  • A wildlife pond really can bring a vast amount of extra wildlife into your growing space. from frogs, toads, newts and dragonfly's. Many love a juicy slug. With the wetter weather slugs and snails are decimating crops. Time to take the gloves off, I'm battling slugs with nature.

    We have huge ponds next door and behind us but I am still going to use beer traps and cinnamon around plants 🤞🤞. Oh lord it took me 3 years to get rid of creeping Jenny. Have a great week Helen, Ali 🌧️🌧️🌧️🇨🇦

      Yup creeping jenny is a giant 💩 🤣. But I'll see how I can cope with containing it. Beer traps are working for us. But the constant downpours just keep diluting it 🤣. I mean who enjoys light beer 😂. Have a good one Ali 👍

    Make sure you have a boarder around each bed that is kept dry & warm, perhaps woodchip or something similar. Slugs & snails love cold damp places and come out at night when it is colder, perhaps salt will stop them from crossing, otherwise inhumane beer traps. Or Nematode sprays . Good luck!

      😊 As you can see from all my other vids I use woodchip paths between all my beds. ☺️. I'm surrounded by unkept allotments, and they come in from all directions. I use beer, too. Like I showed in a previous video. Salts not a great idea for the soil life. With it being such a bad year for slugs even the RHS is having a bad time with them this year. But I shall persevere 😊👍

    Hey there, was seeking reassurance was doing ok with my wildlife pond at allotment. Thanks. Yes, it has been a major point to have added this. The entire site. Is home to newts slowworms lizards, I even have glow in the dark centipedes,! And my lonely male frog finally has a mate in my pond. So I am sure there’s a battle between the newts and the frogs, toads but at least I have given them a fair battle field :-) may creative force of new life begin!

    Will introduce insects, but slugs may creep into your greenhouse underground as they only come out at night.

      They get in there easily enough already 😂. It's just a bad year for them

    Great video, given me some idea how to make one. Shouldn't you have used rainwater though, chemicals in tap water. It's not clear on the video where your water is from.

    • @oddsocksgrowing
      @oddsocksgrowing  День назад +1

      It was filled with tap to check for leaks. Then emptied. Then filled up again with tap water. The chemicals in tap water dissipate quickly. Also because i didn't add any fish etc. it would be ok. By the time wildlife come in its safe. Its stays topped up with all the rain we had.

    Don't think I would have put a damp area (Pond) so close to where I'm growing. Predators for slugs will find them anyway , maybe?

    • @oddsocksgrowing
      @oddsocksgrowing  4 месяца назад

      Slugs and snails will happen and does happen with a pond or no pond there. Its a good area to have, its leveller than the rest of the plot. 👍
