Lucky me I have a built in natural delay. Whenever I get a blow up I always have a second where I'm like "Did that actually work?" LOL I can't buy a bite with a walking bait but I can make them walk heck I can make em dance even.
@Flukemaster Wanted to come back and say I got to fish a tournament on a power plant lake in December. Caught 6 fish all on a walking bait, finished somewhere between 4-7th place out of 60 something people. I now have confidence in walking baits.
Just found this guy and I love it he goes in depth. U know how many videos I commented on how to old a rod to do the technique and this guys nailed it without me asking love this
Gene I'm so glad you are back.i have been watching your videos for years and I've been waiting for you to drop videos. Thank you for all you do ,me and my son always stop and watch your videos when we have a question on fishing a certain Bait or anything bass fishing related.keep dropping videos especially the tournament videos.
Gene, you are one of the only people to show how to walk properly. ive only seen one other person explain it right online and that was JT Kenney....and the drum thing was dead on. When teaching someone new to walk a bait, the most important aspect is when you twitch the rod or pop the rod, you dont stop the rod. You gotta twitch the rod and return the rod to the starting point. What you basically gotta do is throw the line back at the lure. so you move the rod like down,up down, up or back, forth back, forth. If you do not return the rod back every twitch, it will not walk. same with walking a frog or anything, but a spook is better to learn to walk.
Had HUGE success with it at strom thurmond lake for schooling stripers using these techniques except i used a spinning reel but thats just cause i freaking hate bait casters lol. I've also had success with it on a rainy day when fishing were exploding on the surface. Glad to hear your out there fishing if its been a bad year, in the last month and a half, my wifes Grandma passed, found out her mom had colon cancer (currently recovering from surgery) and last week found out my sisters having surgery to do a full test for Lymphoma only the good Lord and fishing have been my saving grace. I've always found your videos to be super awesome and helpful in more ways that just fishing brother, tight lines and God bless.
Man, I’ve only had to resort to an open face a couple times fishing a walker, and it’s brutal. Just doesn’t pick up line at the right pace for me, and the reel's just not as comfortable as a bc that you can palm. Good on you for getting that to work. I will take a bc over it any day for this technique.
So timely… I was out a lot further north this weekend and saw a spook in my tackle box that my grandfather had. Tied it on and tried it for the first time but wasn’t sure I was doing it right 😆. Sounds like a different rod will help, but happy to hear I’m on the right track. Be well!
It was good to see the technique in use. Thank you sharing your knowledge and experience with a new-to-fishing person like myself. I hope your personal stuff works out. Be well and God bless.
Caught 3 in 5 minutes before dark yesterday on the team ark 115 blower thats very similar to that 13 fishing one and that dual pitch is the one I learned to walk a spook with ❤ love the noise on it love the video glad to see you back
@@marshallreede5577 I actually have had far more success outside of the state of Indiana than I have within it, so I may not be the best person to ask. I've heard good things about the lake in North Webster but haven't tried it myself. Usually I fish lake Wawasee or lake Syracuse but have never caught a bass bigger than 2 lbs there
@@CT393 thanks man. I totally agree. Hard fishing out here in Indiana, I'm from Wisconsin originally, and Indiana is a HUGE difference in the fishing world. Good luck and tight lines man.
Bigger diameter line has more resistance to avoid backlashes is what I believe you meant haha. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and great video. I just want to know how you are reading my mind haha. I've been thinking about adding a spook to my arsenal and of course, you are on top of it with an instructional video. Thanks so much for what you do for the community!
I hope you're doing okay, I know what its like to go thru some shit. Your videos are more then inspirational..... they;re helping me though some tough times, man. If you're ever around ATL and need someone to talk to, LMK. I can also show you all the best spots to NOT catch fish....
Been following your channel a lot and wanted to say great job on these how to's and other content. I know you mentioned some personal issues, I hope you find a happy place and continue your passion. Cheers!
Two of my favorite walking baits are the dual pitch and the navigator even tho both are pretty close to each other I do find that they will hit one over the other but man both baits walks effortlessly
Great video and great teacher!!!!! What would you recommend for a spinning rod setup? As I get older it gets harder to use the baitcaster setup to walk the dog?
Nope. RUclips has to fix a few things before I can go back to doing my lives. In the past they have had a negative affect on the channel algorithms and really hurt my channel. They said that they are working on a fix.
I’m new to spook fishing so is braid ok? I have a 7 ft medium heavy fast action rod paired with a 7:4:1 reel spooled with 40 pound braid. I also have a 6 1/2 ft medium fast action rod with a 6:3:1 reel with 15 lb flouro. Obviously the flouro isn’t the best choice but I may put some 12-15 pound mono on it if would work well with topwater baits like poppers and super spook jr.

I think of a lure as a puppet. If I’m using a top water and fish hits it and let’s go, I’m gonna make it run away like a real critter would. Triggering the chase instinct in the fish.
Quick question Gene..I've been getting line twists on my next cast after walking the spook. Using a medium spinning rod and more of a side twitch due to being in a kayak also and not wanting to hit the water with rod tip. Is it because that I'm reeling in slack line? Do you think I should put a swivel with a leader? I'm at a loss on how to correct. I also use a loop knot and notice that you do not. I have 1 baitcasting rod but have 30lb braid. Will using that help reduce line twists due to the way its spooled? Sorry for the ramble and thanks in advance! Would be a miracle if I ever got to fish with you and pick your brain! Much appreciated from Lake Murray SC!
I throw a 3/4 oz heddon spook with a baitcaster. Curado spooled with 30lb braid but I always use 12lb mono leader. Not sure about line twist though....are you positive it's happening for you only when you throw the spook and not for any other lures?
@@billyjin2062 Thanks for the tip. And yes on with that one lure, after a cast or 2 then the next cast I do the line knots up when coming off of the reel.
Boy do I love a walking bait. I’ve had more success with a whopper plopper this past summer. Nothing's better than a walker when they’re busting, though.
Glad to see you back at it Gene. I know what it’s like to have seasons in my life where I get distracted but I always have to remember God is in control. Your knowledgeable and especially your personality were sorely missed.
well back in my 20`s in the 90`s i was fishing a pond with a spook but i was using spinning gear with the old spider wire fusion when it first came out or close to that. well i played around with it (trying to copy Bill Dance from t.v.) for a few minutes and actually got the darn thing to start walking. as soon as i did( doing pop, pop, pop, pause) as soon as i stopped the bait i saw a silver-ish shimmer come out of the plant growth at the bottom ( water was lightly stained but mostly clear). that thing shot up so fast and inhaled that bait so quick and i got so excited i set the hook and caught it. it was about 3lb 6oz i wanna say. anyways i have tried and tried to repeat that again . and i cant make it work no matter how hard i try. would you sir or anyone else have any tips or anything that may help me?. now days they don`t make spider wire fusion anymore and i would use 20 to 40 pound test in fusion back then. now i use ( kast king braid it works for me) and i use 20 to 40 pound test braid( but mostly 20 l.b.) with 14 to 17 mono (2 to 3 foot leader ) tied with a blood knot. also i have tried many times to use a bait casting reel and i just cant seem to get the hang of it. so i just stay with spinning, anyways love the videos keep them coming
What kind of surface conditions are better for a spook vs a whopper popper vs a traditional popper....flat and calm vs slight wind and ripples...or does it not matter ? Thanks !

Yozuri white/clear walking baits are winners.......nuff said
Comforting to see I'm not the only one who holds the baitcast rod that way, or use blue masking tape on the rod. Great video!

I have heard that you should fish the spook and poppers on a loop knot? Any truth to that
I've never seen a reason for it. If I need more action from one I just add a split ring.
I’ve seen little to no difference in action, and I trust my other knots to hold better.
