I think a big part of joy visiting Tibet is the road trip to Lhasa through inner cities of China, such as Chengdu and Urumuqi. You get to see a lot of breathtaking natural scenery. Also you get to adapt yourself to the altitude.

    Hi Poppy
Thank you for this very informative video. There are a few things you miss or got wrong. i want to share. By the way, we are international Tibet travel, also known as i-Tibet travel in short form. We are a locally Tibetan owned travel agency.
    1) The first thing was the Tibet permit situation.
If you are coming to Tibet in Train, it is not the same as flying to Lhasa.
Herein taking the train, you will only need a copy of your permit.
Hence all the travel agencies will send you a copy Or picture of your permit. You will have to print it out.
You can show this permit copy at the entrance to train and while taking the train ticket.
But if you are taking the train from Chongqing to Lhasa. It is the same as taking a flight to Lhasa. You need an original hard copy of the permit.
    2) A traveler might want to avoid the first week of October as it is a weak long national holiday here, and it is not a good idea to visit if you wish to cheaper and less crowded tour.
    3) The tent guest house is connected with the China grid for its electricity. So traveler doesn't need to worry much about charging their gadget.
    4) For Chinese group Visa. The Chinese embassy in Kathmandu will not issue the Visa to the individual applicant. So don't go there directly.
It should be applied via an authorized agency in Kathmandu.
Additional to it. We ( Travel agency) in Lhasa have sent a visa invitation from the Tibet tourism bureau in Lhasa to the embassy.
We will send a copy of that invitation of Visa to applying agent in Kathmandu.
We usually ask the client to use our partner in Kathmandu. If you know any we can send it to them too.
In short, they will not give you Visa unless you have a visa invitation from the Tibet tourism bureau and hired agent to apply it for you.
    5) Lastly, In case of both flight or overland journey from Nepal. You won't need Tibet permit in Hand at all. It waits for you at the border ( Both at the airport or the Land border) with your tour guide.
Upon arrival on the China side, your tour guide will help you check out.
Above are the few missing pieces of information, and we believe it could lead to confusion for many. Thank you once again for this very informative video. you can find comprehensive information about traveling to Tibet on our site itibettravel.com or write to us at info@itibettravel.com
    Thank you

And there's no restrictions for foreigners, the only issue is if you do not speak Mandarin or Tibetan, communication will be an issue as majority do not speak English.

For Tibet, I shall make this maze of Tibet applications and what not to do or do by leaving it everything to a local tour group in my country to liaise with the Tibetan one over there. Only for Tibet in China I will join a tour group to save myself all that logistical confusions. From Singapore, so Chinese visa not needed, but still a Tibet permit and all that attendant problems with it is enough for me to choose the easy way out.

It is possible to travel there without permits and guides and fixed itineraries. Biggest monasteries and two huge Buddhist Institutes of Larung Gar and Yarchen Gar area also there. Disclaimer: this is not a political comment, but rather a fact education comment to clarify what mainland China is.
"Mainland China" is in contrast to Taiwan because Taiwan is an island off the coast of mainland China. Tibet is part of mainland China. There is no such thing as "there is mainland China, there is Taiwan and there is Tibet". The reaons are as follows. 1, there are 56 ethnic groups in China among which 55 are minority ethnic groups and Tibetan is just one of the 55 officially recognized minority ethnic groups. 2, Tibetan people not only live inside the West Tibet Autonomous Region in mainland China but also in Yunnan Province, Sichuan (Szechuan) Province, Qinghai Province and South Tibet, which is disputed terrotory under India control, known as Arunachal Pradesh in India's administrative division.
P.S. you'll hear the term "hinterland China" when Hong Kong is being talked about because part of Hong Kong is on the mainland - HK is more than just the HK Island, there is Kowloon and there is New Terriorty which are on the mainland. That is why it's inaccurate to say "HK and mainland China" so instead the word "hinterland China" is used when referring to part of China outside of HK and Macau.

tibet is tibet because of meditation and enlightenment, and only holy places like caves of Guru Rinpoche or Milarepa tower are worthy to visit.

I'll remove Tibet from places I want to go to, far far to complicated and apparantly they don't like foreign tourists entering there country. I'm still debating if I even want to go to China anymore , it was about 90% we would go it's now dropped to about 50% .

Haha china has 56 Nations. In different provinces live different Nations speaking different languages and having different cultures. Due to the political issue Tibet can only be traveled in group as foreigners. But it is nothing different ‘cause I’m chinese citizen and i don’t think the things that u will experience will be different from what i had seen
