probably the most informative and straight to the point video on detailing my pieces that ive watched tonight. im here from 1/35th scale figurine painting videos. thanks!
Thats alot! I have been painting without washes for about 3 years lol. Mainly because I was kind of self taught and just paited whatever way seemed to work. And it took me about 2-4 *hours* to get a model I'm really happy with! This will save me alot of time!
A neat trick ive learned through playing around with wash is a fading color look. Example Red paint/Black wash that is almost dry apply a light bit of red paint close to the wash and drag the wash a bit into the red paint to get a dark to light shading effect. This works well on larger surfaces and really makes a model look unique. It take practice but after you get better at it you can acheive shading effects ontop of the highlight looks that the wash gives you.
-3 Parts water (some people swear by distilled, but I found regular clean water works just as well). -3 parts Matte Medium (wich is a clear, non shine binding agents for acrylics) -1 part paint in any color you're going for. Mix well, and you're done! Hope that helps.
I recently found this guys videos.. his series on starting in the hobby is amazing.. and he has so few views its a crime , it really is.. i have nothing to do with this guy, i just think so much effort deserves more than the 15 views its had over the last few months.. here is the vid.. How to Get Started Painting Miniatures Part 1 - The Decision hope you guys check it out , this guy really deserves it...
I really appreciate your video. I am painting my first miniatures (Descent 2nd edition) and washing and highlighting are all new to me. Thanks for the help!
Excellent video, I am just starting WHF with Blood Island starter pack. I was a little worried about painting and was uncertain what washing was or what were the benefits of using it. You covered it all. Great work. Thanks!
thanks man, just planning on a warhammer 40k army (Space Wolves) so I watched around and searched for some videos on how to paint miniatures and found you here. Nice video, very good explanation I subscribed ^o^
Thanks so much for the high-production video! I really appreciate the succinct, efficient script and the post-work images and graphics. I was looking for a basic, all-encompassing video and I found it here!
For those asking about what color wash to use with any other color... I have found the Flesh tone wash to be the most versatile. It seems to compliment just about anything. Coincidentally, black wash has not.
I appreciate your efforts immensely and as a new painter - too much too fast can cause an intimidation factor that just has me packing the brushes and not enjoying the process. Thank you again. Also, I respect you professionalism. You were very kind to that douche, I delete and block one-uppers. Keep them coming, sorry I JUST found these great videos!
Thank you for this video, been around the hobby on and off since the earlt 90's but only just started to get into the painting ...this should give me a good kick start
I just received my copy of War of the Ring with Battles of the Third Age and after watching this I am definitely committing to painting all 300 models.
Don't look any further, this is a great video even for people who have painted for years! Remember, good painting is always back to basics, And shading is essential for any good paint project to look good. I tip my hat to you sir #TyphoonPaintingProducts #TyphoonPaintMixer #TyphoonPaintRacks #CitadelPaintRacks #VallejoPaintRacks #MiniaturePaintingProducts #MiniaturePaintBottleRacks #MiniaturePainting #Coolminiornot #CoolMinis
Hey thanks a lot, I was having problems with my Anrakyr lights, in the end I managed to get it working by washing the lights with a darker tone of blue, worked great!
Kurt: I prime with a paintable, grey primer (not spray). Then add the base coat colors. Afterwards, do your dry brushing/highlights. THEN do the wash. You can also (for even more depth) base coat, dry brush, wash, highlight and then wash again. Never do the wash first. Always do it last.
That was helpful. You gave good examples and I like the before and after photos, which really helped show the effects. Thumbs up! I am trying a new painting technique on some soldiers and I'll try this washing method as well to give an overall dirty tinge to the soldiers gear. I'm going to check out your other videos after this one.
Ever use gunmetal? it's my favorite wash because it adds a dirty oily burnt look to silver engines. You can also use it on denab stone to make dirty shiny bone looking effect.
So Im getting back into painting and I had a few questions.. Is white or black primer better for something like this (keep in mind I paint lotr models if that had any relevance), and also, do I paint the model normal before the wash? And if so, how many coats, 2? Ty for your time and ty for the video :)
I have just started painting 28mm (use to only paint 6mm & 15mm) so as you can see didnt really need to worry about washes. But my question is - Is there a wash for every colour??? or does say the one Blue wash can be used over any colour blue?? like say using sky blue paint as the base and then use the blue wash over this is the same as using another shade of blue base and then using the same blue wash - I use Vallejo paints by the way.
Amazing job, as always! The video was very informative, and showed many great examples. The amount of effort that you put into this is very obvious. The only thing that I would refrain from doing in the future is mentioning that "We will make a tutorial on that in another video," like at 5:05. For the interest of future viewers (When said other video is made) just mention the technique, and leave an opportunity for an annotation directly linking the other video (when it is made).
Quick question. I have an infinity gauntlet prop made from what I assume is floor mat foam and spray painted gold. Will the wash harm the paint if I apply it?
I Have already painted my models but am interested in using a wash to add additional shading, if I use a red wash will it ruin the current paint scheme?
@suicidehunter666 I was talking about making sure to use the wash entirely on the area you wish to wash. So don't only paint the wash over half a cloak for example. In one technique I was saying to cover the entire model with a brown or black wash, this was just a speed-painting technique though. Certainly you can use different washes on different areas, in fact this will likely yield a better result. Make sure one wash is 100% dry before moving on to the next one though! Good luck!
The robot in the start of the video is from the Board game Warhammer 40K and the rat (Skaven) is from the first created Warhammer serie (Warhammer Fantasy)
What is your advice on if you use a wash then dont like how it looks and want to remove it and use another one. I base coated, then drybrushed and used a reddish lighter wash and i it is to red. I tried the same thing but with a darker wash and it looks way better. Should i just repaint the whole thing?
I have BattleTech miniatures and recently got into painting them. I want to give the mini's a more 'metallic' look under any paint I choose, but my base coat is like a brownish, or greyish color and i want to apply a wash to make it look like I described. Any specific washes you'd recommend?
you mentioned using watered down inks as a makeshift wash, would there be any reasonable use for a true metallic wash like silver or gold, would it even be able to work as a wash even?
Jay, am going to paint some of my dust miniature with Catachan green. However, I've found that when I wash miniature with Nuln oil. It becomes too dark. and I lose some of that nice shade of military green. What would you do? am trying to go for a US green tank look. and thank you, for the video. It's given some great ideas
I have recently purchased the 5 fluo colours of Vallejo ( blue, orange, pink, green , yellow ) to paint 5 happy looking squads. How would you wash it without losing the brightness of the colours? Thanks,
Hi, I just start painting and I'm was wondering if I can use a wash with a primer, Necrotic Flesh, from Army Painter? This is my plan: Primer, paint, quick-shade (strong) and finally anti-shine spray. Can I add wash in these setup? I'm painting Zombicide figures, and want a way to tell the TCM ones from the regular set by adding a toxic look.
It is 6-7 years since then and now the paint has around 900 different genders. Mine is a mix of dolphin screams and the left testicle of Eva Braun. Never use paint thinner in closed rooms. ACK ACK ACK
Good quality video, very good info for beginners, now I have probably the nerdiest question of all, does anyone know the name of the music playing in the background?
All this time I'm curious about how the warhammer figure have this shading-kind of paint. Thanks to you and tutorial, it's clear now. By the way, have you ever paint the 1/144 scale figure? Wanna know how to paint it too.
This covers the real basics of painting miniatures in one quick vid. Very well done!
probably the most informative and straight to the point video on detailing my pieces that ive watched tonight. im here from 1/35th scale figurine painting videos. thanks!
Thank you for making this in under 20 minutes unlike the other videos. Much appreciated
Very useful, the comparisons were a nice touch as you can clearly see the benefits of each additional stage 👍
As a total beginner: Thanks, that was very insightful.

You were welll ahead of your time in 2011, great work. I can't believe I didn't see this for ten years
The explanation about the difference between wash and ink was so precious for me! Thank you!

One of the best "How to Paint" videos I have seen. SUPER disappointed to see the series was not continued.
This video is really all you need for starting the tabletop hobby.
Fantastic video. It was such a huge help to see the changes the washes provide and to see different examples of layering with the washes. Thank you!

Wow, this short film teaches far more than nowadays tutorials.
I am looking at getting into Warhammer and this tutorial really made me want to pursue it. Great tutorial. Thanks!
I would love to see a video showing uses/tips for different color washes (red, green, violet, grey, etc...) This was a great basics video btw.
Thanks for the video, the last part answered my only question about basecoating all the model then washing.
I rarely comment on videos but I couldn't resist. This tutorial is great.

Seven years and we still waiting lol :)

I miss those washes. They were great for adding a subtle tint to shadows.
Do you recommend adding water to thin washes?
Try this on power swords too. You would be amazed at the kind of effects that wash can give you on various surfaces.
Ever use gunmetal? it's my favorite wash because it adds a dirty oily burnt look to silver engines. You can also use it on denab stone to make dirty shiny bone looking effect.
Thanks, just getting back into warhammer and I always enjoyed the painting of the models so this was a really helpful vid :)
Really liked this video, sad that you don't have many more.
Amazing tutorial...thanks for share !!!
Great tutorial. One question, how do u treat an action figure straight out of package that doesn't need a base coat?
This is just an amazing video, thank you so much
1. Turn On Water
2. Get Soap
3. Wash
4. ?????
5. Profit
MarkOfTzeentch old meme now but I laughed. I miss a good classic

Rockford Wellington, III Did you let the paint dry first?
I was just at Black Knight last week for a day of playing Battletech!! Great store!
Very helpful, thank you, I tryed it painting an unltramarine, and I think that the results are ok
Thank you for this video. It gives good demonstrations.

I know its a stupid question but do you varnish the model before you wash it. New to the hobby and have a project in mind
Nice informative video! Which metalics do you use?
Great vid. Thanks for the help.
What's the best wash for simply overall shading and highlights?
Great tutorial, what base paint did you use for the armour on the skavens back?

For pre-colored miniatures, can you wash without priming or base coating?

You can tell this video is 2-3 years old just because I understand the GW paint names lol.
The good old days

Hello I'm thinking about adding a wash to my miniature but I used white as the base coat. What wash would work with that ?
Can a wash be applied directly onto the model without a base coat?
How to protect minis color? Some tips fot varnishing, for protectin oil or ink wash?

Can the black shade be used for most basic colors?
"Washes are very wet"
very good explanations, thanks! =)
What colour did you use for the silver/metal on Rat figure? Please
As beginner should I just stick to black and white for washes?
