1. A handful of leaves in the woodland,
A handful of leaves so bright;
And some were green and some golden,
And some were red and white.
2. I watched them fall in the woodland,
The leaves of the autumn time;
And thought of the joys that were passing,
And thought of the days of prime.
3. The golden leaves were the first ones,
And soon they fell to the ground;
And then came the red and the purple,
And then came the russet brown.
4. And last of all came the white leaves,
So delicate, fair, and thin;
And I watched them fall in the woodland,
And my heart grew sad within.
5. For I thought of the joys that were passing,
Of the hopes that had faded away;
And I thought of the days that were over,
The days of the bright summer day.
6. And I thought of the hopes that were withered,
And the joys that were bright and fair;
And I thought of the love that had perished,
And the hopes that were built on air.
7. And my heart grew sad in the woodland,
As I watched the leaves decay;
And I thought of the joys that had faded,
And the hopes that had passed away.
