Since i've graduated this year as a Cloud Architecture Engineer (and not after high school, i'm 40) and have some experience in IT i can easily disprove the first argument. Working in the cloud environment isn't about clicking in fancy GUIs - most of the time You'll be working on yaml files or in terraform. Don't even get me started on the challenging aspect and quantity of devops tools. It is ridiculous at this moment, the iceberg of cloud related tools. I think that it is one of the fastest growing field in IT, beside "bestseller" - AI.
I'll try to go into cloud security myself.

Agree and disagree here speaking by experience. I have been working in IT sales at an OEM and partner level with visibility at any scale and can confirm this. Cybersecurity is not going anywhere and people are getting paid to get trained by the larger companies to increase their skills, to get there you need the basics. On the other hand Cloud computing is indeed a very useful skill, but more and more companies are leaving the cloud du to higher costs. I think balance is the key here and every approach is different some people will like cybersecurity and others cloud.

Very small companies perhaps, but for medium to larger companies, hyperscale computing service are growing at a crazy rate. Cloud service also keep getting cheaper rather quickly. You also have to remember companies both large and small, don't simply use only Cloud based services, they will have local office services etc that require local Sec Ops. Lots of IT jobs for all

Just a tip: cyber security is reverse Engineering field
Which means learn how that specific thing work
    See how its been bulid
    Try to break it down
So you build the experience needed
To deliver the handling for that thing in organization's so you land the job easily
In summary to get tricked with wide scope
Choose the small very high demand area and master it

  • @wdbsurfer

What I'd also say is that by learning any technology the modern way, you will, by default, learn how to do it securely. All proper training courses across various technology areas focus on "security by design" and "secure by default". If you aren't learning how to do whatever it is you're learning securely, ditch it and find a different resource.
I always tell people that EVERYONE is n information security person; they just don't know it yet and they may just not be a good one because they're exposing themselves or others.

This sounds like a challenge for any IT jobs people start out with...the individual wants to be an analyst or engineer fresh from college and never apply for a help desk or call center position where they may grow from within....if you work for a bigger company; otherwise you need to job hop. First it was active directory, or systems admin as the hard to get into position years back, now it just shifted since most organizations do not know what to do or how to hire for a security position in the same way they had no idea how to hire qualified systems administrators.

  • @wdbsurfer

The truth is that cyber security as a career is NOT for beginners IMO. A good candidate as a cyber security beginner is someone who has sufficient knowledge and experience with the technologies a cyber security professional will need to secure in the first place. If you start with cyber, you'll either be out of your depth from the get go or you will be a risk to businesses and people. Of course there are rare exceptions, where there are some really astute individuals that can jump right in and learn cyber quickly but the reality is that it's likely not cyber security they're learning but rather the underpinnings of a technology or business process that they'll then learn how to either exploit or protect.
For example, when doing the CISSP exam, sure, you may be able to consume data and pass the exam purely because you have the human equivalent of a machine learning brain but you will not be able to apply the principles contextually without understanding the why, the how or being able to call on intimate knowledge of the thing you're trying to protect. Sure, you can use frameworks but then again, any person that can read can as well.

Turn up to some real people and you will realize that getting a job as cloud engineer is equally difficult now. This field is somewhat mixed with development, companies now need developers who know some concepts of cloud as well. If you talk about really big corporations, then getting a job as cloud or cyber sec is on same level. Basically after COVID-19 its really difficult for any beginner to crack any, I repeat any, IT job.
