  • I recently bought a new Nespresso Vertuo Next coffee machine and in this video I compare both it and the Vertuo system in general with the Nespresso Original system. The result might surprise you.

I saw you pour water in your mug what was going on? Is that how you make a regular cup of coffee?

Hi Marcia, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Let me start by saying that there are two things about this video that really surprise me.
      1) How popular it is, especially compared to some of my other videos
      2) How often I get asked why I put water in my coffee.
In answer to your question, yes this is how I make a regular coffee and it's called either an Americano or an American. Here's the Wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caff%C3%A8_americano
In my adult life I've travelled to over 70 countries and many cities within and there's only two locations where I had to explain what an Americano was. The first, surprisingly, was in Milan, Italy and the second was in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Everywhere else, without fail, I was able to be served an Americano without any trouble.
Here in the UK it is the 2nd most popular style of coffee, with a 22% share of the market, being beaten (only just) by the Flat White at 22.3% (learn.bluecoffeebox.com/the-uks-most-popular-coffees/) so it's exceedingly normal to take coffee this way. By contrast, an espresso, as would be natively supplied by a Nespresso machine has only 5.4% of the market. Or to put it another way, 300% more people drink Americano than Espresso, in the UK at least.
Hopefully that helps give you the context for why you saw me make a coffee that way but I would like to end with a question if I may. What country are you from because presumably it's not somewhere I could get an Americano?

Thanks so much. I’ve been trying to decide which coffee maker. (I am American and don’t like super strong coffee either) I’ve been doing French press but had a cup of Starbucks the other day and realize that my coffee is sad. I think I’ll just get the old fashioned Nespresso to save money.

I got both, Original are better it uses pressure system… Coffee Taste better more of espresso like. Unlike Vertuo it uses centrifugal, (spinning technique) where it can be compare to brewed coffee taste.
It really depends on your preference with coffee. Do you like strong Espresso taste go for Original, or do you like drip, brewed coffee like or Keurig taste then pick Vertuo.

Excellent video and easy to understand the difference between the two machines with your side by side explanation. Thank you for taking the time to do the video. Wish I had seen this video prior to my ordering my Vertuo Next, as I would have bought the original instead. Since I just received the Vertuo, I will see how it works out. If all does not go well, I will return for the CitIZ original line. I like the fact that those original pods are less expensive and 3rd party capsules can be purchased to save some money. Bit of a coffee snob, as I enjoy a nice dark good roasted cup of coffee. Tired of doing Aeropress each morning (tried French Press, Hario pour overs and drip machine) so I am trying the “pod” system for the first time. Not sure this will be my “cup of tea”, but time will tell!

I had a vertuo that had been problematic since day one and after almost 2 years it finally became un-problematic, as I threw it away and buy fresh beans, grind them and make regular coffee.
Now, that being said, I did like your video and may consider the original machine but as of this writing am leaning toward an espresso machine, full size.
Thank for the video. I am aware it is over a year old but still very relevant.

Cheers Mike for taking the time to comment. I am glad I stepped away from my Vertuo machine and reverted to my Original machine. That said I used to have a Jura F7 bean-to-cup machine and it made great coffee but it was expensive and needed a lot of maintenance so Nespresso is the best compromise for me right now.

I love my Pixie original. Had one since 2016 and always been very satisfied with the coffee it makes. It’s the closest to the real thing that I have found. Also if someone wants an “americano” I just run the pod twice; kind of like you topping up with hot water. I’ve never tried the Vertuo and thankfully seeing your review I won’t be getting one anyway. I never liked the big bulky look and thanks to your review I don’t want to be controlled by a barcode either. I noticed the smaller range of coffee also.

We have just bought our second Vertuo machine but both are the Plus models and not the next. One now for the caravan and one for the house. The main reason we chose the Next version is the opening and closing system, The motorised version of the Next is by far superior. As far as our coffee experience goes, we have had 4 "Original" machines so have had plenty of experience with them. As we both have milk in our coffees, My wife prefers the Cappuccino style and I prefer the flat white we found the depth of flavour 1 capsule compared to 1 capsule if far better in the Vertuo. I ended up using two capsules in the "Original" machine to get the same robust flavour in one of the Vertuo ones. The amount of water is adjustable in the Vertuo machines. You simply continue to hold the start button down until the right amount for you is extracted and let go. The machine from then on remembers that setting every time it reads that bar code. It can be adjusted again up or down in quantity depending on your liking. It only adjusts that capsule and all the others stay as they are set at the factory until and if you change the quantity. The crema really doesn't come into play that much if you use milk. The mouth feel of the coffee to us feels a bit more rich and creamy from the Veruo but that would be subtle at best.

great no-nonsense review. I love my nespresso essenza mini and always buy Lungo size capsules (not espresso size) and often use two for a larger cup. It's still cheaper than buying coffee out. Sometimes I push the button twice on a capsule to get a larger, weaker brew. Just depends on what I'm in the mood for. I considered getting the vertuo system but now will not consider it as I like to be able to modify the water amount.

Great to hear that you like the Citiz machine that you tried. I wouldn't be concerned about them not selling the pods going forward though - there's a massive installed user base of machines that take original capsules and the aftermarket will continue to serve it for years to come.

Your review was very insightful. My 7 year old original machine started acting badly. It was replaced with the Pixie Original machine. I did not care for the machine. The Pixie water reservoir & pod bin are smaller, thus more frequent upkeep. I found a lot of expresso collecting in the used pod bin. The expresso seemed very inconsistent so Nespresso sent me The Virtu plus machine. Yes the Virtu pods are more expensive but, for the most part i drink double espresso. Using one Virtu double espresso pod is 30c cheaper than two Original pods. I am looking forward to testing and learning more about my new machine.

I had a smaller machine before and the lack of water capacity was a nuisance for sure. Vertuo machines definitely seem to work well for those who take their coffee stronger because, as you've said, you only need one pod vs the Original. Good luck with it and I hope it gives you years of solid service.

Sitho. As long as expresso is concerned there is no difference between both systems excepte Vertuo pods are more expensive. But a Vertuo machine will make a better extra long coffee. If you like expresso the original should be your choice, if you like long coffee look at the Vertuo.

Great comparison. I am stuck as to which way to go. I drink 1 Iced Latte per day, if I had to brew a double espresso I would need to use 2 original line capsules. With the Vertuo I could just use a double espresso capsule, thus saving money. I understand the espresso is nicer out of the original line machines.

Hi, thanks for watching the video and taking time to comment. In your scenario the Vertuo should save you a little money and if you are happy to have the foam as part of your Iced Latte then all is good. The best thing to do would be to try a coffee from both machines and see which one you prefer - if the Original is more "you" then it might be worth paying a little more. Good luck!

I have just purchased a nesspresso original pod compatible machine. It uses any of the compatible pods, including the XL ones L’or make and it makes decent coffee. I previously had a tassimo and it was nowhere near as economical to run. We have a bean to cup, so that is for making more fancy stuff, the nesspresso is to get a quick cup during the day and I’m loving the taste, variety (a bag of beans is hard to change mid bag, capsules are whatever you have in your hand) and you can get variations because the machine doesn’t over think the process. Tassimo was hard to get cheap pods for and the coffee was lacklustre most of the time.

We were using a Jura D6 for the last 2 years but my wife and I usually only have 1 coffee in the morning each and sometimes a second later on.
For that, the Jura is actually pretty expensive to maintain, the filters, milk pipe, cleaning and descaling tablets, etc add up to almost be the same price as the pods but with a lot more busy work vs just 1 button on Nespresso.
We got a new Vertuo Next to replace the Jura last week and the coffee is incredibly bitter and rather gross (especially the fake crema). Upon trying to stop a pod after only a few seconds, it tastes pretty good! Because of this I'm thinking of just going with an Original Line since espresso will allow for a stronger taste and adding milk to cut down on some of the bitterness or acidity depending on the pod. Then we're paying quite a bit less for pods which adds up over time.
I'm wondering how to decide between machine? They show the Inissia, Citiz Platinum, Pixie, and Essenza Mini, it says all are practically the same except that the Citiz Plantinum D is "new" and can make more sizes of coffee.
    Thanks!

    • @MostlyHelpful
      @MostlyHelpful  9 месяцев назад

I used to own a Jura (am F7 I think) and they are great machines but as you say, expensive and require some maintenance.
Regarding the machines I used to have an Essenza Mini before upgrading to the Citiz. The Essenza Mini, the Pixie and the Inissia are all small machines and while the coffee they make (in my experience) is the same they hold less water and the used capsule bin is smaller.
For us it's usually 5-6 coffees a day and I found I was always having to empty the bin and fill the water on the Essenza Mini so I'd say go for the Citiz Platinum. Good luck!

Thanks for the review. I have a 15 year old Nespresso Essenza (original line) that still fits the bill when I want a short of espresso. My daughter has a Vertuo machine and I just don’t find the coffee appealing. It is only marginally better than a K-Cup which is the prevalent capsule format here in the US. If you want a nice large cup of great coffee then you shouldn’t be using a Vertuo. Buy some quality beans, get a burr grinder, grind before you brew, brew in an SCA approved coffee brewer like the Bonavita Connoisseur (consistent optimal 12:33 temperature, consistent time) and enjoy. You can’t come close even if your Vertuo spins the capsule at 1000 RPM.

The only reason they made the virtuo was because the patent expired on the old one. Nespresso has been a money machine for them, but not due to the machines. You can get those below cost price in their promos. They make all their money on capsules. After the patent expired on the old model, this cash flow is drying out. Therefore they had to come up with the new system.
For that reason alone, I would never switch over. I like the convinience and cost saving (and also quality improvement) from having a free market for my capsules.

I've been using the Vertuoline Nespresso for a month now, and trying all kinds of coffee recipes with it. From lattes, to afgagatos with ice cream, to milkshakes. 😊
But I think I'm the exact opposite of you. I can't get enough foam on my coffees. LOL. I LOVE all the foam the Vertua machines make AND then I usually add a lot of frothed milk on top.
I adore my Vertuoline. But have not yet tried the Original line. Although I am about to try the Original capsules for the first time the day after tomorrow. Pretty exciting for me.
I got the Wacaco Nanopresso with the NS (NS = Nespresso) adapter. It's a little manual machine that uses the Original Nespresso pods and is small and completely portable. I ordered one for work so I can have my Nespresso there. They say it makes good coffee too. But the last part of it is arriving tomorrow.
So the day after I get to try my first Original capsules. Plus I got a free sleeve as a gift.
I don't honestly imagine for me though that the Original capsules will be as wonderful for me as the Vertuo ones,. Even if I had the full size machine for them. I really love being able to make a wide variety of types of coffee, in a good variety of sizes. And the amount of foam is perfect for me. (once I add even more on top).😊
But there are also different flavours in both lines, so having both let's me try out more flavours. I kind of like having both, for that reason
I don't personally worry about the size of the capsules. As here in Canada Nespresso has a vigourous recycling programme. It's easy and free to sent the used capsules back to Nespresso and they recycle them all and reuse them again. All of mine will be going back.
They say thealuminum pods are infinitely recyclable and there is no point where aluminum becomes no longer recyclable. Plus all the bags....and what you need to send it back is all free.

I bought a Nespresso Vertuo Pop from Amazon and just didn't like the head that is delivered on the coffee and the fact that the pods are not easy to come by. Luckily, the machine was faulty and was returned. The same as you, I prefer an Americano style and added extra water. After watching your vid, I'm sure the original is the machine for me. Cheers.

Thanks, that's great to hear. Interesting that your experience is similar to mine in that the machine I had prior to Nespresso was a Illy machine and like the Lavazza, it didn't last long before it started leaking water. I've had my Original machine now for 2.5 years and so far no problems at all.

Usually I eject my capsule on my OL machines as it makes them stop dripping, but I've noticed that when I do it on that specific OL machine in the video, the following coffee will be preceeded by about one second of pure water flow. so it only likes to go from capsule to capsule, never eject leaving the loader empty. don't know if you had a similar experience.

I've certainly had it where it initially flows water, but I hadn't correlated it with the capsule having been ejected (or not) so I'll keep an eye out. Seems odd though, certainly.

In the original machine can you use capsule from a different brand? For example a starbucks capsule?

    • @MostlyHelpful
      @MostlyHelpful  Год назад +1

Yes you can. I was using Starbucks capsules last week (although they aren't that nice IMHO) and this week I am using capsules from Caffe Nero which are my preferred aftermarket choice. Both are aluminium so can be recycled via Nespresso as normal.

Certainly no regrets from me for choosing the Citiz. I use it everyday and it just works.

Hi thanks for the good reviews.
I brought the Nespresso Vertue Plus.
    £89.00 pounds with free 50 Capsules.👍
I know everyone complaining about the price per capsule. But you must look at the way how much your saving.
I only drink to latte a day. So basically £1.04. for 2 Latte.
    Starbucks or Costa £8.00 .
    It's a Win Win☺️👍

Hi Stevo, thanks for taking the time to comment. I got a similar deal on my Vertuo machine but it is an unescapable fact that Vertuo capsules are more expensive than Original ones once you've used your free capsules. But yes, either option is much cheaper that buying those same drinks from one of the high street outlets.

i have a Citiz and now also a old vertuo flatop for a week. Its fun to use. You can also program how big you want your coffee. i don't know why ppl say you can't with the vertuo machines. However i don't find the coffee better. Infact the original capsules are better & less expensive. Only tried 15 vertuo flavours so i yet have to find "the one".

Thanks and I appreciate the comment. In the video I mentioned that cup size wasn't variable because I hadn't read the instructions all the way through. It's not referenced anywhere on the packaging and it's relatively far back in the user guide (Page 74 of 81 pages in the case of the Vertuo Next) so I suspect most people, me included, will assume it can't be done, especially since the capsules are "sized" to the type of coffee.
