  • Here is another video in the Maximum Tools and Jigs series. This time I do my very first “unboxing” video…where I try to validate whether or not the Byrnes Saw is as accurate out of the box as other claim. This is a model building saw that is made by Jim Byrnes from Florida…and is a saw that is widely respected and used by many guitar makers.
    If you enjoy this video…don’t forget to “like” it. Make sure you subscribe (and click on the “bell”) so that you don’t miss out on future videos from Maximum Guitar Works. If there is information that you need…that I didn’t cover in the video…post your questions in the comments section below.
    Guitar making is the most enjoyable and challenging endeavor anyone can undertake. The sky is the limit as far as being able to use your skill and imagination to create beautiful, yet functional, works of art that you can play with pride. I hope these videos provide some encouragement and the motivation needed to get out in the shop and make some wood come alive!

    I bought one of these saws for my father. He used it to consistently cut 1/87th scale 1” thick boards. So he regularly cut boards that were real world dimensions of 1/87” thick. The saw is extremely accurate. And still is after several years of use.

    That noise you heard when turning on the saw to show it's noise level was a bit extra loud because you didn't lock it after changing the blade height. For those watching video it's not that loud under normal circumstances.

    Jim has really upgraded the packaging. I’ve had my Jimsaw for about 13 years now and I wasn’t packaged anything like that. Anyway. 13 years and still works as good as the day I got it. Worth every penny. You can see the toys I build with it on my channel. It is such an awesome tool. I usually have my blade guard off. When working on small parts, I find it more dangerous to try and work around the blade guard. Very odd clicking sound though. That isn’t right. Have you tried taking the blade height locking tool out? It is removable (at least in mine).

    800$ to cut fret slots? I use a crosscut sled and my table saw with the Stewmac or LMII blue and I've never had the slightest problem with inconsistent fret slots. I'm sure that is a great little saw just overkill for guitar building. But to each his own. I have a mini lath that was used by my friend's grandpa to fabricate parts for RC airplanes. That thing was crazy expensive too and it just sits in one of my cabinets in my shop. I'll probably sell it or trade it for something I can use in the guitar shop.

      I think you are off on the price of a Byrnes saw...but you are correct on the "to each his own". I prefer dedicated machines to save conversion time. And this machine take so little space. But like I always say...."If it works for you....then it is good for you".

    Thanks to your video I finally took the plunge and ordered a Byrnes saw. Great video that took away all of my concerns. What finally made me look towards a good saw was the frustration using a 120.00 mini saw from Aliexpress. The hardest cuts to get super accurate are the smaller ones for me. Excellent demo and saw.. I cut my fret slots in a radius pattern same as the fret board so these things are useless for that in my shop but there could be a bunch of other cuts for bridges etc.. it would be awesome for.. little salty price wise but you get what you pay for. Thanks..

    • @maximumguitarworks
      @maximumguitarworks  5 лет назад

      All great points Joe. I sometimes do radiused slots too...I use a CNC for those fret slots. But you are correct...an accurate (and smooth) saw in the shop is always a great thing. And...I also believe that this saw is safer for the tiny stuff too.

    happy new year!!! (i hope...); a simply jaw-dropping machine, pure industrial art. does it have the power to cut exotic hardwoods such as ebony or coca bola? i think if sister janine's miniature dollhouse enterprise is a lucrative business this thing will pay for itself rikkitik. however u didn't mention the price(i am only @ 23.5M) so i'm guessing it's a pricey item. also, is it made in the U.S.? is there a warranty? i've been viewing numerous videos of tabletop's & my eyes & brain are bottoming out w/all the info. still can't find what i need @ a price i want which is depressing but eventually i'm sure i'll find the perfect match. your demo is excellent, spot on & informative. i'm guessing this rig(w/o looking it up) runs about $700, but worth every penny & right out of the box no less. continued success!!!

    • @maximumguitarworks
      @maximumguitarworks  4 года назад

      It is a great machine. I don't do a lot of through cuts with it...since fret slotting is my main purpose. However, no issues with slotting ebony! Like most things...good blades help a lot too.

  • @thesultanmerchant

    any tool is provided to change blade? Can Byrnes saw cut 3/4" thick plywood, 3/4" thick MDF, 3/4" thick chipboard and 1 1/2 " x 3" wood? I saw one more video of Byrnes saw presented very halfheartedly. Need performance of thick wood at least 3/4" thick.

    • @4newdogs
      @4newdogs 3 года назад

      Buy a benchtop saw if you aren't doing precision work. Cheaper and within the specs you need for the plywood you work with. You caught the precision part right? I'm assuming you never checked the Byrnes website or listened to the part of the video that mentioned 15/16" max thickness?

  • @thesultanmerchant
    @thesultanmerchant 5 лет назад

    you flatter too much about Byrnes saw but never perform wood cutting performance. This indicate that it cannot cut thick plywood or wood.

    • @maximumguitarworks
      @maximumguitarworks  5 лет назад +6

      Sultan...thanks for the comment. However, I believe you are missing the point of this saw. It is a model makers saw. The specs on their website says cut capacity of 15/16". I don't care about that...or ever intend to use it for that...as all I need it to cut is maybe 1/4". It's kinda like buying a Prius and trying to haul a ton of rock with it. Not the tool for the job. You would be advised to look elsewhere for your needs.

    • @maximumguitarworks
      @maximumguitarworks  3 года назад +1

      Hours to align most power tools. Larger tools can take me a half a day to get right. Is that not your experience? Even my $1600 Nova drill press took a half day to assemble and get the alignment perfect. Jim’s tools are designed to be perfect...that is an anomaly. Most tools are made in china...the bigger the company the better the quality control...but they all need tweaking. Any that is not modifying the tools...what I normally have to do....it is the setup and alignment instructions right in the owners manuals of nearly all power tools.

    • @maximumguitarworks
      @maximumguitarworks  3 года назад

      I can't really speak on this accessory...as I don't own it. I am curious as to what your concern is? I use this saw 95% for cutting fret slots...using the sliding crosscut table that Jim personally modified for me. The machine does everything I ask...however, it is a small machine build for model building. For small pieces, this machine is so less scary than a traditional table saw...and safer in my opinion. I have used tilting table saws before...it was a machine that helped me build some pretty amazing stuff that was needed around the house in my early marriage and family years. It was a machine that was first invented in the mid 40's...and I bought one around 30 years ago. It is a tool called a Shopsmith. Do I like my 5 HP 12" tilting arbor cabinet saw? Yes I do...but I still own that old Shopsmith (tilting table and all) for some tasks that have unique requirements. Anyway...sorry for rambling. If you are looking to purchase a small saw from luthier or model building...I wouldn't let the tilting table accessory concern you. Jim is way smarter than me...if he is making it...it must be good.
