What’s behind caste violence in Nepal? | Witness Documentary

- Sona Khatik, a young Nepalese journalist, investigates stories on sexual violence against Dalit girls. As she reports on one girl’s death, she reflects upon her own life.
She knows first-hand how violence is entrenched in the lives of Dalit women. But she is not afraid to challenge those in power, hold them to account and bring about change. And in the fight against discrimination, Khatik sees land ownership as a weapon of change.
“Without land, we’ll always be oppressed by the upper castes. All our struggles are connected to the question of land,” she says defiantly.

In India more than 11 Dalit women are Raped everyday (NCRB) , 80% of the Rapist come from Oppressor (upper) caste, 97% of manual scavengers are from Dalit community, there are caste based brothels in India, in India temple prostitution (Devadasi) is still practiced in which Dalit Adivasi girls are forced into prostitution and sexual servitude by temple priest more than 70,000 Dalit devadasi (NHRC) are abused in Karnataka alone. In Rajasthan Dalit girls are sold into prostitution if there family failed to pay debt (NCW), majority of Dalits don't own land and are forced to work for meager wages on Oppressor (upper) caste farms in which Dalit women are abused by oppressor (upper) caste. More than 59,000 (NCRB) cases of caste based hate crimes are reported in India in 2021, crimes against Indian Dalit Adivasi community are not taken seriously and that's why conviction rate in caste based crimes remain low.

Whole of the cultural landscape of Nepal is defined by Brahminism. As of now, it has gained the hegemonic status in Nepal. Difficult question has to asked now. In fact, they were not the communist leaders they were Brahmins. They are not the democratic socialist they were Brahmins and so on. Nobody knew how localness of Brahminsm as ideology ate up the project of equality . Their caste identity is built on the pillars of Hinduism. Brahminism has to be questioned with utmost fierceness in case of Nepal.
Until or unless Brahminism = Hinduism = Casteism is fought with tactical and argumentative mass movements in Nepal no liberation will ever be achieved.
A true hindu never discriminate in term of cast. I am hindu from Nepal we all are Nepali.

I'm shocked at how Dalit women are treated, but I don't see the human rights, feminists, world powers interfering here, all they talk about is asking women to cover up is oppression 😡. I feel sad for them, especially the woman whose daughter was killed. The upper caste are the lower beings judging by their actions. If the Nepali and Indian government were just, more Dalits should be given access to free education and the educated among them should be put in government offices. Trust me this will stop this senseless acts.
