  • This is a short video offering a review of the new Red Dragon Drednought HEMA gloves.
This is an independent review and not a paid promotion, and offers my initial views of the new Red Dragon HEMA gloves. I'm not affiliated with Red Dragon, and not being paid to create this video. It's purely to offer an initial opinion on the gloves, which offer a very decent option at an entry level price.
My immediate impression of them reminded me of my friend's Pro Gauntlets, but at a fraction of the cost, these seem like an exciting new arrival!
Of note, these are the first generation, and I believe they are taking feedback on these for creating a second generation in the future. They are certainly ab improvement on the old hockey style Red Dragon gloves.

Thanks, I've been very much anticipating this as my Konings are heavy, stiff and I get so little feel from my sword.

Great review, I have not used mine yet but I do have some obersations. Firstly I bought the larger size and intended to use them for metal sabre sparring, the glove is a tight fit in a Kevtun Easton III bowl guard, but much more comfortable in an open 1803 guard. Being able to replace parts is very positive, I suspect the finger plates will be a weak point but the articulation is excellent. I wish the finger tips wrapped over the end of the fingers though. The back plate is a little restrictive on wrist movement but it is very sturdy, so you trade flexibility for protection. The loop for pulling the glove on is genius, I love it.

Honestly i don't understand how you can even consider these gloves for longsword. They doesn't seem nearly as protective as Progaunlet or SG Infinity. The fingers look extremely weak, especially on the sides. They already protrude under the plastic shell and it will be inevitably worse with wear. All those years of R&D for that ....

Well they're not designed for longsword.
      From the product description:
"They provide great protection when sparring with a range of different weaponry including sabre, messer and (controlled) longsword.
Please note: These gloves are not designed or recommended for high intensity longsword sparring or tournaments/competitions."

Them offering replacement parts tell me it's designed to break.

    Nice review!
Have you tried them with single handed weapons and if so, how is the dexterity you get from these compared to thokks? Also, have you tried messer?

I've tried them last week with single handed weapons (mainly sidesword), I don't have thokk but I have superior fencing Hema gloves (thokk rip offs) and the dexterity seemed slightly better than those for me. Definitely up amongst the most dexterity you can get with 5 fingered armoured gloves. So I'd imagine the dexterity is definitely comparable to any thokk. But I personally found the side and insides of the fingers slightly less armoured than superior fencing gloves (thokk).

@@Khepri666would you rather use these red dragon gloves or the supfen gloves for sidesword?

I tried them with a Lixar Rebellum arming sword, and found they were good with that.

@@cloaked.fencer in my personal opinion I think these seemed nicer off the bat, I'd use these. But if I were to enter a tournament setting where the intensity could be higher than sparring or if I did light two handed sword sparring then I'd opt for the superior fencing ones instead as they seem to have the edge in terms of protection (but a tiny loss in dexterity).

thanks for the review! How well is the thumb protected when holding the sword? can the thumb slip out or protude under the cover when gripping? I've had this with other 5 finger gloves and hurt my thumb twice

It doesn't seem to protrude. The glove is well connected to the lames, so shouldn't do unless the connection to the glove fails.

It looks like it's leather on the underside, which already is a big nono for me. I have had issues with the Spes because of this, as the leather wears out and protudes out more and more.
If it doesn't have a thorough cover like SGs or the HFs I will not get them.

    How is the wrist mobility?

It's pretty good. There is decent articulation between the plates.
