Carving a 20 Year Old Wooden Spoon... Into a Necklace Pendant!

- I've noticed quite a few "how to carve a wooden spoon" videos out there, and I thought "why not carve a wooden spoon... into something else??" So, this is my spoon carving. With a twist. Quite literally!
I started out tracing around this 20 year old wooden spoon for sizing, then I sketched out a few different designs within that shape. I was going for an abstract design, with nothing in particular in mind. As it turns out, it kinda resembles an abstract leaf. To me at least.
This was a first for me, as I've never really carved a pendant before. I've done some pendant sculptures using poly clay before, but I've never done a carved wood pendant. But that's what this channel is all about.. doing new things! I hope you all enjoyed watching this, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask me in the comment section below!
That just looks awesome in general!
If I had to pick a side, I think the silver and brown side looks pretty neat. It looks like a piece of a cog fused with a piece of wood, and it feels like a symbol that no matter how far we advance, nature will always play a part in shaping us and our creations.
Thank you! "No matter how far we advance, nature will always play a part in shaping us and our creations" very well said! ❤
I like both, especially together on the same piece. But if I had to pick, gotta go with that classic wood stained side!
I definitely like the natural wood side. Especially with the finish you applied, makes its natural features and grain pop really well.
It's a very beautiful piece and a good video too!
Keep them coming!
Thank you for the kind words 😊 Many more to come!!
This piece is NOW AVAILABLE for sale! 😃 www.etsy.com/listing/1114773308/carved-wood-pendant-necklace-tribal?ref=shop_home_active_1&frs=1
It’s so pretty but definitely like the classic stained wood side best 😍
The natural side is my favorite, looks very Polynesian!
I could definitely see that!
I want that!

I really appreciate the kind words 🙂 I've always been a maker, but to create videos now and inspire others is just purely magical. Thanks for joining me on this journey!
😊very interesting project, I really like the richness of the wood colour but it's great to have the choice of colour to coordinate with other outfits. lovely result. Thanks for sharing 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💖

Inspiring! I never would've thought to carve wooden spoons! Thanks for sharing with us. Glad I clicked over from Bobby Duke's vid. 1 more new subscriber for ya and really looking forward to your next vids!!
Thank you so much! Yeah when Bobby asked about doing it I was thrilled 😊
You're welcome! If you don't already, you should check around in any of your local thrift stores or yard sales for items that you can overhaul and transform. I've found some great stuff for less than a couple of dollars that I was able to completely change into something different. A "trash to treasure" kind of situation.
@@raynalangdon8158 my favorite kind of treasure! I will most definitely be doing plenty of upcycling in future. The more I can save from land fills the better 🙂
BR prestigiando esse trabalho fantástico aqui ;)
I like both sides~
300th Sub! I like the half silver side, it's a got a nice space age twisted with a relic look.
(Bobby Duke sent me)
Unreal! 😂 Thanks so much man, already working on the next!
Like the wood side. Could have done a mix of natural and stained then spray lacquered the lot. Still looks good tho and like the quick and easy holes which add alot to to the overall look.
Awesome, looks great ✌
Very good and unique idea Looks incredible congratulations!
Thank you Mário!
I like both sides. Glad I clicked over from Bobby Duke, I can't wait for your next project :-)
I totally thought you were going to put the spoon back together with the mod. Great stuff man.
Haha nope, just totally repurposed it! Thanks man!
And the wife in a rage is probably "you messed up all the dishes."😅😅😅😅🤣
That's awesome man ! Keep on the great work and have fun with art and creativity! :)
Thanks so much! Art is my life :)
Awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!¡!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!¡!!!!!!!!!¡!!!!!!!.
I love the arts. i like the shining side (no wooden color side) . Make more videos . i need to hit like to them as well.
Haha thank you so much, that's awesome 😁 Plenty more videos to come!!
Ross i lobe your videos. i m a new RUclips guy too so its hard for me to choose what kind of video i should post but i m totally inspired by watching your videos . Please post more videos .
COOL!!🤙
Awesome bro 👌 love form INDIA ❤️
Well done! That's a really beautiful pendant, and by the way I liked the woden side a little bit more than the other side but it's nice to have two different beautiful sides each one of them is unique, also I really liked the stuff you put at the end it made the necklace extra gorgeous 👍
Thanks again!! I couldn't bring myself to cover the entire thing, I like seeing the grain as well. You're just running through ALL my videos, I love it!😊
@@RossTheRandom I'm glad you do (:
SHOOOOOW!!!! :)
Whoa! I totally dig the color palette you chose and I think having the option for authentic wood or the metallic reverse is great. There's duality in the design-- curves ending in points-- as well as in the face of each side.
What was the name of that tool.. machine..jigsaw-like uh thing? I'm not accustomed to the names of tools, but is it like a band saw??
Thank you!! The saw I used is the Rockwell bladerunner, which is like an upside-down jigsaw or less precise scroll saw
turned out beautifully man... well done... do you have any idea what kind of "wewd" it was... :-)
Thank you! I wish I did lol, I was wondering the same.. I'm not proficient enough to identify species just yet
LOL... same here... only one I know for sure is "Pine" :-)
Love this!
Thank you!!
It's a very good work...🙃
Thanks dude!
I think this video may be how I found your channel! Bobby Duke was also carving pendants out of wooden spoons and said he got the idea from you.
I actually just bought a Dremel kit myself (well, a cheap Chinese knockoff...does your handle get kinda hot when using the flex cord?) and I don't really know how to use it yet. Hoping to get lots of good tips from you two.
Haha, thanks Marc! That's awesome 😁 I don't actually (yet!) have a flex shaft, just using the Dremel here. I do really want to pick one up though, seems it'd be much easier to handle
Oh, it totally is. It's much thinner, so you can hold it like a pen.
Go on then, I'll subscribe, just cos you asked so nicely! Keep up the belting work, it looks great!
That's awesome! Thank you for joining my little growing army 😊
Your amazing I’m so going to follow your. Channel
That's awesome and you're amazing for joining my little army 😃
Anytime.
YOU SIR HAVE A VIVID IMAGINATION 👍👊💯
Oh yesterday I made soup with it and today you were it around your neck😂 nice nice again respect 👍👍🇧🇪
Thank you 😊
Bobbydukearts mentioned your Instagram id on his channel, so i checked you on RUclips, You got great talent dude.
All the best!
I will share your video everywhere.
Thanks so much man, that's awesome!
@@RossTheRandom 👏Anytime brother!
Hey there it’s me again Cris from Sydney Australia, as I said before love it love it love it.
Thank you again, Cris! 😊😊
Oh hell wow that is gorgeous.. im so glad that Bobby Duke shouted u out so I could find ur amazing art.. I make macrame necklaces and would love to have one of ur pendants and make a macrame design for it... do u sell them?
Thank you Mina! 😊 I do not currently sell them, but I hope to get a shop set up in the near future
Bobby Duke brought me here.
I'm a wood guy so wood side for me... but it's close 😉
Yeah initially I'd planned on doing the whole thing metallic.. to make it not even resemble wood. But then I just couldn't bring myself to cover the whole thing lol
Nooice!
This is so amazing. My son Austin aeon10121 sent me your video. Thank you for amazing step by step
Dont you hate it when your battery just dies in the middle of a project? I need to get a corded tool. Both sides have their own quality, nice to have the option to change the look of the pendant to soot the mood or outfit!
Lol! In the end, I think it's the Dremel that may have died. Thanks for watching 😀
My original plan was to completely cover it, but.. I just couldn't lol
Thanks to Bobby Duke arts that I subscribed you and watched you're videos
Thanks Emanuel! Many more videos to come 😀
Yay
The wood side of course, but which side is the wood side? if its totally made from wood? I guess its all in the way you look at it. Nice piece either way. 😜✌
Thanks Jack! 😁
His wife, have you pissed off with my bloody spoon again!
She did make me go and buy some more lol 🤣
the brown side
Really impressed with his skill and artistry but not a lot of actual carving.
Thank you Brian! This was one of my very first videos, so I was just trying to keep it simple 😉
bro, your work is cool, do you sell the sculptures or is it just a hobby? sorry english, i use the translator, i'm brazilian
Thank you Rafael!! Not yet, but maybe soon 😉
This is awesome! Do you have an Etsy?
Thanks Emily! Not yet, but I hope to soon 😊
hello im here from Mr.Bobby DuKe ArtS NiCE To mEeT U
Beautiful things you make.. What kind of cord do you use for the pendant? 🙂
Thank you so much! I prefer the minimalist look, so I just used some 3mm black waxed cotton cord 🙂
👍👍💯💯💯👏👏👏👏
Hi Ross 👋 new follower, fellow maker in the uk.
Giving you the same advice as Bobby, don't know if you know what I know, but let's give it a goooo 🤔
So, the scroll saw can have a spiral blade on it that allows you to make tight corners without the restraints that a flat blade gives you (having to back up and slowly edge the turn) and makes cutting intricate designs out a whole lot easier... The caveat being that they are a little weaker so you just have to take it easy with them.
They have them here in Blighty so I'm sure they'll have them in that there Amerikeeeee of yours ☺
I love this! It's like when people make pallets out of old coffee tables 🤣🤣🤣
Awesome work.

P.s...I love both sides! 😁
Pallets out of coffee tables, now there's a brilliant idea! 😂 Yes a scroll saw would be fantastic, I've a list of things I need lol... in time!
Fun fact: I'm originally from England, born in Banbury. Could move back in the near future, I've got a big family there. Last year's visit was harder than expected when it came time to leave

Great work,,, just DITCH the background music! Tool noise is the only music we need to hear . PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
