I suspect when you refer to 4 wt. Yarn, you are using "pound of love" because it is a lighter no. 4 yarn. A normal no. 4 yarn is a bit thicker, which gives you bigger stitches

You must have an incredibly tight chain because I get 14 inches on 55 chains

Hey girlie, I think you can just use fewer stitches. It won’t make a difference according to the pattern.
