      Would this work on a bmw k75 3 cylinder. Its already an efi but id prefer to have tunable ecu with more fine tuning. And ad a better air flow meter and a couple of other things that need improvement

      Nah you can just draw up your part design in CAD and send it in xometry to have it machined. Or you can take your drawings to a local machinist to get a quote.

      A one-cylinder version? 125 to 250 cc four stroke?

      Well realistically most older bikes share common dimmensions with the fi counter parts, with some careful planning you can make it easily work. Most conversions start with first understanding all sensors, mechanics, and have a rudimentary understanding of how an engine takes inputs and sends outputs

    With my "engineer" and "safety officer's" hats on, several safety points if you are doing a DIY pressure test on something you have built:
    1. Don't test with air or gas. A failure can result in an explosion. Use water or hydraulic oil.
    2. It is usual to test at 50% above normal working pressure.
    3. Don't forget your eye protection.

    In case others here are interested. The earlier Triumph T595 and 955i have a Magnetti Marelli EFI system that is extremely simple and can be tuned with free-software. It is alpha-n and it works well on a variety of applications. I even have 2 of them running on a 6 cyl Porsche.

    When the Arduino came out I wondered if it could be used for ignition and injection system as I knew Suzuki used 8 bit on early ignition systems. Nice to see the 'Speeduino' is out as open source, I'm going to have to look much further into it

      All the early OEM EFI systems used 8 bit controllers. The first Megasquirt system which was out in 2001 used an 8 bit micro, as did the VEMS system that followed it.

      @@ferrumignis Interesting. I specifically mentioned Suzuki though because I worked on them and taught F.A.S.T. so I'm much more familiar with Suzuki systems.
      I had various information by Bowling and Grippo when Megasquirt came out and was completely DIY but lost it somewhere over the last 20 years

    Thank you for the video. I want to install a gl1500 into a car for nice sound and the size being good for a tiny 4 cylinder engine bay. I wanted to make it a twin turbo but I was told it needed to be converted to efi. I have no mechanical knowledge so seeing what you used will atleast give me a place to start. Very detailed. Thanks

    Gsxr600 throttle bodies from the early 2000s are nice and easy to respace. I used the outer 2 on my XS650, with ford IAC, dubshop modified gm temp sensor, ls coils, and 2" 36-1 wheel on the cam with a microsquirt. Dead times took some playing around, but the stock gsxr injectors are 220cc. The gsxr ITBs fit perfect in the BS34 carb boots from an 80s XS.

      @@cannaroe1213 at that price level megasquirt is a similar solution with a much more developed user base. if you want a car with efi to just go fast id go megasquirt/microsquirt as minimum viable. if you want to develop efi system themselves as a hobby then go speeduino. lots of choices out there just gotta decide what you really need. no use paying for a box full of drivers or features you wont use. i picked up a MaxxECU mini for a recent project. seems pretty decent, very compact. good 4 cylinder box for around same price as a microsquirt..but with 2 more injector drivers which is nice.

    I can't wait to see more of this! I have an XJ750 that I have been contemplating changing over to fuel injection (since the carbs it came with are so incredibly temperamental and I can't get them tuned right for the life of me) Really love that you are putting the time into showing this all in such detail and love that you are bringing more life to these old bikes!

    Little tip, the XS850 triple got an oil cooler and you can retro fit it although given the amount of work you’ve put into this project I’m not sure knocking up an external oil cooler for the 750 will cause you to break a sweat!! Lovely to see the XS750 as the base for a major project. 👍

    I made the same style of sensor for a "TDC" signal , on a V12 and drove it off the end of the cam with a spacer and an alloy cutter wheel..
    I used a Crane optical sensor as they are designed to live in an automotive distributor , that was 20 years ago and it's still running happily...👍🏻😉👌🏼

      I looked into several of the actual automotive sensors, sadly the ones I found were too big to fit inside my crankcase cover.

      @@bombshellbikes1559 the Crane XR700 SENSOR is the smallest I could find.. It's only about 8 or 10mm high , and the base has two small mounting tabs with holes..

    I love how much the speeduino has opened up modding like this, made it way more affordable if you fuck up too.
    I want to build one and learn how to tune, but I need a platform to test it on. Something small but preferably with 4 wheels so I can tune on the road.

    you could also use a normal automotive stud wit 2 different threads, the finer thread will come out more slowly so you put that one in first and then screw it in with the more aggressive thread and it will get tight.
    then you don't need a left hand thread, though I guess you have the tap now so why not use it. 😆

      That said, you happen to have any TB recommendations for an old 83 GSX 750? I've given up trying to find carbs, already have a wideband anyway. FIgure I"ll probably dump an old liter motor in there, and if i'm going through that trouble, might as well be injected.

    Definitely like what you're doing that vintage motorcycle I have a 50cc scooter that I upgraded the cylinder on in that and would like to put it to fuel injection instead of dealing with a carburetor to maximize my Powers torque and speed

      A properly set carburetor will make more power than EFI. If you cant fix a single carb engine, go back in the house and watch t.v.

    This is very interesting for me, I have a Yamaha XS850, with a set of 900 pistons to be machined, already have Triumph carbs for it, and was looking at Speeduino to see if I wanted to use that for ignition, as it might help when tuning. I guess the full EFI is almost as easy. Think the Triumph 850s and 900s had same carb spacing, so thought the throttle bodies would be the same...
    Anyway great content and good to know these older bikes are not forgotten.. 🙂

    Far as your reluctor wheel for the sensor you could take the body the board of the sensor and create a casting and submerge it in epoxy with your harness already on it and that will reflect the heat from transferring to it

    I never got to finish repairing the XS750 that was the first bike I ever had.
    I had ideas and aspiration, but never got to do anything with it.
    Many years further down the line, I've had a couple of sport bikes, and sold them as well.
    Now to find another bike project, something cruiser or touring oriented this time!

    DB style connectors can be purchased with SEPARATE pins and sockets. Crimp the pin/socket to the wire and then insert into the shell. I have made 100s of RS332 cables this way. Admittedly, they were not subject to high vibration but the correct hardware keeps the shells together and there is sufficient friction between the gold flashed pins and sockets.

    You will need a large volume plenum between the compressor outlet and the throttle bodies for a three cylinder engine. This is to reduce the pulsations in the inlet tract. This is not required for four cylinders or more.

    I have my fathers old motorcycles. One is a carb Valkyrie that was favorite touring. The maintenance on this thing due to the ethanol gas mixtures is just brutal. None of that Stabil stuff seems to work. First two times carbs needed to be rebuilt I paid Honda. Last two I did it. The final form is I just disassembled fuel system and left it off. The plan was I would just put it back together when I would ride. An extreme winter storage setup. Except I still have put it back together for two years.

    I'm busy stripping my 1994 Honda Transalp 600 for a restore and rebuild. I am contemplating getting the power jet & needle set for the carbs, but if an EFI modification is now doable without too much hassle (which is why it always has been dis-advised by engine experts), I'd really want to give that a try.

    Love what you're doing, love the DIY speeduino and the improved connectors. I even love where/how you're mounting that turbo! Would be interesting to see if you could make a cooler to sit between the turbo and intake and do a with/without tune to see what changes. I'd also love to hear how these bikes feel after the EFI swap, like if their mountain performance is considerably better, etc.

    Hey man, cool build! If you wanted to easily add an oil cooler, you could install a stock one from a '80-'81 XS850. It will fit right on. The only difference from the XS750, is that it has a collar that goes in-between the engine and the oil filter. This collar let's you attach the oil cooler.

    ooh....Reeeeeallllly been wanting to add EFI to my 1994 Ducati 900. I can source throttle bodies from the same engine in later years so this might be "relatively easy". I hadn't checked lately on ECU availability for DIY EFI....love it!

    Yeah dude… You’re doing some amazing stuff good job. There is a lot of good information in just this video. There is other information out there of people converting carbureted bikes to EFI, Not as much as there is for cars obviously. But for some reason there’s a lot of naysayers out there that are either saying it’s impossible or not cost-effective. From now on I’m just gonna direct them to this video… LOL... i’m looking into doing an EFI conversion on my bike, It’s a 2000 YZF 600 R, Also known overseas as the Thundercat. I personally am not a fan of the CVK Keihin carbs that come on it. I know that 04 R6 throttle body’s will pretty much bolt right on. Biggest piece of this puzzle due to cost seems to be the ECU, Speeduino looks to be the best and most cost effective solution. I do have a couple questions that of all people you may be able to answer. I know I can make and attach a trigger wheel to back of the fly wheel, I’ve seen someone else do this and he has a working design that utilizing the puller holes to mount the trigger wheel. A Hall effect sensor (Cherry - GS100502) is drilled and mounted above the trigger wheel through block. You had mentioned magnet, I just want to confirm the magnet is in the sensor correct? Lastly, I would preferred not to do batch fire but I’m concerned about having the tools and skills necessary to get a cam signal. I have heard that some manufacturers don’t use a cam Sensor specifically to help the ECU determine the compression stroke from exhaust stroke, Instead they use an intake pressure sensor and program the ECU to count the degrees between the pressure change. Is this a feasible option?

      With a hall effect sensor, the trigger wheel will need to have magnets attached. A variable reluctance (VR) sensor just measures the change in proximity to a metal object which is why they're more popular. The only downside to VR sensors is that they require some signal conditioning to be read by speeduino. As far as I know there is no option for speeduino to run sequential injection without a cam signal.

      Hey, sorry for so much back-and-forth, I talk to that guy and he said it’s considered a Halleiffect but for some reason it does not need magnets on the trigger. But it does require a pull up resistor wired in between the signal wire and I want to say power. The sensor a Cherry -part# GS100502 it looked it up and it is called a hall eiffect sensor, plus this guy does have a running model. I’m not sure if it’s Road tested but he does have signal and tachometer is registering RPM in tuner studio. I know you’re a busy guy so it’s cool no big, But If you have a chance do you think you could look up the part number and give me your opinion? Maybe it’s just a glorified VR...

      There are Hall effects that can read steel “teeth” alone with no magnets. I saw on robot cantinas video about fuel injecting the harbor freight predator engine in the little Honda car (it’s a RUclips channel called robot cantina) that he ran into this problem of Hall effect needing magnets on the flywheel and it got me thinking. On second gen hayabusa engines they use a Hall effect sensor (3 wire) for the cam position sensor (the gen ones used variable reluctor 2 wire standard type). The “tooth” on the camshaft these sensors “see” is just a little 6mm hardened steel pin. It’s not magnetic at all. So I know there are specialized Hall effect sensors made for automotive and motorcycle world that must have the magnet built into the sensor body and not require detecting a magnetic “tooth” swinging by! I’ve seen many similar sensors on many modern cars/bikes I’ve worked on at day job. They way I tell var reluctor from Hall effect easy is 2 wire is vr and 3 is hall sensor. If I’m not mistaken, hall is much more reliable signal as it generates a good square wave on/off even with slow cranking revolutions versus a vr sensor which gains signal strength with rpm

    1) what did you select as your new piston ring gap?
    2) did you make sure to set your induction plumbing to at least 2x the displacement of your engine?
    3) maybe consider a water 2 air cooler, they are more compact than air 2 air coolers.
    4) does your ECU have provision for a thermocouple for a pyrometer?
    5) the ATMEGA2560 has additional serial ports, so you can wire your BT adapter to that.

    I have three motorcycles and I'm super frustrated I had a mechanic that claimed he could fix the carburetors on my bikes and he can't seem to get them tuned. I'm at the end of my patience and I am desperately wanting to go over to an EFI system. I work in EMS and I'm getting super depressed I don't have the ability to ride with motorcycles anymore. I work with some electronics and I have skills with soldering but I've never combined engine mechanics with electronics. I'm at the stage where I want to purchase a speedrino kit preferably preassembled. And then figure out how to get everything to work. If you can drop me a message to help me out that would be great. Because I have no idea exactly what I need as long as I can get one of my motorcycles running and eliminate the carburetors then I will be happy.

    Have you thought about using an Rasp-Pi instead of or with the Arduino?
    I've been playing around with the idea of bringing my 1976 Squarebody into the 21st century. But leaving the carb with a modified AFR system made from an IAS and O2 wide-band . Leave the factory HEI-4 ICM distributor. Swap the HEI-4 ICM for a HEI-8 ICM to add ECU timing and dwell control. Add a MAP, CPS, TPS, AIR/Water/Oil TEMP, and LCD touch screen for gauges.
    So to run the screen hence the R-Pi.
    The R-Pi would add on the fly dash programing abilities, gauges, internet (with phone pairing), the ability to have a 2T hard drive for continuous sensor logging, audio pre-amp output, RTC, hands free phone and all hardwired instead of BT to phone. Except for the internet thingy.
    I could probably find other nifty things the R-Pi would be good for like dual cameras for those pesky legal issues and theft monitoring.
    Between the AFR system to make the carb a dynamic setup instead of static and the HEI-8 ICM for ECU timing and tach, it should be golden. The best of the past with the best of today. What do you think?

    I just want to know the Arduino pinout so I can just not bother with an additional PCB. Choose appropriate 5 volt sensors that can plug directly into the Arduino, then use some logic level MOSFET with flyback diodes to drive the injectors and ignition coils (pretty sure a current limiting resistor between the gate and Arduino is required). Temp sensors might need an additional resistor to make a voltage divider, then just calibrate it in the software. GM style map sensor (0-5 volts also). HAL sensor with pull-up resistor (I think the GM 58x is 5 volt square wave that doesn't require a conditioning circuit. TPS, a potentiometer, so of course it can be 0-5 volts as well. Then just mount everything in a plastic box... And of course just make sure to not mess up the wiring so the protection circuits aren't needed.

    I don't work for or even know the prople at Caswell Plating, but as a (now retired) motorcycle (and automtive line) mechanic, I strong suggest you check them out. The "Kreem Alternative" they offer is also so much better, it is used MORE in manufacturing than as a "motorcycle" or "car restoratuon" product. It is used as potting for electronics, among several other applications in large manufacturing facilities, because, unlike other "designed and patented for a single use" (car or morotcycle specific) formulations, this product meets the more stringent standareds of manufacturing industries all over the globe as well.
    So, yeah, you CAN beef up the (28 awg) wiring on those smaller connectors by joining each of the little leads to a piece of stranded THHN with a good solder joint, then just pot it with the same (clear) stuff you can also coat tanks with, and it's CLEAR, not WHITE. One product, several uses, less overhead.
    I mention this first because - the connectors you discussed moving to (toward the end of this video) are - well - their huge, so, not really great for a clean looking build, and could even CAUSE problems in a lot of applicarions, because they're so bulky.
    So, you can pot electronics AND seal tanks with the same stuff, and it's bad-ass.
    Ahhhhh, but wait, there's more. The name of the outfit is Caswell PLATING - because that was their FIRST patent. A small plating "kit type" product for short-run products, proof of concept and/or prototyping stuff, AND for auto/motorcycle/antique/collector type stuff. They also have pantented anodizing products that I've not personally used, but have seen the results of others, and have recently seen a RUclips review about, again, with great results
    You've definately got the goods, and this video alone is a great contribution! I think this new-fangled "fuel injection" and "computer controlled engine" stuff may actually start to catch on. I'm not so sure about all this "turbo fan" stuff though. Does that actually even DO ANYTHING? {snicker}

    I know why you like allenkey/hex bolt/socket head bolts too? It's cause if they round out, you can always put the next size up and tap it in to crack the bolt or worse comes to worse you can use some vice grips and crack them to get them out. You've got more shots till you resort to malpractices lol

    I have a 1981 xv750se, and the ignition module is kaput. I have been looking in to converting it to electronic ignition, so doing fuel injection at the same time just makes sense. I'm also quite keen to give it a go, as according to the forums, efi is impossible to do on the viragos.
    Great idea on using the tachometer drive for the crank position sensor. I hadn't thought of that one. Won't work for my bike, but that's a really good idea.

    I've come into a ZL1000 Eliminator and I DETEST carburetors, thinking of doing the conversion, and also do coil-near-plug with Speeduino or similar. I am not a machinist though, so I am gonna try to limit the amount of machine work.

    Hey, I'm working on a DIY STM32 ECU to convert one of my old dirtbikes to FI and came across your vid during research. Looks like you made some great progress. Good idea on the smart ignition module. I had no idea they exist, and it saves a lot of complexity building a CDI circuit into the ECU. I'd love to pick your brain more about this project. It's so hard to find info on ECU building.
    BTW, your optical crank position sensor should work, but the infared LEDs they use have very short lifespans at high temp. This is what makes reluctance sensors more popular.

    I'm thinking of doing a cx500 v-twin efi. Why not just modify the existing carbs to be just throttle bodies? Put the injectors in a tube where they mount to the head?
    What I'm trying to figure out is what injectors I can use for a 500ci.

      For my turbo XS750 build, I'm making a custom tank with an in-tank fuel pump/regulator combo from some Harley that I found on ebay(it was the lowest profile assembly I could find). On my previous build (XJ750), I used an in-line pump and bypass style regulator (also from ebay). Both are switched from a relay triggered by the speeduino.

      I too, was concerned about electrical load with the fuel pump etc. To help mitigate this, I switched all of the lights to LEDs, I've put a few hundred miles on the bike since the conversion and haven't had a voltage drop problem yet.

      @@YiannisMiliaresis, according to the eBay post where I purchased the fuel pump, it came from a Harley Davidson XG750. I am not familiar with HD bikes at all, so I cannot confirm.

    nice, I followed a guys website from back like 2005 He converted his yamaha XJ/S1100 to fuel injection with megasquirt and GSXR750 throttle bodies, I always had intentions of doing it and turbocharging my bike. (Stan Hutchisons XJ1100 EFI project)

    Turbo mounting. Do believe reason for mounting turbos close to the cylinder head is it's more efficient. Hot gasses expand and create higher flow speed. Mounting at the back will loose you loads of power.

    Like the through hole black board with a the TE connector . I have arthritis so SMDs are beyond my physical capability . If you have any of these spare for sale that would be great . Running external MAP and Baro sensors incidentally on a Triumph Daytona 675R and yes apart from being a high Z injector very little info exists on these . Sadly I just found this as I have a few sets of TBs spare and would have been happy to trade one for a couple of the through hole boards .

    Know this vid is 3yrs old, but is their a way to my a speeduino board just supply additional fueling for my turbo build, and not be a standalone. I'm not sure how you'd make it intercept the injector signal , and modify it under boost only.

    I've got a crf250L it's fuel injection factory I won't to add a turbo was wondering if I can add on a 3 bar map sensor and mod the computer to see the boost and just add fuel under boost and run normal with not ?

    Nice video mate, busy with a similar project as well, er650 throttle bodies onto a kz440 with a microsquirt, only issue atm is my three wire IAC that the micro squirt doesn't accept, just a though I hate to see your grub screw ding the throttle bodies, I drop a captive ball bearing in there to protect the body, Please keep us updated on this beast!

    I had the 'same bike'- 1977 XS 750. My "maniacs in Canoga Park ,Ca. punched it out to 903cc -with liners. Tons of metal in that cylinder block! I want to do fuel injection on my 1963 'Mailster' 3 wheeler. A 22 h.p. Vanguard motor. so....Thanks!

    My 2002 triumph engine with only 1900 freshly out of the service is now knocking.
    Is it possible that the ECU programming cause the engine to start knocking ?
    Is it possible that the factory mapping could become corrupt or partially corrupt and cause engine knocking ?

    FWIW the reason optical sensors are not common on OEM systems is that it only takes a small amount of contamination to stop them working, magnetic sensors are much more robust. Having been here myself, throttle bodies and ECU are the relatively easy parts of the conversion, what are you going to do for the high pressure fuel pump? Cut the tank up and mount an OEM pump inside? Is the charging system up to the job of the additional load?

    How do you approach the fuel pump system?
    All I know and used (for cars) are Bosch external pumps, but they are very big and don't have high heat tolerance. Moreover, you have to use a return line to prevent vapour lock.

    1 carb triumph 650cc twin from 1967. 12 Volt pos ground system. is what I would like to convert. I have a Boyer bransden ignition box on it. It is a wasted spark system. Id like to convert it, without cutting the tank.

    Another cheaper/simpler solution to mount the fuel rail would be to drill out the throttle body mounting holes, all the way through, then put threaded rod into the fuel rail, and pass it through the new holes, then secure with a nut. No need for fancy turnbuckle screws or machining. Hand drill and maybe a dremel at most req'd.
