    I made one of these myself about 10 years ago. You can easily melt modern pennies. Just remember even a fraction of a second in the beam and you will suffer a horrific burn. A family friend walked through the beam even after repeated warnings, and lucky for her the focal point was about the size of a basketball, but even a 1/4 second through the beam caused her pants to SMOKE!

    Focus it on a parabolic mirror to get to a finer point and see if you can weld with it.

      @@thomasknight3599 Possibly, but mirrors reflect a high percentage or heat and certain mirrors are designed to handle this.

    Decades ago , when I was a teenager, my mother had a magnifying glass, a commercially produced item that was available in the 60's, made to prop itself on her chest and allow her to read the small print of a book while she was knitting, or darning socks ( she never sat and did just one thing at a time).
    As kid I would take that magnifying glass and set things on fire.
    One day, I focused it on the entrance hole of a large red ant hill. After a few seconds, red ants began boiling out of the hole and as soon as they were exposed to the focused light, were burned to a crisp. I have often thought of this of an environmentally friendly way to kill out an ant color y without poisoning the environment.
    As a collector of curious junk things, I have a fresnel lens from an old TV that I have carried around for years. I think I will use it to build a death ray for ants.

    In survival situations this would be great if you needed to cook food but can have a fire. You could even heat up rocks for hand warmers. Pretty cool

    If I get around to completing my design, I plan to have MCU controlled solar tracking (of course with the manual sun dial), a drop shade with a sensor to somehow provide a feedback loop to the system and users for controls when able to use, a heat guide shaped like a horn antenna that the horn portion is fixed to the lens and a fixed heater box portion that has a ball joint with the horn portion. I'm thinking this will be the safest design so I can not have to worry about goggles and people looking into the hot spot. Also, the cooking box or surface can be fixed and level during the complete process for ease of managing use. Amazed no one has done this yet. I'm also wondering about using two Fresnel lenses with one side edge together and the lenses at an angle focused to another Fresnel lens like a glass one from a projector or like a Fish-eye lens to possible utilize more lenses for a hotter spot for cloudy days. Seems the glass mirrors also have a potential oven design or even using to reflect more surface area at the Fresnel lens on cloudier days.

    Try to melt rock into lava.
    Death ray supposelly heats to 2000F or 1,100C (about temp of lava)
    Those Rear-projection tv also have about 2 pretty strong capacitors.
    250V 1,000 μF (M) Or Microfarad
    perfect for Tesla coils if you're into it.

      The only part of the tv I still have are the lenses. I will do some experimenting with them someday. Guess I should have pulled the capacitors too!

    Bro i live in Phoenix Arizona, it's 118 degrees outside. I have one of those older large screen protection TV's sitting in my garage that's been there for years. I wasn't sure what to do with it until now.

    I tried to find a mini version of that thing but got a 3d mobile thingy to make screen bigger (about 3 usd)

    Love your videos! The world is a better place with teachers like you. Would taking lenses from varying sized tvs and stacking them create a more powerful and focused beam? Or would the light become too diffused having to go through more screens?

      Thank you for the kind words and thank you for the question, it is a good one!
      If you put multiple lenses together you could do a couple things. First, depending on how far the 'first' lens is from the 'second' lens, you could actually get the pinpoint of light (the focal point) to expand once again and the light on the other side would expand to the same area it covered before (the size of the first lens it entered). The other possibility is that you could get the focal length to shorten (or lengthen, depending on how far the 'second' lens is from the first and both lenses focal length). What that means is that the burger you are trying to cook wouldn't have to be so far away from the first lens.
      If the lens combination were just right and the focused light could be narrowed down to a tiny point, all of the energy would be focused into that one spot and it would be even more hot at that spot than it is in my video. This is because the energy coming in from the sun that is being focused does not change (unless you change the size of the fresnel lens) and therefore the energy (heat) can never become more powerful than it originally was when it hit the first lens.
      So, the better the focal point, the more energy in a localized area but we could never 'increase' the energy with more lenses.

    Have you tried it under the moonlight. I hear there's also a benefit from moon light. Just like how the sun rays effect us in every way from mood to mental clarity and awareness maybe the moon also has a physiological effect that's beneficial to us. We already know the moon balances our circadian rhythm, maybe this frensel lens can magnify that effect somehow. I mean we already light therapy that works on the heating side of light, maybe there's a cooling side to light that's also beneficial. Doesn't hurt to try.

      I recall watching someone cooking with moonlight also, though using a larger parabolic reflector I think that was a combination of troughs. Let me see if I can find.     I feel like that the metal sheet functions as a grill, and the beam functions as the flame. So when the beam comes in direct contact, or too close to the meat, it will leave an over cooked spot on the patty. Still efficient tbh😆

      dakota neumann you are so correct! The beam is so hot it just seared the meat! But, with some planning the searing and internal cooking worked together to make an awesome burger!! Covering the meat with a glass lid seemed to help.

      This is a good question! It takes quite a bit of light energy to get a pinpoint of energy so I am guessing the reflected light off of the moon would not provide enough energy to heat things up. But, I like your thinking! Any other ideas?

      @@BealsScience It could probably make a good moonlight reading lamp. I odnt know how good the optics are, but I imagine, it could also be used as a kind of telescope if we placed a piece of white paper at the correct distance?

      Measuring the BTU is a great idea!
      It is winter here now so it wouldn’t be very effective to test it right now but I will look into it in summer!

      Saunterblugget Hampterfuppinshire it might melt the panel! But there are a lot of new solar arrays that are using mirrors (I made a different video showing that) and fresnel lenses to concentrate the sunlight into one spot. This heats a salt mixture until it is molten and the heat is used to generate electricity!!

    I know I'm a bit late to the party but a very cool vid! I've seen someone do something similar but with many mirrors (whole contraption was about the same size but could focus to a point about the size of a quarter, the guy ended up burning down the shed it was stored in because a door wasn't secured properly and it hit his "death ray." Anyways I thought it would be a cool follow up video if you took that lens and placed it above a smaller one repeating until you got it to as fine a point as possible and maybe use it like a (bansaw I believe it's called) to either cut plywood or make designs with it. I understand that could be dangerous, particularly with children nearby, but it's just something to consider.

      XDfunnyguy this is a great idea! I will edit together the tutorial of how to build the frame and in that video I use the sun to "write" on pieces of wood; kind of like a solar etch a sketch! I also built a parabolic mirror solar cooker and that video should be done before the end of the year! So, more solar fun is on the way!

      Only the projection flat tvs. The new led and lcd tv cannot do this.

      This will only work with the sun. The lens can concentrate a normal light but there would not be enough energy to get it to burn wood.

      I have been filming some experiments with Gallium which, as you may know, has a very low melting point. I wanted to use the Fresnel Lens to try to melt it but the winter has arrived and we've got a bunch of snow. So, I hope to try it at some point but will probably have to wait until spring.

      Get a small Co2 tank, like you get for pellet guns. That might be dangerous but you've got protective gear right? I mean. You put a tornado on a table so. Just a small tank. It's about the size of a thumb or bigger? I'm sure you've seen them. I'd like to see one of those explode. Or an empty Ferbreeze can. I don't know if that's too dangerous but I'd do it. From behind something protective.
