- In this video, I give a brief overview of the RBH Sound speaker upgrades I made to the Audioholics Smarthome Theater room. The system in this room is powered by a Storm Audio 24CH ISP and matching 16CH amp, along with fully active RBH Sound SVTRS/AX front speakers. The center channel is also active and placed behind a Severtson 150" AT screen. The speaker layout is 9.5.6 which 9 bed channels (2 wides ceiling mounted) and in-ceiling 4 height channels. I also recently added the RBH Sound 21-SF/R 21"sub for infrasonic single digit bass response which adds a new tactile and visceral dimension to both music and movies.

Thx for noticing. Rt60 is about 350msec across entire audio band. It's near perfect.

I’m surprised you don’t go with bookshelf speakers on brackets hanging from the ceiling instead of in ceiling speakers. No doubt they would provide even more directivity to the Atmos sound and keep up with the rest of your system better. In ceilings look better but I think better performance could be had from a more aimable solution.
I don't like that approach at all mostly bc of cosmetic but also bc it can cause acoustical problems too. Directed in-ceiling is a very good approach. The Perlisten in-ceiling speakers are likely the best solution for in-ceiling height speakers.

Do you have any thoughts on some of Erin’s reporting on the alarming performance anomalies of on-wall speakers, as well as in-walls with built in back boxes? Really wish there was more coverage of in walls and on walls in general. Thank you for the great video, Gene.
Baffle step can be compensated in the crossover or electronically w DSP for onwalls. In walls don't have that problem and actually have some advantages because of increased sensitivty of infinite baffle.

Those 8" ceiling speakers matched w ribbon tweeter are going to sound cool. Definitely going to require a back box enclosure or the entire home will be listening to the movie.
Hi Gene, been watching you for a while now, but first time sending you a message, great review on the RBH speakers, I am looking at these now, I live in Scotland, and I am looking at the 821-SW/R and centre, being I’m using a tv I cannot use the 831, you said they do a bigger centre speaker but I cannot find it on there site, can you tell me the model number of the centre speaker thanks, I was thinking about using the 821-SW/R as front L/R and the 821C-SW/R as the centre if I cannot find a larger centre, what kind of sound would I get out of these speakers?. Also is the on walls better than the in walls? Will use these with two SVS SB16 subwoofers just now thanks Oz
822 across the front would be awesome. In-wall with back boxes is the better option if you can do it. The larger version w 3 drivers is 831 model series.
Nice setup! Would be interesting if you could make a comparison review between stereo versus Atmos mixes of a couple of songs, with measurements. My experience (Apple Music lossless, Apple TV4K, AVR Yamaha A4A in a 4.1.2 setup, in YPAO Straight so stereo is in 2-chanel, and SVS 3000 micro for the bottom) is that the Atmos mixes sounds far better with the dynamic range on another level. Some suggestions of songs, remastered vs Atmos: Into the mystic - Van Morrison; Take on me - A-ha; I was made for lovin you - Kiss; Suicide Machine - Death. Beyond the spatial effects, especially the base is so much richer and heavier. Would be nice to hear your thoughts on this topic.

I have for you, does it make a difference in sound,if your surrounds and atmos speakers are not active like your LCR channels?
I don't think it's necessary to go to the added expense of Active for surround speakers. I'm hyper critical of the front soundstage and feel that's where most of your budget for speakers should go if you listen to a lot of music like I do.

Hello gene. The AMT tweeters that is in the rbh reference line are they airy sounding, like the Dali’s super tweeters?
The DALI's are a hybrid, the RBH is AMT only. I own both and the RBH is every bit as airy.

I'm sure those front towers sound amazing, but it looks like aesthetic considerations were thrown out the window when they were designed. They actually make JTR and RTJ tower speakers look beautiful.
No, they don't. Lol, I had both in my room, and the RBH are far nicer looking and better sounding too. The RBH have a nice finish and countered cabinet. The RTJ are meant to go behind a screen or baffle wall.
Are bi/dipole side surround speakers still effective, or are owners pulling those out and replacing them with ones like in your video?
I wouldn't use bipole speakers in an Atmos set up. They were great for 5.1/7.1 but my experiences yield a better separation of height/bed layers switching to monopoles.
Gene... You said they (surrounds) play down to 55hz and that's perfect. What do you cross them over at for bass management?

By any chance, would you know how the timber matching and sonic characteristics of rbh’s atmos speakers, they’re smaller MTM blend very well with the new Martin, Logan XT line ? Considering slimmer side and rear surrounds. Would this be ideal? Thank you
They sound completely different. I sell both. The on wall version of Martin Logan would be a closer match. You can also use the smallest of the tributes and use the optional on wall box for them . The RBH will play louder then the Martin Logan though

I prefer on ceiling speakers for dolby atmos or Dts-X, especially as it's easier to point the whole speaker at the listening area.

I am browsing for in-ceiling Top Atmos speakers for a non dedicated living room system (7.2.6) myself. Somehow, I think a 15° inclination will not cut it, at least not for Top Front or Top Rear. I do like the AMT though, got them in my Emotiva desktop speakers. At this moment the Tannoy PCI 7DC RB are top of my list. Proper inclination (+/- 40°) and coaxial design, the specs are good. Back cans are provided also. Thoughts?
@Gene, would love your thoughts on this if you have a second, I purchased some speakers today, and the guy refused to play my test CD`s (that i brought in) and said the only option was Tidal; running through Bluetooth (possibly connected to a streamer or DAC i`m not totally sure), point being, i was a bit annoyed.
am i over reacting or this this a fine way demo speakers rather then a physical CD. thanks heaps, james. (he was also a huge audioquest fan, and even said guys come into the store and call it snakeoil but defended their pricing etc haha! thought of your videos when he said it).
Hilarious that person pushes AQ cables for "high fidelity" and then streams via bluetooth. LOL Personally most of my music listening is via lossless streaming on Apple Music or Tidal but always with a wired connection and HDMI to the input of my processor. A dealer should never turn away a potential buyer by not playing the demo material you ask to play. How can the place not have a Blu-ray or CD player in the house?
@@Audioholics Thanks so much for providing the voice of sanity (as usual) Gene, its amazing inst it what some people try and pull. i`m an audio engineer and went in a little bit as the undercover clueless buyer, there were quite a few things i could have corrected him on but bit my tongue, i casually mentioned my qualifications as i was leaving.

That 8” has such a large surround that I feel they are stretching their size specs. It actually looks to be 5 1/2” come with a 1 1/2” surround. That feels like cheating to me. Additionally the tweeter support bracket blocks a good deal of sound. This is a common problem with speaker manufacturers fudging the numbers.
Nonsensical post as their 8in driver is much larger than a 5in cone and there are no issues with vertical coverage of the tweeter in any install I've heard these speakers.
Every speaker made has and should include the surround in the size even if it's large.
That’s definitely an 8” driver unless Genes head is tiny lol what are you talking about.
