  • In this video I'll show you how to use fold over elastic as a beautiful finish on your handmade garments. I really love using fold over elastic on delicate and sheer fabrics, as well as tighter fitting knits.

So, is this elastic just for binding an edge, not for actual stretch like a regular elastic? Some of the underwear patterns I've come across have called for fold over elastic on the leg holes. I'm a substantial woman. Would this not be good to use for panties leg holes? Thank you for making this video. I really appreciate it. This is the 3rd one I've watched.

I'm so glad you found the video helpful! To answer your question, fold over elastic is just as stretchy as regular elastic and works well for finishing stretch fabrics. However it isn't quite as firm as regular elastic. So for leg holes on panties, fold over elastic would work really well! The only thing would be if you like a more firm hold, regular elastic would hold you in better.

My question why not stretch it and when you do the neck line do you stretch it then. I’m trying to learn as am a newbie. Thank you

Hi! I don't stretch it - I hold it so that it's taut, but not stretched. If you stretch it, it will gather up the fabric around the area you are applying the elastic to. This would be alright for a bodysuit/sports bra/etc, because when you wear it you will stretch the elastic back out, but if the thing you're sewing is not tight fitting then the elastic won't lay flat if you've stretched it while sewing. I hope that makes sense!

I was wondering what size the elastic you're using is?

The elastic I use is 1/2 inch (when unfolded). Hope this helps!
