CarsandCameras I had a question about a kart I just about finished. I slapped a 420cc predator engine on a mini sprint cart I bought. I put a torque converter on it, and a 19t #40 sprocket on it. The torque converter has a 10 tooth sprocket. On the first ride, the chain makes a ton of noise, almost like it’s catching a tooth or something. It jumps a lot, and has a ton of chattering when you put on the gas. I can’t figure it out, have any ideas of what it could be? Chain too tight, loose?
You guys are my absolute heroes! When I was a young boy 13 years of age I didn't have a lot of money. I grew up on a farm the one thing that I did have was wheels 11 horse Kohler and I bought a centrifugal clutch. I found the old riding lawn mower and I built my own trike at the ripe age of 13. It had no brakes. Accelerator was one I stole off of a lawn mower. I would powerslide to make it stop. It would throw rooster tails 15 ft long. And it would definitely ride wheelies with me on it.thank you for reminding me of the creative spirit that I once had and still do. Keep up the good work guys.
I think it is painfully (and joyously) obvious that despite whatever massive re-engineering it requires that the Ducati engine needs to be installed on the rail. The rail is (through no fault of the guys) a pig. A beautiful and totally cool pig....but a pig nonetheless. A machine of it's caliber and superb style deserves POWER!
You have a lot of excellent points here Gerald. The rail is a near perfect match (power/size wise, in my opinion) for this engine. That being said, we'd have to hack the chassis to pieces to get it to work- a chain setup would be more ridiculous/dangerous in terms of jackshafts, and a differential setup would also be difficult considering the rider's legs already rest on the 1" axle. To sum it up, it would be better all around to build a new rail from scratch; applying what we've learned in this build to a new design. Rear engine, chromoly tubing, a differential, etc. That's probably the direction we're going if/when we get bored with this one. At the end of the day it may be slow, but we still have fun with it, and fun is incredibly important in what we do.
I think having fun should be a top priority as well. And if a Ducati swap would require basically redesigning the whole rail I can certainly understand your reluctance to do so. And...I have to admit to some curiosity as to weather or not you guys can eventually wring respectable performance out of the 670. Another scratch built rail for the Ducati would probably be best even though it will be a massive project. One I hope to see! So till then...be careful on the "Death Kart". Till pavement do you part!
CarsandCameras with that being the case, why not turbo or nitrous the 670? Or even cooler, slap on an aisin mini roots blower! They can be used on 500-1000cc motorcycles and have even been used on 1.6l vw flat 4s. Plus with it being a roots-type, it's too easy to do a simple draw through setup.
Back in the '60's took a Honda 90 placed it up front between my feet. On a regular go kart frame. Didn't have to do anything with the engine but to remove the shifter arm then turn it so it was straight up and down. This was to help keep the front wheels on the ground, helped a lot in turning. Chain went to a small jackshaft then from there to the rear axle. This was Hot Shaft sprocket bolted to the axle, drove both rear wheels. Best way to turn was to stomp on the power , get both spinning then jank it around. Donuts on gravel was a lot of fun. Great stuff Guys, Keep it up.
My guess is because they are sponsored by a company that sells the twin predator engines, Maybe the point of the drag cart was to see what they could do with THAT set up.
This is sooooo sickk!! But I must say... The inch of throw you were talking about is normal, It’s a motorcycle clutch so just think about the throw that you get with a hand lever, about an inch... Not comparable to a car because it’s made to be controlled by a handlever and not a foot pedal

To fix the clutch engagement issue, just move the master cylinder down, and if need, make the lever longer as well. That will help with the throw and instant grab.
No, they should adapt a transmission to use the 670cc first, then go on to mounting this.Otherwise, we wont get to see the full potential of the predator series.Keep in mind, they built the 670 to run so it really just needs a good transmission
your Ducati is super cool and actually spoke with a friend of mine who knows these and said they were never less than 80 hp out of the factory and that is a little conservative,so you have some very cool stuff going on. i sure agree a foot clutch and better working brakes are a must and it will easily crest a 100 mph without aero work on the body of the car, as usual awesome work and content gentlemen
