Thank you so much, Matthew! This rather arcane, but ever so beautiful, music strikes chords in my own ancestral memory. It pulls me back to times that i can only imagine now in this crazy world and times. So evocative!
These pieces are beautiful, Matthew. Your technique is superb and allows the music freedom to dance and breathe. As a violinist and pianist, I am beginning to wish I'd taken up guitar. Thank you 🎶
I love these beautiful tunes! [If I'd known about music like this 50+ years ago my life might have been so different, the thing is I can't say that I haven't lived! Too late to learn now at 70!] Wonderful last piece. Thank you!
Glad you like the pieces Ashley, the first one 'Daniel's Tune' is really quite simple and not too hard on the hands, so you never know even at 70 you might be able to get it sounding nice. Best wishes.
You have a wonderful and relaxed guitar technique, which comes through in your tone and the way the music evolves; such joy to watch and to listen to :)
Sean Shibe played some Scottish lute music last night here in Oxford, they were great to hear. Currently listening to your lovely playing of more such pieces over my breakfast tea, you are sending me off to work in a jolly mood.
Very sweetly done Matthew. I noticed the first piece is a concordance with one of the untitled pieces in the Jane Pickeringe Lute book, which I had already thought sounded Scottish, as does another untitled piece and one called "Drawe neare and lowe me." They are very simple settings and for renaissance tuning.
Beautiful playing! Your technique is very fluid and natural to watch. Applied so thoughtfully, your polished skills reveal the beautiful musical moments in these little pieces. I am always heartened to hear interpretive work that dutifully honors the rhythmic structure of the music, deftly and tastefully embellished. Tally one more subscriber.
Thanks for the transcriptions, I've enjoyed them immensely and going to perform them shortly. Going to have my daughters violin teacher attempt to arrange them for a violin accompaniment. thanks again!!!
Nice job! You must have accomplished one of the goals I set out to do twenty years ago when I started music school and fell by the wayside, have a whole big library in your house filled with music manuscripts to play with. lol I had 120 binders at one time, I started getting flustered so I’ve weeded it down to 90, but I’m still trying to figure out what o don’t want. lol smh( just feeling a little narcissistic today)
Hi, in the first tune, just noticed your playing rob mackillops 3rd part that’s not in the original manuscript. Why’s he not credited on the score your selling? Did you learn it from his book? Other than a few ornaments, it’s exactly the same
Rob is aware and has been credited for those measures, we have chatted about it publicly on the Internet a few times. I learned that first piece by ear from a video Rob made in a setting named after his daughter. I wrote down roughly how I play the 4 tunes here, after this video was made and incorporated those measures into the way I play it, I named it after my Dad after he passed away. Rob is the fount of knowledge with all this repertoire and I have great respect for him and his music making.
Hello Wonderful playing ,on your PDF is that the notation for these Pieces. And could I ask what guitar your playing is it spruce.Hope to see you live one day. Thanks Marc
HI Marc, yes the PDF here barosrecords.com/product/scottish-lute-pieces is for these pieces. The guitar is a Spruce top Michael Ritchie. A great Scottish luthier. :-)
Slow practice, steady and sure movements, it is good to be completely sure of your right hand fingering and practice is separately from the left. Often right hand fingering is an after thought by guitar students, be clear about the choices of fingers you want on every note and run through that on it's own before adding the left hand. A Scottsman playing Scottish music on a Scottish guitar! It won't get more Scottish than that! Fantastic!
Thank you Thiabault!
Matthew, Scotland's early music doesn't get played nearly enough. So thank you for playing it so fantastically well. Magical pieces!!!
A pleasure. :-)
Thank you so much, Matthew! This rather arcane, but ever so beautiful, music strikes chords in my own ancestral memory. It pulls me back to times that i can only imagine now in this crazy world and times. So evocative!

Beautiful performance. I watch this video every day -- very inspiring!
Matthew could I ask what strings you prefer for classical/nylon guitar?..

It seems that your RH finger look so calm n relax... Any tips on how do you do that?
