Foerster seems to have a curious concept of melody to which I don't readily respond emotionally. Perhaps it's uninspiring, rather than uninspired, in either case, when the first movement motif returns in the finale, I found myself unmoved by it, and so by the entire work. The only other works of Foerster I've heard are his "Easter" Symphony and his "Cyrano" Suite, both of which I have LP's and enjoyed, so now I'm determined to get to know more of his music to gain a better overall assessment of it.
