  • In this video Martin shows how he built his PRS style guitar kit from guitarkitworld.com
    He had a shorter version of this video with the pictures and only some playing on his own channel before we made this one. That video had a lot of comments asking for particular details about the build process and some specific pictures. He decided now to do an extended version where he explains these things for people who are interested in more details.
    The original video can now also be found on our channel: • PRS Style Guitar Kit -...
    We're not affiliated with guitarkitworld.com, however, we wouldn't mind getting one or two kits sponsored from them for projects on this channel. :)

    i love these kind of build videos, that looks really cool "Martin Burst" finish. I got a PRS copy by Stagg of all brands that plays like a dream, i got halfway through a refin job but was happy to find a top with lots of bits of figured alder that has such a charm,...so im happy to be the owner one of the "ugliest" PRS style guitars around:). *it basically looks like the PRS "Reclaimed Limited"; sourced from Peroba Rosa beams from old Brazilian cottages. Not exactly well received by the PRS fanboys, im sure some people share my appreciation tho:). The Custom 24 shape pairs well with all sorts of finishes. great video 👍

      Thanks a lot @deja voodoo! It was a lot of work, but it's also for my son, so he knows what's done to this guitar I've built for him, should I not be around anymore at some time. Hopefully this is not anytime soon. :)
      Do you have any pictures of that guitar! Sounds really cool.

    It's not thinner on the edges, it's that the sand paper is higher pressure at edges because it want to sag into the empty space. You have to be very careful with pressure of sandpaper on edges.

    • @LMGuitarCorner
      @LMGuitarCorner  5 месяцев назад

      True, it's a mixture of both. It also does not stay at the very edge this much. In general, I've learned to be more careful at the edges. How much what contributed doesn't really matter that much.

    4:50 I would love to see a video on how you did the black burst process, to achieve that smooth transition

    • @LMGuitarCorner
      @LMGuitarCorner  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks, I just recently made a video on how I make bursts. It's a purple burst and not a black burst, but the technique is the same. You go back and forth with the colors. You go further in with the black than you woild actually want it to be and then push it back out with the inside color. If you're not happy with the transition, you move again with black more towards the center and then push it back once more with the center color, or in my case here, colors. I used multiple green layered on top of each other. I just used the green I felt was the best to add when pushing it out. I think I used all of them at one point.

    Great video Martin! Not that it matters in any way at all because doing this kind of work is so fun and rewarding... how long did it take you in total to do all the work? I wish I had kept track of the time I put into the headstock repair I did... I don't know how many hours I put into that, but if I was working those hours, it would definitely be enough money to buy several guitars... or maybe one nice Martin or Taylor acoustic guitar! The other thing though, is the learning experiences were priceless... so I call it an even draw in the end and worth the effort! What do you think of my crazy idea to buty 3 kit guitars and make my own Hydra... but Van Halen style... including a Michael Anthony bass neck & body, Black & White Eruption neck & body & a 5150 Kramer style neck and body... with a mini keyboard installed where the Steve Vai Harp was... for some EVH synth riffs of course! Yes... I'm insane! Lol 😆 😎🎸🤘

      Thanks Laz,
      the total time spent on it is really hard to tell. From receiving the build to the point when it was finished it took 2 months, but most of the time was just waiting for the Tru-Oil to dry. It was about 10min of work every other day, maybe 15 when I was sanding it back again a little. Dyeing took probably a day with all the preparation and color testing. Another half day was sanding probably. The neck was glued in quickly, that was not an issue. All the hardware installation and wiring was probably another day with all the fine tuning and fret dressing. So all together maybe 40h of actual work?
      I like your idea, but I'm not sure if a kit guitar is actually the best starting point for what you're up to. You may be easier off making your own body as well instead of slapping multiple kits together.
      Cheers,
      Martin

      @@LMGuitarCorner I'm thinking kits because then the only thing I need to do is cut them at the point of connection... and glue together... necks, electronics, etc... what done... will be easier and quicker!

    • @LMGuitarCorner
      @LMGuitarCorner  2 года назад +1

      @@MusicTherapyLaz I just have my doubts about the stability with so many neck pockets close to each other together with the glue seam. If the grain of the wood is properly aligned it can get really sturdy, if not, I would expect issues sooner than later. You don't have this within your control with kits.

      @@LMGuitarCorner Really good point... hmm... it's a crazy idea any way you look at it though... kind of a Rob Scallon kind of thing almost... play it once then hang it on the wall for art and science sake .. unless someone else comes along that wants to try and play it! 😆🤪 😎🤘🎸

    sooo... I was looking at the PRS kits from GKW, and the bird inlays look way worse than on your guitar... did they change the look of them for copywright reasons? or do they still look correct, but in the picture they look bad (again, for copywright reasons). Thanks!

    • @LMGuitarCorner
      @LMGuitarCorner  Год назад +1

      Best is, if you ask them directly. I've ordered 2 custom kits from them a year later, when they had no bird inlays at all to choose from. They answered me that it was not a problem and they could do it. The birds on those necks look the same, if not even better. However, that was pre pandemic and a lot can happen in this time. So, as mentioned, best is to ask them. We don't have any affiliation with them, so I can't give you more information than that.
      Cheers,
      Martin
