That's somehow a positive for him? Rose bet on the game for years, he bet on his own team while playing and managing, he bet through a mob-connected bookie, and he lied about it endlessly with arrogance and a total lack of remorse. He was in control of an entire team, not just one player affecting the outcome. He plays the victim in the most obnoxious way. Sure, there's hypocrisy and unequal justice in many aspects of the MLB decision-making. But Rose is not the poster boy for unfair rulings. He's an insufferable jerk, liar and disgrace to the sport.

If anything, the standards should be higher for someone viewed as a legend of the game. I have nothing but contempt for Rose the person, and I don't think we can be "objective" about his accomplishments when those accomplishments were undermined by his shameful gambling, endless lies and cheap victimhood act.

There's usually more to these stories than meets the eye. He made millions in the NBA and has a brother who signed a 180 million dollar contract so it probably wasn't financially motivated. There are bookies who target young players and manipulate them into a situation where they then have control over them. I wouldn't be shocked if some dangerous people were forcing him to do what he did because he owed them money or they found out some info on him that he didn't want revealed.

The argument about Pete Rose is ridiculous, filled with false or irrelevant issues about Rose's history and the supposed "exploitation" of Rose during his playing days, and an insulting attempt at defending the scum that is Pete Rose. If Smith was making a court case out of those comments, it would be laughed out of court. Rose bet on the game for years, he bet on his own team while playing and managing, he bet through a mob-connected bookie, and he lied about it endlessly with arrogance and a total lack of remorse. He plays the victim in the most obnoxious way. Sure, there's hypocrisy and unequal justice in many aspects of the MLB decision-making. But Rose is not the poster boy for unfair rulings.
Jontay Porter, to return the subject of this current story, deserves to be banned and has no one to blame but himself. Finally, let's hear SA Smith deal with the gross hypocrisy of ESPN, the NBA and other major entities for ranting about athletes gambling while those major entities of the sports world weave betting into virtually every element of their public activities. They rely on gambling into their advertising, their website, their TV productions, their commentary shows and everything else they do. So don't try to pretend to be superior and judge athletes while ignoring your own complicity in the gambling cancer.

To everyone in the comments AND Stephen A Smith himself, I hope you read this:
The fact is, Adam Silver brought this on himself.
He jumped into bed with gambling conpanies and now a player found doing the wrong thing is crucified.
Manipulation of player prop bets has been rampant in ncaa basketball for many years - being manipulated by players obviously, as well as coaches and refs.
Go ask any ncaa basketballer to speak off the record, and you'll hear the truth.
It's gotten so bad that several U.S states have banned player prop bets and there is a further push to expand the ban to more states.
So, this has been going on for a long time at lower levels and god knows how many others have done what Jontay did in nba but do it smarter.
Gambling, whether it is on sports or two cockroaches climbing up a wall is, for many people, a disease. We all know gambling took a stranglehold of even the GOAT MJ. It is truly insidious.
Before simply looking at black and white facts, the NBA should also investigate WHY and show a duty of care to an EMPLOYEE that is bombarded by gambling commericals on a daily basis.
Jontay is a victim of the NBA enabling this to happen. They opened the door...and a player walked through it.

As a degen, he's done it for entertainment which is exactly how gambling companies promote themselves, as "entertainment".
What should of happened is the league should have kept this completely confidential; investigated; provided counselling and support; and offered probation. If he violated again, then he's gone.

It doesn't matter whether Pete Rose helped or hurt ratings during his time...give the money back! Ridiculous to even mention
abstract, inconsequential things, smith know this. Just adds to his so-called "documentation". Thing about, you can never
figure out ALL the PIECES of what was or was not done! Even as a manage, you influence the game by your managerial
actions that could either win or lose the game, endanger players (an injured player should be pulled, yet you keep him in...was
this done because of betting, or would you have done it anyway...Absolutely No Way Of EVER Knowing), same as pulling out
a player and putting a low performer player! How doesn't can anyone EVER know the betting didn't influence the action?
But the worse of all, just like Jontay and many others, THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NO REASON PETE SHOULD BE BETTING,
SHARING INFORMATION, WHATEVER BECAUSE HE REALLY DOESN'T NEED THE MONEY! THIS IS ALL EGO!!!!,
Rose, Jontay could have GIVEN money directly to those that were to benefit from it and at his salary...never missed a penny!
So, it all ego! I'm the man, Life is about ME! I control....power corrupts, absolute power...we know, and point made again!

Here is where SAS is a shrill for the establishment. Jontay Porter is a scapegoat that lets Silver look like he has control. But he does not have control of this. Not at all. That speech by Silver was a joke. Obviously, the integrity of the game is NOT the most important thing in the game or else he never would have gotten in bed with gamblers. Wake up, SAS. Porter is a pawn in all of this. He means nothing. There is, however, a much, much bigger story here. Stephen A, let them just hand down this narratives and expect you to swallow them whole. Come on, bro. Wake the H up. Your moral outrage feeds the system and gives it cover.

I’m not a gambler by any means but I understand why people are drawn to it. For an actual NBA player (who makes the minimum) to participate in it doesn’t really surprise me. It’s big big money after all, and Jontay had the potential to make more than his salary.
