Medieval Armoured Knight Fight with brutal ending! Hema harnischfechten poleaxe duel short movie.
This short action armoured Knight fight movie was written and produced by Norwich HEMA Society in an attempt to create a fight scene using authentic historical harnischfechten poleaxe and longsword fighting techniques, including half swording, pommel strikes and grappling.
It was filmed by free sparring, with a few planned moves to give a loose choreographed sequence.
It was inspired by the “Knight of Hope” by Andorea, and "Fiore" by AM productions, and the videos by Dequitem, which have had a big influence on us, and set the bar for how armoured fighting and choreography could and should be depicted.
We wanted to depict the fighting style of the medieval Knight, showing the correct techni...

This was my first session with trying out a dual wield Viking sword and hand axe. It was incredibly intuitive and very effective at hooking a shield ( buckler in this instance) and the axe acted as an excellent blade catcher. As my main focus is on 15th century weapon systems, I have no idea how authentic this type of fighting would be in a Viking battle, but I can certainly see it being a plau...

    Gentlemen I appreciate your effort and work!! Just watched the poleaxe video as well, and it was *EASILY* visible how much more free you felt outdoors instead of the tremendous caution required in this environment. I enjoyed both, and have subscribed and hope to comment on the poleaxe vid for the algorithm soon as I can. When doing choreo, it's ABSURDLY important to drill these things to a ridiculous degree with repetition... but when you're a HEMA student and learning HEMA, it can be confusing and stifling because choreo is literally a dance trying to look like HEMA, whereas HEMA is made to kill and not get killed in the process. That causes a conflict in the performer/student that I guarantee will take time and practice, practice, practice, ....pr--- *is smacked* to overcome. And it WILL take time, but you guys can do it. No matter what, make sure to have fun with your choreo and film making most of all. Since we (usually) don't have to kill anybody with HEMA, a certain degree of fun is going to be part of it for all of us. When you're giving a performance, remember that the fun IS nearly all of it lol. Historical accuracy is a great factor for these sorts of short-films, but never forget the joy of the dance, have fun, and do not be discouraged. I wish you great success and bid you all thanks for your hard work, may the flashing steel reflect the light of the Lord towards your true path. Amen.

  • @jwchampagne1

    Quite different from fighting in armor. My takeaway: a good sword is ALWAYS useful no matter how you're fighting, while the slow heavy, long-handled weapon is only practical when you and your opponent are in armor.

  • @jwchampagne1
    @jwchampagne1 7 дней назад

    I get the feeling that a lot more of such engagements ended because one man became exhausted, or suffered from too many hard bangs on the armor or helmet (bruises, possibly concussions), than decisive sword strokes or swings of the axe. Hopefully you were fighting with friends nearby who could drag you back if you fell down, before the other guy could brain you or stick a dagger in your eye or neck.

    • @AmarothEng
      @AmarothEng 7 дней назад

      From my personal experience in 1300 armored duels, that is very much true. When you try to hack with a sword at someone in full mail armor and greathelm, there is little actual damage you can do. Bruises will be the worst. A very heavy blow could potentialy make a joint break if it's unprotected by plate, but that's not an easy hit to land. Still, my armor weighs 25kg. That is something I can fight in for a decent amount of time. But yes, the exhaustion (and lack of air in closed face helmed, and overheating in any helmet really) does inevitably come and then you need a breather. If you don't get it, bad things happen. Armor moves the center of mass up, so, you usually you get toppled to the ground by someone pushing you when you are either careless or simply too exhausted to resist. In this video, they both got tired still rather quickly. So, the effect of exhaustion is shown very well here, perhaps a bit overblown. Though their armor is likely a bit heavier than mine, so, there's that as well. Not sure about how optimal their movements were in terms of conserving energy, poleaxe is not my thing, I did get feeling they use a bit too much of arms to generate power and not putting their core enough into it at certain clutch moments (each such mistake, even a minor one, costs a LOT of energy in armor), but I may be wrong.

    The duel is presented rather in accordance with historical realities... The approach was that if you fail and are pierced through the body, you try to retaliate with a dagger during grappling... which is what, at 2:00-2:05, the dying knight does, grunting heavily. Also, a typical duelist dying in a fight without armor with a rapier and a dagger tried to take his opponent with him in this way (if he was still able). So the dying duelist often tried to still achieve something with the dagger. And sometimes he obtained his consolation by thrusting the dagger into, for example, the opponent's throat or groin (or, in a duel without armor, by fiercely making a sieve out of the opponent's chest, inflicting a lot of stabs thanks to adrenaline and so called "euphoria moribundi")

      Swords were effective against the vast majority of folk who couldn't afford the hugely expensive full mail armour suits. Most knights carried a variety of weapons, but folk with fewer resources absolutely used bats and clubs to try and knock over knights or break the joints of their armours. Swords were side arms for much of the Middle Ages; spears, axes, and polearms were more common outside of single combat, and bladed weapons were still accurate enough to pierce gaps in armor to the point that it was still effective, while maces would take longer to wear down opponents. It's more complicated than generalizations would make it out to be.

    Honestly i don't understand how you can even consider these gloves for longsword. They doesn't seem nearly as protective as Progaunlet or SG Infinity. The fingers look extremely weak, especially on the sides. They already protrude under the plastic shell and it will be inevitably worse with wear. All those years of R&D for that ....

    Great review, I have not used mine yet but I do have some obersations. Firstly I bought the larger size and intended to use them for metal sabre sparring, the glove is a tight fit in a Kevtun Easton III bowl guard, but much more comfortable in an open 1803 guard. Being able to replace parts is very positive, I suspect the finger plates will be a weak point but the articulation is excellent. I wish the finger tips wrapped over the end of the fingers though. The back plate is a little restrictive on wrist movement but it is very sturdy, so you trade flexibility for protection. The loop for pulling the glove on is genius, I love it.

      I've tried them last week with single handed weapons (mainly sidesword), I don't have thokk but I have superior fencing Hema gloves (thokk rip offs) and the dexterity seemed slightly better than those for me. Definitely up amongst the most dexterity you can get with 5 fingered armoured gloves. So I'd imagine the dexterity is definitely comparable to any thokk. But I personally found the side and insides of the fingers slightly less armoured than superior fencing gloves (thokk).
