Indirectly convincing an academic to sit down and watch a straight to vhs Barbie movie has to be a career highlight.
He just immediately emailed me back like I AM GOING TO WATCH THE BARBIE MOVIE YOU SPEAK OF. He knew what he had to do!
I cited some of Zipes’ writing on fairy tales in my MFA thesis, when laying out the overlapping categories of “folk tale,” “fairy tale,” and “myth.” This is a context in which I never expected to hear his name!

im only 15 minutes in and... oh my god? this is BY FAR, one of the best analyses ive ever seen on youtube. barbie in the nutcracker was so detrimental to my childhood and current love for ballet, tchaikovsky, literature and quite literally most of the arts. ive been on this train of constant curiosity about how others feel about my most favorite movie as a child, and this truly has sparked the same feeling i felt watching it for the very first time.
and also this was another reminder that the nutcracker/eric's voice actor, kirby morrow, is no longer with us 💔

Something interesting about this movie is that the romantic leads were played by the same voice actors as the english dub voices of Sango and Miroku from Inuyasha. Kind of a fun little coincidence for fans of that couple to appreciate

So this movie was one of my childhood fixations & apparently quite a lot of it is still seared into my brain meat
For those wondering where the idea of a multi headed rat king comes from. When large populations of rodents are forced into a confined space, like a wall cavity, their tails can get tangled resulting in a single writhing mass. In Europe these were quickly seen as a bad omens as they were often followed by plauges, though linking them to rat overpopulation took a while.
I saw a Dracula ballet and there was a lotta gay subtext. It was very sensual! and the male characters danced together! Sensually!!

I'm glad I found your channel, it's so good. This video really scratches that old movie rundown itch that no channel has really managed to scratch for some time. I find that every time I go back to videos by Spoony or TNC or stuff I like that I find that they're just... really dumb? So it's nice to find a channel that's smart, funny, and talks about Barbie. I don't know why it hasn't gained more traction, but I really hope it takes off.
(quick anecdote: I used to be really prejudiced against Barbie movies, naturally, but when I saw Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus when I was 20 years old and going to film school I found that the screenplay was surprisingly good)

My sister and I watched this movie on vhs over and over and over as kids. Safe to say it is deeply embedded into both our psyche. Honestly, a very formative experience. We were discussing it recently, and found out that we both subconsciouly assumed that Major Mint and Captain Candy were dating. In love. They just were, simple fact. Before either of us even knew gay people existed (our parents were slow on the uptake). This probably exposes a lot about the romantic relationships we were seeing around us but shhh let our unknowingly fruity child selves be. We had dreams then

I was pleasantly surprised by the Barbie movies when my daughter started watching them when she was little. I expected cheap trash, but ended up really appreciating the filmmakers’ clear desire to show dance and whimsy to the audience. A nice change from “action” scenes and melodrama!
