A Quirky Vintage Guitar from Japan - Greco EG-135 Review
Просмотров 26321 день назад
After Martin gave his Greco EG-135 a refret, Lukas got curious about this guitar. The perfect opportunity to do a buddy review. These guitars have been produced in Japan in the late 60s. According to the previous owner, this one is a 68 model. The specs on it are really odd, also a reason why Martin bought it. Full hollow with extremely low output single coil pickups, bolt on neck, 24.75" scale...

Hi. Great video. Question: I have in my ‘52 reissue tele I have a broadcaster blender wiring installed. Is there any way to put a jumper wire somewhere so I don’t lose the high end of tone when rolling the volume down? I’m trying to this without having to use a treble bleed mod. Thanks
Thanks a lot. Losing highend from rolling down the tone shouldn't be a big issue with this wiring, as there is no tone control with a capacitor connected to it. The only thing I can think of is the capacity of the cables that are high and cause an issue. You could try the following thing, but I'm not sure if this helps a lot, and it will most likely also change the way the volume rolls off. Don't wire the wires that are going to the pin marked with an "X" in step 5 there. Instead, you also solder them to the middle pin of the same pot. Like this, you're removing resistance towards the output that's increased when rolling down the volume and only decrease the resistance towards the ground. That's something you could try, but no guarantee that it will give you the effect you like. Cheers, Martin
Great vid. Thanks. My system is 2 blonde and 2 black tonemasters, guitar into ABY. A goes to Line 6 M9 to black amps and B goes to Boss ME25 to blonde amps. There an B9 organ pedal in there too. Sounds huge ! 👍
Thanks! Wow that's a cool setup! Cheers, Lukas
This is great, thank you! Question- For a typical SSS stratocaster, would the instructions at 13:43 apply? Pickup 1 is bridge and pickup 2 is middle?
You're welcome! What do you mean by your question? If you could use that wiring with an SSS strat to have a position where you'd have the middle and bridge PU in series like a humbucker? Cheers, Martin
@@LMGuitarCorner Hi Martin- Yes, I would like to use position 2 on the strat to be bridge/middle in series like a humbucker.
@@MagnumOpus007 With the series wiring, you will have those two series whenever PU1 is connected to the output, however, it will completely remove PU2 out of the wiring on its own and make it "part of PU1". This means position 3 will be a dead position and position 1 and 2 will both be your "series" position. If you make the middle pickup your "PU1" and bridge your PU2 you would have your dead spot on position 1 and position 2 and 3 would both be your "series" position. You could change that wiring a little to have "PU2" on its own whenever it is active and your series wiring only when PU1 would be active on its own. This means if the bridge is PU1 and middle PU2 you would have position 3 and 2 have just the middle pickup and position 1 being your series position. You would have the bridge pickup shortcut "on top" of the middle in position 2 and 3 which is technically not completely clean and it might affect the sound a little, but I have this also in some coil split situations and couldn't find a noticeable difference. Cheers, Martin
Missing the loog/Fender 3 string strat on top 😂
I'm not owning one of those, sorry. But you're right, that might have been interesting. Cheers, Martin
I played Strandbergs almost exclusively starting January of 2023 till about mid year 2024. I loved the design of the body. Do to shoulder/neck issues I can't play anything with a strap holding all the weight on my neck, but I have to play in classical position to not experience pain. The Strandberg solved that, however the neck never worked for me. I think it is an awesome concept, and I didn't hate it. It was great for lead playing, however I'm a guitar teacher. When 90% of your lessons consist of working on open chords, and your a blues/rock guy who like to throw the thumb over the neck the Endur shape is too noticeable in my opinion. July of 2024 I bought my Ibanez Quest. It had two QC issues, side dot markers had shrunk and you can noticeably feel the bumps when you play, and the nut slots needed to be filled a lot. Otherwise this guitar solved the neck issue for me, but not the playing position issue. That was until I discovered using the bottom strap button instead of the top. Now the guitar sits in a more classical position more naturally. The input jack is still slightly annoying but not awful (not more noticeable than the Endur neck was). I still love Strandberg's quality, and philosophy. However, until they come out with a C shaped neck to fit one I can't justify the extra money. I even just ordered a NK Headless guitar custom to my spec from China. The shape is nearly identical, but the neck is an asymmetrical round shape. Which, while not as good for me as the Ibanez Quest, is the closest to perfect I've come. Great video guys, thanks for the content!
Hey there! Thank you for the kind words and for sharing your experiences with these three different headless guitars. Does the NK Headless also come with fanned frets like the Strandberg? Cheers, Lukas
@@LMGuitarCorner Hey Lukas! The frets on my NK (which is almost identical in looks to a Strandberg) is 25.5" to 25" the same as the Strandbergs. They have older iterations of the guitar that were 25.5" all the way across, but I don't believe they make those anymore (not unless requested at least). They have other models that are I believe longer, something like 26.5" to 25.5" but those models remove the zero fret. The guitar is good quality, I bought one used before custom ordering mine, and I was pleasantly surprised by both of them.
hello, could you give me the references of the material used for the construction of this attenuator? I would like to make one for my fender hotrod deville amp. thanks in advance.
Hey there, thanks for the comment. We made this video 2 years ago and I don't have a list of the components at hand. Please watch the video carefully and check the shop I've linked in the description. You should be able to find all parts there. Cheers, Lukas
@@LMGuitarCorner I think that in the link that you entered in the description there must surely be the references of these parts but this page cannot be found!
No it's just a link to the landing page. Cheers
Great choice for your #1 pick Martin, teaching and working with the kids is great. 👍
@Rifff3 Thanks a lot Rifff! It was a no-brainer. Merry Christmas! Cheers, Martin
Dude what year is that Tremonti PRS SE? It looks like it has like a satin finish or something, I don’t think that’s normal. Did you have work done to it or something?
It is indeed normal. Satin finish (including the back of the neck) and quilted maple veneer. It's a 2018 limited run. We have a separate video about it on the channel because I've upgraded it - but not the body/finish! Cheers, Lukas
@@LMGuitarCorner looks amazing. I wish it wasn’t limited because I would have been all over that. Gorgeous guitar.
Just my opinion: I briefly owned one and although it's a comfortable guitar to play, I found the tone to be lacking. Slightly tinny and lacks body and character. People often say that sapele is similar in tone to mahogany but it isn't.
Hey there. Fair criticism in my opinion. I bought it over the Taylor GS Mini, but compared to many other acoustic guitars it definitely sounds a bit thin/tinny. Cheers, Lukas
it has been a great year , thanks Martin 🤟🎸✌️
It really has been, thanks a lot Mark! Merry Christmas! Cheers, Martin
🤘 I remember reading in the scriptures that John Lennon had great fun with a fretless guitar. I don't recall if it was his, or something he found at the studio.
The things you can do with it are really cool. Essentially, you have the power of a wiggle stick without the need to operate one. You're not supposed to play full chords, but usually, you're not anyway, but then you can slide these triads around however you want. Give it a little vibrato, no problem. Dive bomb? Just slide it down. Lots of these things. I was really surprised how quickly I got used to it. I can totally recommend trying one if you ever get the chance to get your hands on one! Merry Christmas! Cheers, Martin
That is cool to hear your kids getting interested in guitars.
@martianmurray Thanks, yeah, that was the best part of the year. For my daughter, it's her 3rd year of playing the guitar, but the first one the music school allows her to play electric. Merry Christmas! Cheers, Martin

cool really awesome keep on going cheers
Thanks a lot, will do. 😉 Cheers, Martin
As any serious bass player will tell you, the beauty of fretless playing is that there's no need to worry about precise intonation, just slide in and around the note you want, then you're officially "close enough."
Yeah, that's what I've figured. Vibrato is your best friend, just like with a slide. The one thing that really forced a change in play was that you don't bend at all. It's all slides. Cheers, Martin
Do you not know what bluetooth is
Yes I do. Bluetooth is not relevant for this application, but the portable speaker I used for the demo is an audio player that only works with Bluetooth. Nevertheless, the aux in is what counts. Cheers
Thanks for posting a demo with no talking and it gets straight to the point. i learnt a lot about what this pedal can do from this alone
Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad the demo helped you. Cheers, Lukas
i got a fender stratocaster HSS but I keep on hitting the mid pickup and I wish I just got the meteora that doesn't have the mid pickup.
A Tele (Deluxe) would also work... Pretty much any guitar with just 2 pickups I guess 😁. Cheers, Lukas

So is that Strandburg the Essential Boden? Or the higher end model? I was thinking about getting the boden essential now but with a new pickup maybe a EMG 57 or something.
It's a Boden Standard, which was the lowest tier when I bought it. I think the Essential is one tier below, but I haven't played one unfortunately. Cheers!
@ hmm. Sorry for all the questions lol you are the only channel to respond! But was the standard model over $1000usd? Or, how much was it in your local currency? Cause the Essential is $1000 in the U.S which… a bit pricey if that’s the lowest tier I thought there was only 2 models not counting 7 string models
@ ah never mind the standard is around $1,700 here :(. Oh well. Normal Tele style Charvel Pro Mod it is! lol.
I bought it in June 2022 as a refurbished model... Can't remember what I paid for, but I think it was around 1500/1600 Euro. Cheers
Ugh I wish the Ibanez quest wasn’t so fuckin noisy. I was so sold and excited to get this guitar until I heard the single coils… they buzz louder than an intro level squire Stratocaster. Or, or… squeals louder than my gorl when it slips into the wrong hole NAHMSAYIN BOYS?? Hell yeah.
Hey there. I assume you have the HSS model? Why not go for the HH model, which also has some split/power tap sounds? Cheers, Lukas
@@LMGuitarCorner I didn’t get any of them but even the HH model (Q52) has a lot of buzz especially when you coil tap. I really wanted a headless for the ergonomics and how balanced they feel standing up no head sink at all and they feel so tiny with a full scale neck it’s crazy. But yeah I did play one at my local guitar center plugged into an effects/pre-amp modeler with a noise gate turned on and even then the buzz was just unbearable. Mostly when playing on the single coil voicing the pickups are just garbage. “Designed from the ground up for a headless guitar design” lmao, what does that even mean?? Ibanez built pickups that suck specifically for a headless that otherwise would be an amazing guitar design with the other stock pups Ibanez uses, like the Quantum’s in a lot of their cheaper RG models and S series. Those pickups aren’t half bad they should have just used those. The Q54’s are just not good pickups they sound pretty muddy on top of their noisiness.
@@LMGuitarCornerit really sucks. I love the Poplar Burl finishes they look so sexy. I mean, you could just do a pickup swap and they would be super rad but I would have to spend an extra $200 about for a set of Seymour Duncan’s or something.
I bought mine some time ago before they were a thing. It plays beautifully, perfect action. For the price point you can't find better quality. Now I own two Grote's. They're as nice if not better than my Ibanez and my Epiphone ES-335. Get yourself one or two before Grote jacks up their prices.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Cheers, Martin

The burn marks are there. It's just not as evident from that angle due to reflections in the glass and lighting. I should have also moved a little more to the left to show them better. Cheers, Martin
@ Thank you for your kind answer. Good job. The picture is so nice. thx cheers martin.
That 594 is awesome and I plan on getting one eventually too. That Revstar looks cool too. The acoustisonic I thought would be a nice practice tool but I got turned off by the price so at half off I think it’s good
Thanks a lot for the comment, Murray. You can't go wrong with a 594 - the only question is single cut or double cut ;-) Merry Christmas! Cheers
@ definitely double cut
Thanks Lucas, merry Christmas 😊
Merry Christmas, Keith!
Hey,Lukas great top 5 your playing is getting better,Merry Christmas to your family,Cheers!
Thank you very much! Merry Christmas to you and your family. Cheers
Where I'm sitting everything sounded great, PRS was a bit bright but still sounded good. Your playing was part of that good sound as well, Noice job. 👍Merry X-Mas to you and yours Gentlemen
Thanks a lot Rifff! I'm not 100% happy with the sound either, I don't think it does justice to the pickups / guitar. But it was ok for a short demo ;-) I'm thinking about doing a comparison with the 85/15 pickups in the PRS CE24... Merry Christmas to you and your family, Cheers!
Hey now... great Top 5... I love my Acoustisonic Strat... almost got one in the natural finish but the Sunburst one was a nicer feeling and set-up specimen by a local shop, JAMS Music! Their tech had some time during covid to messed around with it write a bit and I got a great deal on it during their anniversary sale a few years ago. Hmmm... now you have me wondering, what are my Top 5 for the year... definitely HOTH, my Kiesel headless Vader, and then the MXR Randy Rhoads RR Dist +... as for the rest... I must think about that!
Oh my... how could I forget the MIJ Jackson Rhoads V!!! Lol😮
Thank you my friend! That's a great list of guitar too. Merry Christmas and enjoy family time in Peru! Cheers, Lukas
You really do have a much more positive take on the Fender Acoustasonic than many reviewers had, glad that you were able to connect with an instrument that many players are pretty cold to. Everyone seems to like the Revstar series as well, they seem like a really playable instrument. It might turn some players off by the unusual look to it but it seems like a well executed instrument.
Thanks Rob! The Acoustasonic is for me an acoustic guitar that looks and feels more like an electric and has a lot of different tones. I'm really happy to have it in my collection and play it more than I expected. But the full retail price understandably puts a lot of people off. I'm curious to see what Martin has to say in his buddy review ;-) The Revstar is brilliant and I can highly recommend it to anyone. Cheers and a Merry Christmas to you and yours!
UNFORTUNATELY, THOMANN DOES NOT PLEK THE GUITARS THAT THEY SELL. I GOT REFUSED A "THOMANN PLEK SERVICE PREMIUM STS" ON A NEW "SQUIER CONTEMP JAGUAR HH LNSBM" FROM THOMANN PURCHASED IN THE SAME ORDER (N° 202446.20290). LEIDER WIRD THOMANN KEINEN "PLEK SERVICE" MACHEN FÜR DIE VON IHNEN VERKAUFTEN GITARREN AN. EIN "THOMANN PLEK SERVICE PREMIUM STS" FÜR EINE NEUE "SQUIER CONTEMP JAGUAR HH LNSBM" VON THOMANN, DIE ICH IN DERSELBEN BESTELLUNG BEZAHLT HABE (NR. 202446.20290), WURDE MIR ABGELEHNT BEI THOMANN.
That's strange. Back then, when we did the video, they still offered it. I would assume they had a couple of returns after doing the Plek job, which you're eligible to when buying online, and they deemed it too risky to offer it. Thanks for the update! Cheers, Martin
@@LMGuitarCorner Yes indeed it's very strange, especially when no restriction whatsoever is mentioned on the Thomann Plek Service webpage, and when you consider that Thomann already did a Plek Service on a new Ibanez bought online at Thomann last year (order 202208.40714). On top of that, there are LAWS about "refusal of sale" (product/service) which forbid a seller to refuse to sell something that he provides for sale and that he actually can provide. Thomann is heading towards sales issues behaving like they do, this is very unprofessional and unusual from their part, and this is the kind of trouble that big companies like Thomann should avoid to create. I mean, either they mention very restrictive restrictions on the webpage of their Plek Service, and then they can refuse the sale of that service accordingly to the restrictions they mention, or they have to proceed to the Service that they sell and that customers have ordered and paid for. These kinds of issues blow my mind, like "they don't want to earn money" and get into trouble with the law. If they finally do what they sold and I paid for, I'll post an update. Thank you for answering though!
That's interesting, I didn't know about that. I'm not too well versed with these laws, I only know about your right to return goods bought online for 14 days without having to give a reason. I wonder if they have some issues fine print somewhere. Thanks for keeping me updated on this. Really appreciate it, that's really interesting and valuable information! Cheers, Martin
@@LMGuitarCorner Yes! It practically means that they will perform or refuse to perform on a whim, regardless of any professional behavior or legislation. I worked 5 years as an engineer in Germany in the 1990s (BASF, Mercedes Benz), and I was used to the utmost highest standard of professionalism which I kept in my working ethics. But it seems that Germany has "gone down the tubes" as people say, and after going bankrupt throwing their finances away in useless foreign conflicts, they're now on the path of putting an end to their economy by refusing to work. There's no peculiar reason for them to refuse this service to anybody, and, if there are schedule issues, then they can negotiate to delay the completion of the service, in which case the customer has the possibility to decide to AGREE TO WAIT or cancel the service. The last possible option, which is the worst and which I truly wish isn't the case, is that the management of Thomann company and/or their politics have changed in such dramatic ways that they're not willing to stand for any professional business anymore (i.e they sell whatever they can sell to make some money and don't want to care anymore about any other subject matter of the business of selling musical instruments but the sales themselves), in which case customers may decide to look somewhere else for more affordable options for the same products and services. That would be a very sad sign of the decline of that company.
Hi Martin ! After battling with long Email exchanges Thomann finally accepted to proceed to the Plek Service they sell on the new guitar that I ordered. I have 49 guitars, and it's most probably the very last new guitar that I purchase, so, this kind of issue with Thomann will most probably never occur again to me. Nevertheless, from now on I'd highly recommend everybody to 1st contact Thomann before ordering any Plek Service online. I am going to wait until I receive the guitar in order to appreciate the instrument and the provided service, and I'm pretty sure it's going to be FANTASTIC like the previous Ibanez I had from Thomann and which received the exact same Plek Service. Then I'll keep you informed, and finally remove my comment. So, if you want to keep the conversation, please feel free to copy it and use it, but I wouldn't want to leave a comment which could possibly hurt a German company like Thomann. Europe will need ALL its working companies to survive what's coming at the international level, and what's coming is really really dark. Merry Xmas Martin. God bless you and you're family and friends! Philippe.
I got it all wired up but the Bass position has no sound, the other two positions work as they should. Any idea what I did wrong?
Hey there! Just to make sure, no sound at all? The Bass position is considerably quieter. But if the other 2 positions work fine and that one does absolutely nothing, then there are only 3 places to look at. One option is, that there is an issue with the switch itself in this position. If you have a Multimeter, you could measure this, easily: 1.) Put the switch into the "Bass" position. 2.) Turn the control plate around so you have the switch to your left and see the pins of it just like the control layout in step 7. 3.) Measure contact between the two pins furthest to the right on the "lower row". They should have contact. 4.) Measure the contact between the two outer pins in the "upper row". This should have contact as well. Of course you can have the control plate also facing the other direction, but then you'll have to mirror everything of course. Option number two is the capacitor-resistor pair seen in step 7. There are a couple of things that can cause an issue: 1.) Either the resistor or cap are defect. 2.) One of the components/a leg of one of them touches ground somewhere. 3.) Either the connection between the resistor and the capacitor, or one going to the pins is broken. For option number 3, have a look at step number 8. If the left leg of that capacitor shown in this step (the leg going to the pin on the switch) is touching any ground, it will also shortcut the circuit in that position only and not affect other positions. These are the only things I could think of. All the other wires and connections that affect this position too, are also in use when the switch is in another position. As these work as intended, it could only be one of the mentioned things. Cheers, Martin
Could you use this as something live?
In theory, you could, if you go into a larger PA, but I highly doubt you'd get happy with it. At the end of the day, it's a practice amp. Cheers, Martin
Perfect ❤. Thank you
You're welcome! Glad you liked it! Cheers, Martin
@ I’ve seen in my local music shop a luthier took a Stratocaster pickguard and in the bridge position he hid another single coil pickup and when you turn the volume pot to 10 it engages a humbucker using the single coil ridge and the hidden pickup
@chrishill264 Are you sure it was a series wiring and not a noise canceling parallel wiring like position 2 and 4 on a Strat? I wonder what kind of pot he used. I could see a modified double pot working for something like that. But then I'd also assume some kind of crackle when switching on 10. Cheers, Martin
thanks guys 🤟🎸✌️
Thanks a lot for watching Mark! Cheers, Martin
To my ears, It changed the sound but it wasn’t better. It went from hissing to ratty. I own one of these do is love to quiet mine down and open up the tone. I bought a cheap Behringer for $22.50 and it sounds way better, more bite and transparent compared to my muffled Boss.
It's considerably less noisy when you reduce the levers. Originally, it increased noise even then, which is not the case anymore. I actually noticed more of a difference on my amps at home than on the tonemaster of Lukas, but unfortunately, we've filmed the before on that amp where it wasn't as obvious and it wouldn't have been fair to change the test parameter. Cheers, Martin
@ anything to improve tone and reduce noise is a good thing especially if you can do it yourself
@tremdoctor007 100% agreed! Cheers, Martin
Good job getting it playable, sounds good, wow ,must of took some work doing those frets.😊
Thanks a lot Keith, yeah it was quite some work. Also, getting the fretboard level again and then sawing the fret slots deep enough were not a small task. But now it's a fine guitar. Cheers, Martin
DUDES!!! I can't wait to hang! You guys RAAAAWWWK! My last GEAR & DEMOS SHOW from the USA tonight this ROCKMAS... jump in if you can, I'll send a link!
Thanks Laz, probably too late for me. I might join the chat if I wake up in the night. Have a safe journey, my friend! Cheers, Martin
Recently picked up one of these. My first tube amp for guitar. I also use a Donner Noise Gate in line for overdriven tones (kills all the noise in my setup) and also noticed the noise (seems almost like a ringing) in my effects loop. Going to try a tube can and new tube and if that does solve the issue, it probably needs some wire management which would be next. Thanks for your video!
You're welcome! Thanks for leaving a comment. I hope you can fix the noise issue. Cheers, Lukas
I have a real big Problem...... For me roundabout 4 - 5 Times a year is new guitat Day. I am getting Problems with storage.....😂😂😂😂😂😂
Haha, I'm nowhere near that rate, but my wife also doesn't allow me any new guitars, not because of the money, but because of the space at home. So I still know that problem. Cheers, Martin
Got an american performer humbucker tele. Instant open fret buzz on top 3 strings. Action seemed low so was going to raise it. Before i touched the action i figured maybe a quarter turn on the truss rod. While im about to turn the truss rod i see the first fret is super high and has a gap between the bottom of the fret and the fingerboard. Look even closer and there is a large dent in the 1st fret. 1400$ usd guitar. Ridiculous
This is a absolutely brilliant demonstration of what can be done and learned a lot from it, thank you 😊 I am currently experimenting with triple humbucker with 3 tone and 3 volume pots all of which are 500k push pull. I have a varitone selector switch and artet driver also lol! Originally I was going to wire up much the same way as a Gibson Es5 switch master but now want to do so much more and get the most out of this experiment studio guitar. Now my question is, what would genius mind do with all that hardware and would it be possible to even wire? I am stuck 😂 Thanks again for all your videos 😊
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoy our videos! That sounds like a cool project you've got there. I also wonder what a genius mind would do with all that. 😀 Which version of the varitone do you have? The one, where it is essentially bypassed in one position, or the older version where it always alters the sound? Also, what kind of selector switch are you using? Cheers, Martin
Hello Martin, I am planning on using my Lucille varitone rotary switch bypassed in position 1. The Artec Quadra distortion driver switch is also bypassed in position 1. I was thinking about doing away with the 3way switch and instead connecting all 3 humbuckers up to independent toggle switches. I honestly feel this is beyond me but has become a challenge, am sure it can be done and would surely give a massive variation of tones. Keep up the good work guys 😊
Nice riview
Thank you! Cheers, Lukas
Thanks a lot Bro :) Nice video!
Thanks a lot! You're welcome! Cheers, Martin
