Congrats for getting certified! You learned how to snowboard and now scuba dive. Love watching you learn new things. Love the gear. Great job overcoming your fear of swimming and water. ❤
This video is right on time for me! My wife and I are headed to get our open water certification next week. I've wanted to pick up the apple watch ultra for a while now, and this video helped confirm a few things. Was really helpful to see you using the watch while diving and explaining things, thank you!
I wish I had even a fraction of your spontinuity and love of adventure. It always seems like you are having so much fun. Stay safe out there, adventurer.
Not sure if you would be seeing this but I have been watching your videos for years now. Thank you making such amazing content and being the kind free spirited person you are. Your video have helped in very dark times. Thank you.
@Justine! This is the smartest and best video from any tech vlogger that I’ve seen lately. Instead of doing the same video that any other vlogger will post about Watch ultra (6 mo using the watch, Should you buy…none sense). You used it in one of the many ways it was intended for 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Thank you
Did my first dive 5 days ago on one of the Portuguese islands, then again 3 days later. It’s like exploring Mars. Something that I can’t truly describe, except that is an alien experience thats fantastic.
I have used my Ultra Watch on several dives. On my last dive trip to the Flower Gardens the app work well on the first dive. On the second dive the low battery alarm went off and would not allow me to use the app. It was at 49% which should have been enough. At this time the watch started acting weird not allowing me to use the app even after a full charge. I am waiting to hear back from Oceanic. On my previous dive trip using a dry suit it set my emergency notice off sending my family a 911 message. This was caused by the position of the watch and not the app. So 3 trips, 10 dives. I am not convinced that this is a good app/watch mix. I will continue to use and evaluate it on my next trip to California. i only consider this a backup. On a positive note the Catalina dive park is an awesome place for both new divers as well as experienced divers. It is so nice and easy to take the boat over and do some diving the go back home in the evening.
I feel similarly. I'm happy to have it with me (as a backup to my backup), and it's fun to play with it, but it doesn't quite feel "legit". The sync with the iPhone app is also a little wonky at times. I assume your Watch called 911 because the back of your hand pushed against the crown and triggered the alert? That happened to me a lot until I disabled the emergency 911 dialing feature.
Awesome, welcome to the family! Come to Fakarava in French Polynesia, best place ever to dive 😉 And you will get to see literally walls of sharks (but they are nice ones in Polynesia 😃). For the log book, I highly recommend you to have a paper one. There is nothing like adding a stamp to your log book and showing these off to other fellow divers. It's like your passport with all the stamps.
Great video. Kudos for scoring all that dive gear. You’ve almost convinced me to get an Apple Watch Ultra. You might want to check into being some sort of PADI ambassador, you’d be perfect.
Congratulations on becoming a Scuba diver and Open Water certified! That the Apple Watch Ultra was an motivation for getting you into this offers hope that it will do the same for others. My wife tells me that her Ultra has also caused her to start thinking about getting certified. And your video is helping too. So, please do more of these. And how about the shock of that water temp! I’ll never forget the headache I got when I first dived in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts in early spring. Horrid! Thanks again for doing this.
I love diving been doing it for over 20 years. Try Cabo if you want to dive with big animals like whales and sharks, there is also the sand falls which are amazing. I’m happy you are enjoying it is an amazing sport.
I'm so jealous about your dive spot. I have dove in alot of places in the world, Hawaii, Florida keys, Caribbean and in California, and my favorite is the kelp forests of Catalina. You feel like you are flying through trees. I love that feeling. I used to teach High school kids to dive, and our boat dives for certification were off the shores of Catalina, but that was along time ago and we had to use math to planour dives. I love what they have come up with to make diving safer. And remember, the reason you dive with a buddy, is to have somebody to stab to let you get away from a shark. 😁
I have often used the Suunto. This year I got to use the Peregrine which I found quite amazing. I have not used the Apple. I have heard good things about it. I hope it is as rugged as the industry leaders like Suunto and Shearwater. As for your buoyancy, you will start getting a better hang of it after 15+ dives.
So glad you are diving. I got my PADI Open Water at that spot in Catalina a fews back. The most dangerous thing in California is Moray Ells. But they shouldn't pose a threat as long as you don't shove your arm into crevices. If you see a Barracuda, don't wiggle your fingers and you will be fine too :) Have fun.
with the price of getting an apple ultra you might as well as get a shearwater perdix 2 to get the AI integration. I am not too sure about the CNS calculation, Nox tables or NDL tables that apple uses but I would trust shearwater more. Also the screen is larger with a built in compass so the legend is easier to read under water. so to each their own.
My only suggestion (as a complete non-diver) is to find a way to view some of Lloyd Bridges’ work in Sea Hunt 😊 This video moved the Apple Watch Ultra up a notch or two in my estimation. It’s the first real world demonstration I’ve seen of its use as a dive computer. Finally, the videography was great!
My daughter and I just got dive certified. We returned from a trip to Tulum Mexico Wednesday this week. We dove Dos Ojos Cenote. This was our first dive after getting certified in a lake in Texas. Cenote diving is absolutely life changing. Check it out and plan a trip to dive a Cenote in Mexico.
I would have to say this is the most technically advanced video I have seen you do yet. Great photography. I recommend you dive some wrecks at the bottom of the ocean. Perhaps go treasure hunting. Do an identification of what the item you found is, its history. Are you worried about sharks though? I suppose if you stay near the bottom the shark wouldn't attack you?
Well done for getting into the water and cold water. I’ve done a handful of dives, but mostly breath hold, and Catalina. I love that area, one of my favorite on the planet, believe it or not.
Interessting video. I defnitly watched it with a loot of skepticism especially since I have been diving for quite a long time now. The one biggest downside for me it that the apple watch only wrks up to 40m wich is kind of a joke especially if just saying deeper than 40m after words. I would still really like to try one out end especially see how long it would last in the diving I do compared to some of the more rugged more diving tested units I have. Will be Diving in the Baltic Sea for the next 3 months straightened I do know the stuff I have will last. as a watch still computer that I use as a backup I actually have a Garmin Descent and even that one looks quite beaten after about 1,5 years
Pretty cool. I also started using the watch as a secondary dive computer but is working so good that now I use it as primary and my Suunto as secondary
I am currently watching your video on my lunch time in the office! Ahhh, that is what I have been waiting for. Thanks, for your content, they truly help and support my mental health so much. I am a Technician hehe.
I just started swimming. 🚫No🚫 plans for diving ever but becoming a super strong pool and open water swimmer is my goal. I learned how to swim in 2 days and now I’m doing drilling to get faster. Love💕 my Apple Watch for being my swim buddy. Thanks for the inspiration to get in the water.
I use the Apple Watch Ultra with the Oceanic app as the back up to my back up dive computer. I've generally been happy with the app (can't beat the price!), but the safety stop alert is incredibly annoying. When you rise to a level of 19 feet, it starts vibrating and it won't stop until you push the action button. Then if you drop down to 20 feet it turns off. If you return to 19 feet it starts alerting again, requiring another button push. So if you just happened to be at around a 20 foot depth, maybe on top of the reef after a dive and you're taking some pictures of fish, not even trying to do your safety stop yet, it just keeps going off. Drives me nuts.
Nice effort beating your fear of water , and braving 53 degrees water too , truly you are my hero😅 , I can't stand cold. But the skin diving does like a lot of fun , could this be an ongoing hobby for Ijustine ??? All the best and stay safe !
Definitely one of my favourite videos that you have done as seeing the dive function in action is awesome and the fact that it can be used for snorkelling is great. If you can do another video in future in another tropical setting with real clear waters that would be super! Great work iJustine 👌
So glad you experienced the joy of diving. Some safety pointers, the iphone watches have NO rating, Their own website states: - IP6x (so no submersion testing) - to only use it if accompanied by a secondary computer / gauge, watch. unless accompanied by a individual test report / dive graph that the manufacturer used to check/ calibrate, i am very sceptical. I am just like Justine, wearing my Ultra with my yellow ocean band except I am sitting in my office at my desk. LOL. I do want to try diving in it though.
When I was a young kid of 13 in the 80s I got certified with my dad and we used to hit the Channel Islands all the time. You should check out the other ones. San Clemente and Anacapa are great. Harbor seals are awesome. Those horn sharks are everywhere. I went on a night dive at San Clemente and I didn’t think about great white sharks until I got down there and then I got really scared because it’s so dark where you aren’t aiming your dive light. The reality of the potential is scary but you have more of a chance of being struck by lightning so it’s extremely unlikely you would ever be attacked. As a kid though the thought freaked me out and I didn’t enjoy it. I saw an electric ray during the dive though.
Thats absolutely the Video im waiting so long. Now i only need an Diving test Video for the Huwei Watch GT3 pro and Huwei Watch Ultimate!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️
You should definitely go lobster catching during the season. We go once a week. Season starts in October and ends in March. Super fun and great eating. We go off the coast around PV.
With an open cell 7mm spearfishing suit you’d be a lot warmer. No zippers, separate top and bottoms will prevent cold water to get into the suit as frequently. It is definitely more flexible. No nylon lining, so the neoprene sticks to your skin. But you need to get it wet with some soapy water or hair conditioner to put it on. I have been in 40F 5 C water with 7mm top and 5 mm pants.
I really wish you would have gone with me in September when the water temp is 75 on the surface and the visibility is 100 feet or more. Those conditions looked horrible.
I was just out there doing my AOW and yeah you can't avoid the sausage feeling in the 7mm. I definitely plan to do my dry suit cert sometime in the future which would be ideal for the colder water.
Look into using open cell spearfishing wetsuits. They fit closer and trap air against your skin and water doesn't wash through the suit. Then you don't need a wetsuit that is as thick. A 5mm open cell spearfishing wetsuit is warmer than a 7mm wetsuit. Also these wetsuits tend to be 2 piece so you end up with two layers over your core but only one over your arms and legs so you keep good freedom of movement.
Congrats on getting certified! Thanks for a good honest review. Great to see the Apple Watch Ultra with the latest Oceanic + App updates and how it performs. Really helpful. Enjoy diving, a whole new world!
It worries me that you were open water certified before you shot this video and one of the first things you mentioned was not knowing about the do not fly time. That should have been stressed even more when you learned at a location you have to fly in and out of. Glad the dive computer tracks it, but it should have been something you were taught in your training for sure. Be safe out there.
Congrats on becoming scuba certified. I have been diving for 21 years and absolutely love it. Some cool creatures to check out would be turtles in Hawaii and sharks in Bahamas.
Coolest part is justine is diving with Apple watch ultra and yesterday me and my sister talking about the same. Also Justine please review the Asus Zenfone 10.
Welcome to the world of diving! You need to come to Egypt and go to Marsa Alam, Sharm Alsheikh and Dahab for some of the best diving spots in the world! You can also level up to Advanced Open Water there 👌🏻 stay safe!
Perfect! I happened to own an Apple Watch ultra and already starting my open water PADI, so this could save me a lot of money as a reliable dive computer hopefully
Well done on facing your fears and getting back in the water it looks like a great place to go diving, will have to check it out if I ever get over there 😊. look forward to seeing your next diving adventure.
Just a couple more months until I jet of for a few refresher dives and explore the underwater museum of the Lanzarote Coast. I had been wondering how good the Ultra was for diving, so thanks for the review
Welcome to the diving family. It is very addictive ;)
And don't worry about the buoyancy. It will come with more dives. :)
Safe Diving!
Thank you I'm so excited!!!
You should go scuba diving lake Tahoe
Congrats for getting certified! You learned how to snowboard and now scuba dive. Love watching you learn new things. Love the gear. Great job overcoming your fear of swimming and water. ❤

Some safety pointers, the iphone watches have NO rating,
Their own website states:
- IP6x (so no submersion testing)
- to only use it if accompanied by a secondary computer / gauge, watch.
unless accompanied by a individual test report / dive graph that the manufacturer used to check/ calibrate, i am very sceptical.
Do we think apple submerges each watch for 72 hours, and does a submergion in a certified pressure chamber to verify the readings of each device & sensors
