How Much Does the VA Pay For Disabilities?

  • Understanding how the VA pays different disability levels is an important step towards developing your post-military plan. The Veterans Administration logic for how much a 10% rating is worth vs. a 40% rating doesn't make perfect sense at first glance.

It's essentially a no-brainer to try for the 100% if you are 70-90% as it pretty much insures you are unemployable. My biggest complaint with the VA reps was that they kept pushing me to go to college. I was 38 years old veteran with 16 years of service, traveled around the world, was responsible for millions of dollars of property, and lead 18-25 year olds; only to have a classroom full of 18-25 year olds tell me what's wrong with the world, people, governments, etc... because they read books or had a professor tell them so and any criticism otherwise proved my stupidity. I enjoyed learning just for learnings sake, but it just was not for me.

Chuck has a great video concerning disability status...eg VA vs SS. I recommend that you check that one out.

Johnny English, I feel the same way about college. I get really bent out of shape by professors (who are essentially front line workers) talking about how much they know about the "real world" when its clear from their stories that they never saw anything close to "real" and even that kicked their butts.

Of course there are many other non-VA benefits that kick in with a 100% VA rating, like state property tax exemption, that cause the desire to get to 100%. Love this one too, my friend.

That is an excellent point. Gotta think about that. In fact, I should probably do a video just on those other benefits.

@@the_bureaucratthe problem is they vary by state. I know Virginia and Oklahoma offer property tax exemption when you have a 100% VA Disability Rating, but not sure who else does. But, it’s not like you can’t work just because VA says you’re at 100%. A lot of other benefits here in Virginia at 100% too.

Not sure why they don't have anything that mimics BAH, 100% goes a long way if you reside in a low cost of living area. It sure doesn't mean much in a high cost of living area.

I'm sure that it has to do with the almighty dollar, but you make a good point. I've seen a lot of disabled vets move to places to make the disability payments go further, only to find that they couldn't find decent work there.

You like figuring out 'systems'?...CHALLENGE! - How about the KENO game in Maryland...or any numbers game...I'd be happy to try any theories you come up with!
My newest Ex-Wife is 100% and she explained to me that she gets 'extra' because she's "unemployable" (or something to that affect/effect[?]). She says if she gets a job she will never lose any income from the VA because of her disability...I dunno...I just wish her well. I actually have my foot in the door to submit more to receive more. I don't have a VSO...my ex is very good with reading and understanding policies and what/how needs to be submitted for the desired outcome. Thanks for all the info!

      Lots to unpack here:
#1 - I have spent years on lottery analysis. At one point I built a website and I do a bit of consulting (I even sold a book on Amazon for a while). Lottos are great learning grounds because they strip away all the BS. The most important thing about lottos is to play a game that can change your life but has relatively decent odds. KENO tends to be bad because the prizes are small. Powerball is bad because I don't need $750M to change my life and the odds are long. In most cases, the best games are state level progressive jackpots. Then the real trick is building a ticket buying strategy to offset costs.
#2 - When it comes to VA Disability, you can work...where you can't work is with a VA program for people who are "unemployable".
      Congrats on the new Ex-Wife.
