interior design encompasses a broader scope that includes both aesthetics and functionality. Interior designers not only consider the visual aspects but also the practicality and functionality of a space. This involves space planning, optimizing layouts for usability and flow, considering lighting and acoustics, selecting materials for durability and sustainability, and sometimes even designing custom furniture or fixtures. In essence, while interior decorating is about beautifying a space, interior design goes deeper into creating functional, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing environments that meet the needs and preferences of the occupants. Not all people can be an interior designer like you think. It’s not that easy. Coming from a student in interior design and architecture.

Hi Gemma, I like your style and I personally do have an advanced Diploma in Interior Design and Decoration - a 3 year course in Australia. and I am not sure if you or anyone else is aware of this but I certainty didn't before I did my studies. the job description of an Interior Designer and Interior Decorator are quite different. in short, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design.
There is so much that a lot of people may not think of if you aren't a qualified interior designer in your country. In terms of creating a space with a blank canvas (aka empty house) this includes designing from scratch a kitchen space, bathroom space, selecting all of the tiles, flooring, cabinetry etc for each space and when selecting these materials you check with your countries building codes (Residential or Commercial), to make sure they are to standard, a lot of the supplier websites will tell you what the materials are made with and if it's suitable for that space but it's good to double check.
Before going into the space I have to do research on the house location and area it is located in, I have to look at exhibiting floorplans and work along side architects and plumbing, electricity contractors if there needs to be any interior changes to make the space more functional etc so I can create a space best suited for the client and then doing a design/client brief where I sit with the client and I write down every little detail that they are telling me, colours, fabrics, styles they like, how they want their kitchen to function, getting an idea on their day-to-day living. Because for me, I can design it but I don't live in it so I need to make sure I am giving them exactly what their lifestyle needs are for them to get the best benefits of their space.
All of these things are just a small sneak peak into what a qualified Interior Designer is/does, whereas the actual decorating/styling side is the very last thing that I do in a project.
Of course there are self-taught Designers who call themselves Interior Designers, the only problem with this I see in the industry is it can create a lot of confusion for the general public because the self-taught way is not what a qualified interior designer actually does.
Please do not take this personally, I am not attacking you at all, I feel you had some great tips in there as I am about to venture into starting a Interior Design business soon (hopefully one day a proper design firm) and I will be doing even more studies and learning to gain better knowledge for my field that I will be working/designing in and I agree with what you said to not give your services out for free. Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful day/night wherever you are in the world :)

I am wanting to what I would've called before reading your comment 'interior design' but I guess 'interior decorating' for better use of term. If you truly are passionate about what you're doing/want to do you'll truly embrace learning something new everyday-- Again, thanks for that.

Hi Gemma, I’m currently working a junior designer role at an interior design company. Although I still have a long way to go I would love to own my own interior firm one day. One thing that I would like to know is do you stick to purely designing? Or do you also execute the fit out and technical drawings as well as procurement?
The business I currently work for has an employee for each role so I was wondering if that was the same for other interior design businesses. I’m also concerned that I might not be getting that experience on the technical side, is it an essential part of business or do you leave procurement up to the clients after you have put together a shopping list for them?

    Hey sugar!
Cute video, homegirl… I’m an interior designer from North Carolina you can Google me ( Shemar Carr) I graduated from UNCW bachelor’s in marketing management! Whoop whoop! Okay back to my statement, you lost me ( you said nobody takes “raw photos “) No you don’t take raw photo because, some of us like myself just needs a fresh shave.
So what I’m calculating is you’re not that good at your work. Because if you were good a raw photograph would prove reality to your photo.
If your telling these people the advice your giving “I wish them the best of luck. But you lost me when your basically telling people edit work.
If the space you designed is a beautiful layout… the layout and art should speak for itself. Not the contrast of the photo.
    Horrible advice.
Don’t edit work. The client deserves to the true.
example: renting a property, floors are brown wood…. You get there no wood! Nor brown. Peel and stick && there grey…. The wrong impression because you edited photos - now you lost a client!
I’m Shemar carr. From North Carolina. I could teach you a thing or two.!
