated Ambassador.
@Jleedrummermetal it evens out the kick strokes so it sounds perfect =]
Derek no longer uses triggers... His main bassdrum with the clear head is smaller then the other bassdrum with the coated head, the main kick gives a more metal sound and the other one gives a more natural boomy sound to add flavour to the drum parts.
No, there is not triggers on it. You can hear differences between left and right and there is dynamics. Aka. no triggers.
Awesome.
Derek are you going to get axis to send you a single pedal for your other bass drum?
yea it makes them stand out and be heard
Can someone tell me what the song is called in this video please?
That was pretty fucking sick man...
You can use mics and the same sound triggers give off.
thats true. Kollias talks about just that in one of the vids up here.
@Tylerthemetalking oh cool thanks!
its a remo but i dont know the exact kind he is using
would it be alright if i posted a video from derek on my account?
does anyone know what kinda pedals he uses... if u do just message me
I'm sorry, I'm not a drummer and i have no idea what triggers are, or why it's impressive that he isn't using them. Could someone enlighten me?
Paiste are great cymbals, DEREK OWNS!!!
It's for the left bassdrum, which is tuned down. It's not that hard to see...
He doesn't trigger anything anymore. He uses the 18" for a different sound and to do fills.
That why I said " of any good brand"...I meant Any good brand of high level, if you prefer :)
looks weird how the 2 toms are switched. it seemed a bit more logical when he had 3 toms in front, with a smaller one on the right (i know why, dont bother explaining).
@opethbloodbath he has the other bass drum tuned differently
hey, are those contact mics on the kit?
I know, I just realized after posting that it was another drummer I was thinking of who didn't trigger. Its okay though because derek is good at triggering a realistic bass drum sound. Most drummers just amp it up waaaaaaaay too clicky.
