We should make it the law that every presidential candidate get a security clearance before being allowed to put their name on the ballot. I don't see why this isn't already the case. If you want to work in a secure environment, the first thing you have to do is get a security clearance, yet you don't have to get one for the most important job in our entire country.

There may be some constitutional issues with *banning* candidates who fail. It's debatable whether you can tack on extra requirements at a federal level that are *not* written in Constitution. Of course an amendment could fix that. But I think you could do the background check, release the results, and let the public decide whether they'd like to elect a traitor. Throw in mandatory release of tax returns and requiring an independent physical and cognitive exam, and I'm all in :) I still think it would have to be a state by state initiative, though, so call your state legislators. We should make it the law that every presidential candidate get a security clearance before being allowed to put their name on the ballot. I don't see why this isn't already the case. If you want to work in a secure environment, the first thing you have to do is get a security clearance, yet you don't have to get one for the most important job in our entire country.

There may be some constitutional issues with *banning* candidates who fail. It's debatable whether you can tack on extra requirements at a federal level that are *not* written in Constitution. Of course an amendment could fix that.
But I think you could do the background check, release the results, and let the public decide whether they'd like to elect a traitor. Throw in mandatory release of tax returns and requiring an independent physical and cognitive exam, and I'm all in :) I still think it would have to be a state by state initiative, though, so call your state legislators.
