  • Meet our 900cc Ducati powered 70 horsepower shifter go kart! We built this motorcycle powered go kart for an episode for a show on the Velocity channel. It scares the daylights out of us, so we pushed it to the side when we finished filming the episode. This time, we're bringing it back- introducing you to the build, adding a foot clutch and relocating the brake, and going for a ride. This is one fast go kart- 70 horsepower, 900ccs, and 100+ MPH capable.
    Thanks for Watching!

    Back in the '60's took a Honda 90 placed it up front between my feet. On a regular go kart frame. Didn't have to do anything with the engine but to remove the shifter arm then turn it so it was straight up and down. This was to help keep the front wheels on the ground, helped a lot in turning. Chain went to a small jackshaft then from there to the rear axle. This was Hot Shaft sprocket bolted to the axle, drove both rear wheels. Best way to turn was to stomp on the power , get both spinning then jank it around. Donuts on gravel was a lot of fun.
    Great stuff Guys, Keep it up.

    Your Ducati kart is a gas, when I was racing go-karts back in the day I always dreamed of putting a Harley Davidson 1000cc Sportster engine in a kart, then what do know, the late great Mickey Thompson built one, I believe it was in 1960-61 and Hot Rod magazine did a story on it, I still have that magazine!

It had no brakes. Accelerator was one I stole off of a lawn mower. I would powerslide to make it stop. It would throw rooster tails 15 ft long. CarsandCameras I had a question about a kart I just about finished. I slapped a 420cc predator engine on a mini sprint cart I bought. I put a torque converter on it, and a 19t #40 sprocket on it. The torque converter has a 10 tooth sprocket. On the first ride, the chain makes a ton of noise, almost like it’s catching a tooth or something. It jumps a lot, and has a ton of chattering when you put on the gas. I can’t figure it out, have any ideas of what it could be? Chain too tight, loose?

    I think it is painfully (and joyously) obvious that despite whatever massive re-engineering it requires that the Ducati engine needs to be installed on the rail. The rail is (through no fault of the guys) a pig. A beautiful and totally cool pig....but a pig nonetheless. A machine of it's caliber and superb style deserves POWER!

    • @JudsonGraham
      @JudsonGraham 6 лет назад +7

      Gerald Wallace I agree. The dragster was built to handle this kind of power.

    • @CarsandCameras
      @CarsandCameras  6 лет назад +71

      You have a lot of excellent points here Gerald. The rail is a near perfect match (power/size wise, in my opinion) for this engine. That being said, we'd have to hack the chassis to pieces to get it to work- a chain setup would be more ridiculous/dangerous in terms of jackshafts, and a differential setup would also be difficult considering the rider's legs already rest on the 1" axle. To sum it up, it would be better all around to build a new rail from scratch; applying what we've learned in this build to a new design. Rear engine, chromoly tubing, a differential, etc. That's probably the direction we're going if/when we get bored with this one. At the end of the day it may be slow, but we still have fun with it, and fun is incredibly important in what we do.

    • @rantsandreviews
      @rantsandreviews 6 лет назад +12

      I think having fun should be a top priority as well. And if a Ducati swap would require basically redesigning the whole rail I can certainly understand your reluctance to do so. And...I have to admit to some curiosity as to weather or not you guys can eventually wring respectable performance out of the 670.
      Another scratch built rail for the Ducati would probably be best even though it will be a massive project. One I hope to see!
      So till then...be careful on the "Death Kart". Till pavement do you part!

    • @misterdeedeedee
      @misterdeedeedee 6 лет назад +4

      CarsandCameras with that being the case, why not turbo or nitrous the 670? Or even cooler, slap on an aisin mini roots blower! They can be used on 500-1000cc motorcycles and have even been used on 1.6l vw flat 4s. Plus with it being a roots-type, it's too easy to do a simple draw through setup.

    Only 70 hp? I have seen a guy that got 70 hp with a twin 100cc cylinder. And my friends have like 40-50 hp on their 125cc dirt bikes. This is a 900cc… anyway, great build. Must be fun driving a beast like that:)

    Insane! But right up my alley.
    Suggest mounting front brakes if you consider staying around for awhile. Maybe a better roll cage. And if the clutch is too tempermental? Add some length to the pedal.
    Just sayin...
    Have fun

    Maybe try mod a street bike steering dampener to fit it so you have more control

    • @foureye7058
      @foureye7058 6 лет назад

      That's what I was going to say, even the street carts I've worked on (only 20-25ish hp) get a good pair of return springs on the steering.
      It makes such a difference for safety just knowing you aren't going to slip into full lock and crumple against a wall/tree.

    Absolutely awesome build guys,, loving the tyre selection, I've built quite a few carts now, personally I go for the big 2 strokes, whoever, that 4 stroke lump is pulling well, I've always put my pedal configuration as you would find in a car 🚗, move your clutch to the nearside much easier when your shifting.. All cred guys once again good fab Wrk..

    Hey guys, I love your channel and your projects. My question for y'all is, how do you keep from getting burned with the engine being so close to your side? I wish I knew how to build these things! Y'all are truly inspiring!

    • @timtamcs9110
      @timtamcs9110 Год назад

      I'm about to attempt to make the same project, but in go kart racing they have arm sleeves over their suits to keep them from getting burnt, but with an engine like that the biggest concern is the exhaust which are both not really that easy to touch accidentally.

      It a great idea. Did a 500cc on my rider. But cutting the lawn is umm... Useless at 20-30mph. Lol. I regeared and can hit nearly 70 if I open it up... But it's practically stock with big motor... So it's got mad death wobbly.
